Chapter 6: Crown Black Gold Card

".."

Lawrence’s words stunned everyone. For a brief moment, silence reigned. Then the boutique erupted in mocking laughter.

"Hahaha! Lawrence, you, of all people, want to buy this bag?" Karen sneered, clutching Dylan’s arm as if it proved her superiority. "Don’t be ridiculous. With all the money you’ve scraped together in your pathetic life, you probably couldn’t even afford a single button on it."

"Heh, baby, don’t lump everyone with me," Dylan added with a smug grin. He tightened his arm around Karen’s waist, speaking loud enough for Lawrence to hear. "My family has tens of millions in the bank. The interest alone in a year is more than he’ll ever see in his lifetime."

Mary frowned impatiently. "This is absurd. I told you to behave, yet here you are causing trouble. Get out now, or I’ll call security."

Lawrence was dumbfounded. All I wanted was to buy a bag. Did I provoke anyone here? And who decided I couldn’t afford it?

Suppressing his irritation, Lawrence pulled a card from his pocket and placed it in Hailey’s hand. His tone was calm but firm. "Swipe the card. I’ll take the bag."

His sudden action froze the room for a moment then came another round of ridicule.

"Hahaha! Look at you playing cool with a toy card. Careful, Lawrence, or you’ll end up the punchline of your own joke," Karen mocked, folding her arms and glaring at him.

But Hailey’s reaction silenced her. The moment her eyes landed on the card, her expression changed drastically. Her hands trembled, and her voice rose in disbelief. "This… this is… the Crown Black Gold Card?"

Her shock rippled through the room.

How could a man dressed in plain clothes, who wasn’t a household name in business or politics, possess a card of this caliber?

During training, Hailey’s very first lesson had been about identifying the world’s most elite cards. At the top of the list, and drilled into every new employee as unforgettable, was this one. The Crown Black Gold Card. The instructions had been clear: if a holder of this card appeared, every request must be met without question.

Lawrence blinked in surprise. "Crown Black Gold Card? What’s that supposed to mean?"

The butler had never explained the details to him. He had assumed it was just an ordinary bank card.

Hailey’s face grew solemn. She bowed slightly and explained despite not knowing why someone with the card doesn't know it's uses, "It’s the supreme card issued by banks worldwide. There are only five in existence. Each one carries unlimited overdraft privileges. No limits, no deadlines, no interest. It represents the highest level of wealth and status on the planet."

Lawrence was speechless. Unlimited overdraft… only five in the world? And I just pulled it out thinking it was a normal card?

With visible respect, Hailey quickly returned the card to him. "Forgive me, sir. I can’t personally process this transaction."

Lawrence was even more bewildered. If it’s that powerful, why can’t she swipe it? Could it be fake? Impossible, the butler gave it to me himself. There’s at least ten million sitting in that account.

"As expected, a poor man is still a poor man," Mary interjected with a scornful laugh. "The card’s obviously fake."

She hadn’t heard a word of Hailey’s explanation, too busy nursing her contempt for Lawrence.

Hailey panicked and waved her hands. "No, Mary, you don’t understand. This gentleman truly holds a Crown Black Gold Card. I’ve never served such a distinguished guest before. I can’t make a mistake handling his business!"

Her voice shook with nerves. Losing a job was one thing, but offending a client of this level could ruin her life.

Mary finally looked closer, and her eyes widened. The gleaming crown insignia embedded with a diamond left no room for doubt.

It really is the Crown Black Gold Card.

Mary had worked at Dior long enough to know exactly what it represented. Ordinary Black Gold Cards, the kind touted as unlimited by banks, were glorified myths. The Crown version was the real deal no credit line, no repayment obligations, absolute privilege. And the holders were always world-shaking figures.

"Crown Black Gold Card? What nonsense," Karen snapped, waving dismissively. "I’ve never even heard of it. Don’t be fooled. It must be fake."

Dylan suddenly rounded on her, his face drenched in cold sweat. "You stupid woman, shut the hell up!"

Karen flinched. She had never seen Dylan so furious.

Unlike her, Dylan came from a business family. He knew this card’s reputation well. Though he’d never seen one in person, he could never mistake its design. The crown encrusted with a diamond wasn’t decoration—it was a symbol of supreme authority. With this card, Lawrence could bankrupt a listed company overnight.

The implications made Dylan’s skin crawl. If Lawrence truly belonged to the kind of family that could casually hand out such a card, the Xu family wasn’t even worth mentioning. If Lawrence held a grudge against Karen and vented his anger, the Xu family could be wiped from existence without effort. Conversely, if Dylan could ingratiate himself, he could ride Lawrence’s coattails to unimaginable heights.

Karen noticed Dylan’s sweat and paling face, and unease gripped her. She forced a laugh, but her voice wavered. "No… no way. He’s just a penniless orphan. How could someone like him own a card that powerful? It has to be fake."

Yet the more she denied it, the less convincing she sounded. Pride forced her chin up, and she doubled down. "Mary, call your higher-ups immediately. If you don’t, Dior’s reputation will be ruined by a fraud like him."

Her words jolted both Mary and Dylan.

That’s right—Lawrence had no family, no background, no connections. How could he possibly own the Crown Black Gold Card? No one could steal such a card, either. The contradiction gnawed at them, stirring suspicion and anger.

They had been tricked, humiliated by someone they thought beneath them. The thought burned like fire.

Hailey hesitated, torn between duty and fear. Unable to decide, she turned toward Mary and asked softly, "Mary… maybe we should call the manager to handle this?"

Jia stood for the girls. "My opponent's Scandinavian argument is a classic misuse of data. Those countries have strong social safety nets that allow people to follow preferences—but those preferences are still shaped by generations of cultural messaging. You can't separate 'free choice' from 'what society taught you to want.' True equality means examining why those gaps exist, not just accepting them as natural."Lucas stood for the boys, visibly nervous but pushing through. "Okay, but—but if we keep moving the goalposts, when do we declare victory? If it's never enough, then 'achievable' becomes a religious statement, not a practical one."Fang stood, quiet but precise. "Victory isn't a finish line. It's a direction. The question isn't 'have we arrived.' It's 'are we moving forward.' And we are. That's why it's achievable."Peng stood.
