Chapter Three

Marcus was stunned by what he had just heard. He couldn't believe it and quickly looked around to see if there was anyone else standing nearby.

"Are you talking to me?" he asked.

Sophia smiled and moved closer to him, gently resting her arm on his.

"Yes. You're my future husband-to-be. I know very well what I'm saying," she repeated.

Marcus nodded slowly, still feeling like none of this was real. He gently took her arm and removed it from his.

"Let's have some mutual respect for each other. This must be some kind of prank. I'm sorry, but I'm not interested," he replied.

Sophia simply smiled. "I'm very serious about this. The ring on your finger, wasn't it given to you by someone?"

Marcus immediately looked down at his finger. It was the ring his master had given him inside the prison.

How did she know about it?

"Yes. It was given to me by my master," he replied.

"Years ago, Master Arthur saved my grandfather's life. Since then, he has been a benefactor of the Wilson family. He's the one who arranged this marriage," Sophia explained.

Realization suddenly dawned on Marcus. This was the surprise Master Arthur had mentioned before he left the prison.

Marcus had been curious about what his master had planned for him, but he had never expected it to be something like this.

He couldn't deny that Sophia was an elegant and breathtakingly beautiful woman. However, he had just walked out of prison, divorced his wife, and found out that his mother was seriously ill. He didn't even know what condition his mother and younger sister were in.

"If this really has to happen, then it has to wait," Marcus finally said. "I can't just marry a stranger I met today. I have something more important to attend to."

Lily immediately stepped forward, struggling to contain her anger.

"Who do you think you are to turn down Lady Sophia of the Wilson family?" she demanded. "Lady Sophia is someone wealthy men all over the world would beg just to walk on the same ground she has stepped on. Some would even willingly worship her feet, and here you are..."

She stopped herself, but the disgust on her face became even more obvious.

"You're not even close to being worthy of standing beside her. You aren't even worthy of being her guard, let alone her husband."

"Lily," Sophia called calmly.

"I'm sorry, my lady," Lily replied, but she still couldn't hide her displeasure. "But I'll gladly say that I oppose this. This man isn't even close to standing behind you, not to mention standing beside you."

"I don't have an option, do I?" Sophia asked calmly. "Master Arthur saved my grandfather, and an agreement is an agreement. I can't go back on a promise that was made. The Wilson family is known for being generous and always keeping their promises, so I won't change my mind."

Marcus remained silent as he watched the two women.

They had no idea about his true abilities. That was the only reason they were looking down on him and treating him like someone who was beneath them.

And Marcus had no intention of telling them who he really was.

"Why do you think you can reject me?" Sophia suddenly asked, completely misunderstanding his words. "You must really think I'm not worthy of you."

There was a slight trace of anger in her voice as she stepped closer to him.

But the moment she moved, Marcus's expression suddenly changed.

His eyes narrowed as he noticed something wrong with her body.

"Stop."

Sophia froze.

"Don't move again," Marcus commanded.

His voice was so firm and authoritative that Sophia was stunned for a moment.

"You have serious injuries. Don't move anymore, or you'll make them worse," he warned.

Sophia stared at him in disbelief.

How did he know? Nobody was supposed to know she was sick.

Yet Marcus had noticed something was wrong with her after barely looking at her.

"How did you know I'm sick?" she demanded, her curiosity immediately replacing her anger. "Are you a doctor?"

"I'm not a doctor, but I can see through your illness through observation and physical contact," Marcus told her.

Sophia was deeply stunned.

"Really?" she asked.

Even though she had been suffering from a very severe illness for years, it was an extremely rare condition. Several of the world's best medical experts from top hospitals around the world had examined her, yet none of them had been able to identify exactly what was wrong with her.

And now Marcus had seen through her condition within minutes of standing beside her.

This was truly what she should have expected from a disciple of Master Arthur.

Sophia's interest in him deepened immediately.

"Do you have a solution if you can see through my sickness?" she demanded.

"Yes. I can treat you, and you'll be fine," Marcus replied calmly. "But first, I have to deal with an issue concerning my mother and younger sister."

A spark of hope suddenly appeared in Sophia's eyes.

For a long time, she had already given up on her condition. She had accepted her fate and only wanted to fulfill her family's wishes before eventually dying peacefully without becoming a burden to them.

But hearing Marcus say that he could actually treat her made her feel alive again. If someone had told her this so-called ex-convict fiance will be her savior she would have argued.. but guess he's the savior.

"Let me come with you to handle whatever issues your family must be facing" she offered.

"Inside, of course," he replied. He didn't raise his voice despite being in a hurry."And why do you think you belong here?" the other guard asked rudely.Marcus looked at him calmly. "And how did you know I don't belong here?"The guard sneered. "You could never belong in a place like this. Look at what you're wearing. The people allowed inside this clubhouse are business executives and people of extremely important status. You don't fit into any of those categories."Marcus took a deep breath. He wasn't here to argue with a couple of security guards.
