Chapter 5: The Bag-Buying Dispute

Ever since they had been classmates, Karen had looked down on Lawrence more than anyone else. In her eyes, he had no power, no influence, and no family. An orphan like him was beneath even a stray dog.

"It's me. Didn’t expect to see you here," Lawrence said with a faint smile, unaware of her subtle change of expression.

Karen didn’t even glance at him. Instead, she turned to Mary Brown and sneered, "Mary, your store is so generous—letting a beggar stroll in and loiter. But won’t his stench drive away real customers?"

She pinched her nose with exaggerated disgust.

Mary, a Dior salesperson with years of experience, wasn’t foolish. She immediately looked at Lawrence and snapped, "Sir, if you’re not here to make a purchase, please leave immediately. Don’t disturb our guests."

Lawrence’s expression darkened. So now I need permission to browse?

"This is the first time I’ve seen a shop drive people out," he replied coldly. "Is this your so-called customer service? Do you mean to tell me I’m not a customer just because you assume I won’t buy?"

Mary was about to retort when a younger salesperson stepped forward. "Mary, please greet the other guests. I’ll handle this one."

Lawrence turned to her. She wore her dark hair in a high ponytail, her slender brows arched above expressive eyes. A delicate nose led down to a small pink mouth, where two faintly visible canine teeth peeked out when she spoke. Her slightly rounded cheeks made her look irresistibly pinchable.

Her presence softened his irritation. With a face that cute, it was hard to stay angry.

Mary gave the younger girl a disdainful look but waved dismissively. "Fine, Hailey, you take him. Just don’t let him wander around aimlessly."

Grateful for the chance, Hailey turned to Lawrence, bowed slightly, and stammered, "H-hello, sir… h-how can I help you today?"

Her nervousness betrayed her inexperience, but the politeness in her tone warmed Lawrence’s heart.

"It’s my teacher’s birthday today. I’d like to buy her a bag," he said calmly.

"Understood. Please come with me," Hailey replied, relieved.

This was her first customer, and she treated him with professionalism rather than scorn. She didn’t care about his plain clothes; she only cared about serving him well.

Lawrence nodded and followed.

Meanwhile, Mary turned back to Karen and Dylan with a flattering smile. "Mr. Dylan, Miss Karen, you’re people of status. There’s no need to waste words on the likes of him. It would only lower your class. Allow me to show you our latest arrivals—I guarantee Miss Karen will find something exquisite."

Karen was somewhat mollified but still unwilling to let Lawrence slip away unscathed. With pride dripping from her voice, she added, "Then make sure that newbie doesn’t waste her time on Lawrence. He can’t afford anything, no matter what she says and wouldn't earn any commission f*e from him."

"Yes, Miss Karen, absolutely. I’ll tell her in a moment. Please, follow me." Mary bowed respectfully and led the pair away.

On the other side of the boutique, Lawrence was quietly impressed by Hailey’s knowledge. Each luxury bag she introduced cost upwards of ten thousand yuan. Before his inheritance, he would have run in terror from such prices.

Sensing his hesitation, Hailey reassured him softly, "Sir, it’s all right if you don’t buy. No pressure."

Lawrence almost laughed. She had misunderstood, but the fact she didn’t push him made him like her more. Few salespeople could remain unbiased when faced with a plainly dressed man in a Dior shop.

Just then, Karen’s shrill voice pierced the air. "Honey, this bag is gorgeous! I want it. Buy it for me!"

Lawrence followed the sound. Behind a transparent display case gleamed a silver handbag, its “Dior” buckle sparkling under the lights. The sleek elegance radiated understated luxury.

"Excuse me," Lawrence asked Hailey, "how much is that one?"

Hailey’s eyes lit up with admiration as she looked at the bag. "Sir, that’s our signature piece. It was personally designed by Romance Nation’s master designer, Michelle Davis. Only nine hundred exist worldwide. The entire bag is crocodile leather, handcrafted from 144 components. The four ‘Dior’ letters are cut from crystal. Price: 280,000 dollars."

Lawrence nearly choked. Two hundred and eighty thousand for a bag? Rich people really do burn money for fun.

Still, looking at the silver bag, he couldn’t deny it suited Jasmine perfectly. Expensive, yes, but within his means now.

Mary seized the moment. "Miss Karen, this masterpiece is 280,000 yuan, but if you’d like, I can secure it for you at a discount—200,000 yuan."

Her excitement was obvious. Selling it would earn her a commission equal to months of salary.

"Honey, I adore it! Buy it for me, please. If you do, I’ll give you anything you want tonight." Karen clung to Dylan’s arm, her eyes gleaming with greed and triumph. Carrying this bag would elevate her above all her friends.

Dylan’s face tightened. He had no intention of wasting two hundred thousand dollars on her whims. "Baby, I didn’t bring that much cash today. Let’s pick something cheaper, around tens of thousands," he coaxed with a strained smile.

Mary’s disappointment was palpable. The sale was slipping through her fingers.

Lawrence stepped closer to the cabinet, studying the bag. He was about to speak when Karen’s venom struck.

"Lawrence? You again?" She rolled her eyes. "What’s a pauper like you doing here? Don’t even think of touching that bag. If you damage it, you couldn’t pay it off even if you sold yourself."

Her frustration with Dylan had nowhere to go, so she lashed out at Lawrence. He was the perfect target: easy to insult, powerless to fight back. Or so she thought.

Lawrence looked at her evenly, then shifted his gaze to Hailey. His voice was calm, almost flat.

"I’ll take this bag. Please wrap it up for me."

Jia stood for the girls. "My opponent's Scandinavian argument is a classic misuse of data. Those countries have strong social safety nets that allow people to follow preferences—but those preferences are still shaped by generations of cultural messaging. You can't separate 'free choice' from 'what society taught you to want.' True equality means examining why those gaps exist, not just accepting them as natural."Lucas stood for the boys, visibly nervous but pushing through. "Okay, but—but if we keep moving the goalposts, when do we declare victory? If it's never enough, then 'achievable' becomes a religious statement, not a practical one."Fang stood, quiet but precise. "Victory isn't a finish line. It's a direction. The question isn't 'have we arrived.' It's 'are we moving forward.' And we are. That's why it's achievable."Peng stood. "Moving forward indefinitely assumes infinite progress. Resources are finite. Attention is finite. Political will is finite. At some point, diminishin
