CHAPTER FIFTEEN
The woman lowered the broomstick slowly, though her hand still twitched like she was itching to bring it back down on Marco’s head. Her eyes narrowed as she scanned him from head to toe, squinting with clear suspicion. Marco stood still, his shirt stained with ketchup, his nose still slightly swollen from the humiliation at the diner. He looked exactly like what she thought he was...a stray, a good-for-nothing wandering off the street.Literally a homeless guy.“You’re serious?” she asked at last, her voice raspy, carrying the grit of someone who had yelled over laundry machines her entire life. “You really need a job, or are you expecting me to hand out charity because of your sorry looks?”Marco swallowed, forcing his voice to remain steady. He did not want to provoke her.“I’m not here for handouts,” he said quietly. “I need work. I...I’m sorry for looking like this. I was in an accident earlier, on my way here.”The woman snorted loudly, digging her index finger into her nostril w
CHAPTER FOURTEEN
The last of the fries disappeared between Marco’s teeth, the salt and grease settling like lead in his stomach. He wiped his hands with the thin paper napkin and stared at the half-empty cup of watered-down soda on the table. For a moment he considered ordering something else, but his pocket reminded him sharply of the reality he lived in now. The little money left had to stretch. He could not afford to linger. With a slow breath, Marco pushed back his chair and rose. The din of the diner swelled around him with clinking cutlery, the hiss of the fryer, conversations overlapping like this was a bad orchestra competition. He adjusted his jacket and turned toward the exit. But as fate would have it, a figure cut across his path at the same time. Marco bumped into the person, and before he could step back, a tray tilted, pouring hot food on his chest. The ketchup splattered across his shirt in a bright, ugly smear, the heat of the fries and grease searing briefly through the thin cotton.
CHAPTER THIRTEEN
The night clung heavy around Marco as he drove aimlessly through the dimly lit streets, the hum of the engine his only companion. He had left the clinic, but not with any destination in mind. The words of Elena still rang sharply in his ears…and he...well he was going to humour her.Still her words hurt him like a thousand needles piercing through his heart. He recalled how she had spoken to him and how her male companion assisted in making his rejection more heart wrenching like a viper spitting venom on an already weakened rat It was a rejection colder than death itself. Then he recalled the man's hand on the lower part of her back, although he could not confirm it but Marco could have sworn he saw the man smirk. He tightened his grip on the wheel until his knuckles whitened, his jaw clenched. He wanted to scream, to release the frustration that burned within him, but instead he kept driving, headlights cutting through the night like a blade.Marco could see now why everyone though
CHAPTER TWELVE
The night air smelled of oil and gasoline as Stefano shoved himself into the driver’s seat of his car. His hands turned the keys as his hand shook on the wheel, his eyes wide with fear, darting around as if the shadows themselves were closing in on him. Fear of a fugitive on the run. Without a second thought, he brought the engine to life. Marco narrowed his eyes, sprinting across the street, his footsteps heavy against the pavement.“Stefano!” he barked, his voice cutting through the night. But the only answer he received was the screech of tires as Stefano pressed hard on the accelerator. The car lurched forward and sped into the distance, taillights burning like two angry eyes as it disappeared around the corner.Marco stopped in his tracks, fists clenched. His chest heaved with frustration. He had him... he was so close. He turned his gaze toward the vehicle that had brought such panic to Stefano. It sat there, silent, the headlights still on, casting a pale glow across the stre

His mind was full of thoughts over what was happening.Indeed he had assisted Sal but only to save a life that Stefano and his cruel father placed on hold. The in-depthness of their cruelty was beginning to tell on him.Marco drove for a while until he found a parking area and stopped. Pausing as he lowered his window and inhaled the air.The night air was sharp, carrying with it the faint scent of gasoline and the city. For the first time that evening, silence settled around him. No footsteps. No voices. Just the heavy pulse of his own thoughts.Rosa was safe. That much he had ensured. Now came the harder part… ensuring everyone else’s safety. The city seemed asleep, but Marco knew better. Somewhe
CHAPTER TEN
Doctor Vincent approached Marco slowly, almost with a sense of relief, as if a weight had been taken off his shoulders after what had just happened. His voice was soft when he finally spoke, though his eyes betrayed his unease.“Marco… Thank you. For stepping in back there. I don’t know what would have happened if you hadn’t.” He hesitated, drawing a breath before adding with a guilty look, “But I am sorry too… sorry that I exposed your identity to someone else. I didn’t mean for it to happen that way.”Marco tilted his head slightly, studying the doctor’s face. He could see the sincerity, but also the fear that lingered beneath his words. After a pause, he finally answered, his tone calm and almost indifferent. “It’s fine, Dr. Castellano. Some things can’t remain hidden forever. Perhaps it was bound to happen. Either way, it’s time for me to leave.”“Where would you be going now?” The doctor asked him.“I'm headed for the pharmacy. I need to check on my mother, are you coming?”“Aft
