CHAPTER EIGHT

Evelyn’s silence lingered, and even though the words from her father were still resounding inside her mind, it seemed as though she wasn’t certain of what she heard.

Taking a deep breath, she turned to nod, but the fake smile on her face gave her father the impression that she had not agreed to obey him willingly.

Mr. Hart took a deep breath, and while he was still staring at his daughter, he took a deep breath, inching closer with two steps.

He had a smile on his face as well, but it was only a matter of time before it vanished, struggling to remain alongside the strands of guilt and tension etched all over him as well.

“I am so sorry, my dear. I am sorry that I am putting you in this kind of situation. You do not deserve it, not even an ounce of it…” He sighed in despair, but that didn’t look like it was going to be able to change anything.

At that moment, the silence between daughter and Father lingered, but it was only a matter of time before Mr. Hart became so uncomfortable with it that he decided it was time for him to get rid of it.

He took a deep breath, turning to face his daughter with the same forced smile all over his face.

“My Princess?” He called out with a soft tone, causing the young lady to eventually turn to look at him, worry buried deep inside her eyes.

“I know that this is a lot. But you have to do it for the sake of the family. I assure you that this is not going to be for so long, and I will do everything possible just to make sure that I make it as easy as possible.” Mr. Hart swore, but it was already looking like he needed more than just words to be able to convince his daughter.

Again, he took a deep breath, and when that didn’t seem like it was enough, he sighed heavily, hoping that he was going to be able to release some of the cringe that gripped him.

“Do this for us, Evelyn…” He said quietly, rubbing Evelyn’s shoulders from the moment he grabbed her with both hands.

His smile was still intact, but it was barely holding onto the beam that was cemented with it earlier.

He looked into his daughter’s eyes, and finding it difficult to ignore the pain he saw, he looked away slowly, blinking until he eventually decided to return his gaze to her.

“I promise you…” He broke his silence, his voice slowly losing its grip.

“You will get whatever you desire as soon as all of this is over…” He paused again, but this time it was only for a few seconds.

He was trying to be certain that she was still paying attention before he could continue after he had cleared his throat.

“This is going to be tough, I know…” He nodded to affirm his words, then he sighed yet again.

His following tone bore the burden of the guilt and annoyance that had gripped him, causing him to clear his throat again.

“You can choose not to do any other thing for me for the rest of your life, Evelyn. Just do this last one and I will make sure you are as free as a bird…”

Evelyn lifted her face to look at her father, and in addition, she arched her brows, curiosity patched on her face.

“Are you sure about that, Father?” She asked, and without delay, the middle-aged man nodded, looking more confident than he was earlier.

“I already gave you my word, Evelyn. You can do whatever you want with your time. There is no going back on that…”

“Good…” Evelyn chuckled softly, and then she took a deep breath, staring at her father with a smile.

At that moment, it felt like the middle-aged man had made a very terrible mistake, but he couldn’t go back on his words, not when the young lady was already holding tightly to the opportunity as though her life depended on it.

“There is one thing I want, Dad…” Evelyn discarded the silence, staring into her father’s eyes with her smirk intact.

Mr. Hart swallowed hard, staring into his daughter’s eyes as well, as though he could read her mind.

“Why does it feel like I already know what this is?” He questioned, causing his daughter to nod.

“You already know what it is, Dad…” She whispered, nodding slowly.

“But don’t worry, I will make sure that I stay in touch, Dad. You wouldn’t have to miss me for so much…” She assured, but that didn’t mean that her father was going to get any better.

Mr. Hart gave the situation a quick thought, and then he nodded reluctantly.

“We have a deal, Evelyn. Do what I have asked, and you can do what you desire.”

“Excellent!” Evelyn gasped, and almost like a bird that had been released from its cage, she embraced her father, kissing him on both cheeks.

“Haskins University, here I come!” She exclaimed, drifting away while her father watched her disappear.

After the Qingming Festival, a continuous drizzle turned the streets and alleys of Qingzhou into muddy quagmires.Having spent these days traveling outside, Xiao Ming was thoroughly fed up with trudging through ankle-deep mud. He thought to himself that if they could hold Cangzhou, he would definitely build several cement roads crisscrossing Qingzhou upon his return, while also revamping the city’s drainage system. After all, infrastructure was one of the essential projects for developing his fiefdom. Moreover, creating a superior living environment could attract merchants from across the Great Yu Empire to settle in Qingzhou.By then, selling land—ah, the legendary land finance—would become a reality.Rainy days were inevitably dull. With the Armaments Department having completed Luo Xin’s plate armor, Xiao Ming summoned him over, intending to ask him a few things while he was at it.“Your Highness, the plate armor is ready so soon?”This set of armor was naturally meant to placate L

The tea on the table exuded a faint fragrance, and the room was silent.Luo Quan stared at Fei Ji for a long time before speaking. “With His Majesty’s wisdom, how could he not see the current state of the empire? If so, why not send the imperial guards to Qingzhou?”“General Luo, if it were that simple, His Majesty wouldn’t be so furious. The King of Zhao wants nothing more than to divert disaster eastward. If the imperial guards mobilize, the barbarians will surely attack the fiefdoms of the Kings of Yong, Zhao, and Liang to contain them. Do you think they would agree? If His Majesty insists and provokes the barbarians, those kings need only deliberately let the barbarians through to threaten Chang’an directly. Thus, the imperial guards cannot move. The best outcome now is for the King of Wei to assist the Prince of Qi in holding Qingzhou. After all, the King of Wei is powerful among the vassal kings. If he commits fully, defending Cangzhou shouldn’t be a problem.”“But the King of W

Chang’an City, Qiushan District. This was a well-known commoner district in Chang’an, for it was home to the illustrious Fei family—renowned for producing “three dukes in four generations,” with disciples and former subordinates spread across the empire. On any given day, the Fei residence bustled with visitors—high-ranking officials, scholars, and even military generals. The reason was simple: the Fei family’s prestige was unparalleled. Unlike other powerful clans that dominated regions, the Fei family had maintained an unbroken presence in the imperial court through multiple dynasties, their cultural heritage far surpassing ordinary noble houses. As a result, the noble families of the Great Yu Empire considered it an honor to marry a Fei daughter. Such a union elevated their status, allowing their descendants to hold their heads higher in official circles. In a realm where aristocratic influence ran deep, bloodlines mattered immensely. A cool breeze rustled through the treetops.Luo Xin glanced at Lu Fei, who showed no reaction to the poem he had just recited. Luo Xin sighed inwardly. Born into a military family for generations, yet I’m no match for a man of humble origins, he thought with some bitterness.Lu Fei, on the other hand, was confused by Luo Xin’s intense gaze. He had only understood the general meaning of the poem and hadn’t felt the same deep emotion as Luo Xin.“You’re not leaving?” Xiao Ming asked with a smile. These days, he’d been training military scribes to boost morale in the army and found himself speaking more like a political instructor than a prince.“I only wish to be a general defending the borders,” Luo Xin said seriously. “But as for Captain Lu, I can’t forgive him.”Lu Fei rolled his eyes.Luo Xin added, “Unless Your Highness gives me a full set of plate armor so I can fight him fairly.”Xiao Ming sighed in frustration. So the two of you want to settle your grudge, and I’m the one who ha
