“Brother!” Qing’s voice rang from the bed chamber as Shen Wuyin stepped in.

He stood still, his gaze locked on his reflection in the mirror across the room.

Just then, Mei and Qing ran towards Shen Wuyin. When they reached him, they wrapped their arms around his legs, burying their faces in his robe.

“Brother, you came back.” Mei muttered.

The warmth from their little embrace shifted something within Shen Wuyin. A warm smile tugged at the corners of his lips.

“You thought I was going to get lost? “ He sneered playfully.

Mei and Qing lifted their heads and met his gaze.

Mei sucked her teeth, her nostrils flattened. “You participated in the moon meet and knowing how much beating you have received so far…”

She released her grip on his legs and straightened. “…it is normal for us to be worried and excited on your return.”

Shen Wuyin raised a brow. “Oh, I see.” He scoffed.

Qing let go of his legs and stepped back.

“How come you came back without a scratch?” She asked, curiosity etched in her voice.

Stepping away from them, Shen Wuyin walked over to the bench across the room and sat, his gaze locked on the girls.

“Am I really that weak?” He asked, tilting his head to the side.

Mei and Qing crossed the distance.

“No you aren’t. We are just shocked to see that you contended with all those possible high level cultivators without getting injured.” Mei responded.

Qing hopped onto the bench and sat on Shen Wuyin’s lap. Reaching for his chin, she asked, “So tell us, who won the meet?”

Mei climbed onto the bench and sat at Shen Wuyin’s side.

“Yes, tell us.” She nudged.

Just then, their mother walked in, her steps slow and steady, but firmer than before.

“Yun.” She called out, her voice soft but steady.

Mei and Qing rose to their feet, giving Shen Wuyin room to meet Wang Jun.

Immediately, he rose to his feet and crossed the distance. Wang Jun threw her arms around him.

“Hope you aren’t badly injured?” She asked, motherly concern evident in her voice.

Shen Wuyin sank into her embrace.

It feels good getting to experience the love and affection of a mother. Shen Wuyin thought.

“No, I’m not.” He responded before burying his head in her strands. The scent of lavender filled his nostrils.

Yun Li, I will do all I can to help your family and protect them from all harm. That’s my promise to you.

Shen Wuyin muttered inwardly. Luo Yuyan’s healing technique already had a significant effect. She looked way better than before.

Wang Jun released her grip and stepped back. She ran her gaze over Shen Wuyin, her eyes widening with disbelief.

“You didn’t get hurt?”

Shen Wuyin nodded. “I was careful not to.”

“Tell us, who won?” Mei nudged, urgency evident in her tone.

Shen Wuyin straightened. “I did. I won the meet.” He responded curtly.

Wang Jun’s lips parted. Her daughters’ eyes widened sharply.

“Yun, you know you don’t have to lie to me.” His mother said, reaching for his chin.

Shen Wuyin held her wrist. “I’m not lying, ma.”

“What? You won? How? Yes you did fight off Chen Ruoxi’s father’s men back at Ashen Sky, but this…this is different.” Wang Jun stepped closer, staring into his eyes. “One of the maidens had told me that this year’s contestants was more than they’ve had in years and not just by numbers, but they were also gifted and experienced too.”

Shen Wuyin let out a loud sigh. “Why would I lie about winning? And why don’t you all believe I actually did?”

Just then, a soft knock came on the door, cutting through the tension.

“Come in.” Shen Wuyin responded.

Immediately, the door slid open, revealing Luo Yuyan.

He walked in with a few maidens beside him. Each of them held a woven basket covered with blue fabrics in their hands.

Shen Wuyin and his family bowed their heads in reverence.

Luo Yuyan stood before Shen Wuyin, a deep, warm smile spread across his lips.

“Please sit.” Shen Wuyin gestured to the bench across the room.

“No. No need. I’ll only be here for a few minutes.” Luo Yuyan said, his smile steady.

Shen Wuyin nodded.

Luo Yuyan shifted his gaze to Wang Jun. “Wang Jun, how are you feeling now?”

Yun Li’s mother smiled briefly. “I feel much better. Thank you so much for taking me and my family in.” She pressed her fists together over her chest and bowed curtly.

Luo Yuyan waved his hand gently before turning to Shen Wuyin.

“Congratulation once again on wining this year’s meet challenge.” He placed a hand on Shen Wuyin’s shoulder.

Shen Wuyin nodded. “Thank you for hosting us.”

Yun Li’s family’s lips parted.

He really won the meet. Wang Jun muttered inwardly, her gaze locked on Shen Wuyin.

One of the maidens stepped forward and handed the basket in her hand to Shen Wuyin.

“That’s a token for protecting my daughter despite how adamant she was.” Luo Yuyan said.

Shen Wuyin lowered his gaze to the basket and then back at Luo Yuyan.

Luo Yuyan shrugged.

Shen Wuyin lifted the blue fabric. The moment his gaze hit the basket, he turned to Luo Yuyan sharply, extending the basket back to the maiden.

“I’m sorry but I can’t accept this.” He said bluntly.

Luo Yuyan’s brows knitted. “Why?”

“A sky level dao robe? That’s too much already.” Shen Wuyin responded.

Wang Jun stepped forward.

Before she could say a word, Luo Yuyan began.

“You deserve every token I give.” He tapped Shen Wuyin’s shoulder once more. “I don’t just see potential in you to excel beyond the mortal world, but I see a good husband and leader for my Mo Yueli.”

The moment those words left Luo Yuyan’s lips, Shen Wuyin’s eyes widened.

He shook his head. “No, elder Luo Yuyan, I still can’t accept this.”

Luo Yuyan lowered his hand to his side and let out a sharp sigh.

“Okay then. Please rest up. Tomorrow the fiftieth batch of retrievers will be recruited into the southern realm and I would like for you to go with them so you can see how things are done and gain experience.”

“The southern realm?” Shen Wuyin asked.

“Yes.” Luo Yuyan nodded.

He clasped his hands behind his back and walked a few steps toward the door before stopping.

“It is one of the least spiritual realms that opens at the top of Mount Sinep.”

Shen Wuyin's brows rose slightly.

“Least spiritual?” He muttered.

Luo Yuyan nodded.

“Compared to the other realms, the spiritual energy there is weak. But that does not make it useless.”

His gaze shifted back to Shen Wuyin.

“In fact, that is why we send cultivators there.”

Shen Wuyin's curiosity grew.

“What do they retrieve?”

“Beast cores.” Luo Yuyan responded. “There are mid-level beasts within the realm, and many of them possess rather interesting abilities.”

He gestured toward the baskets still in the maidens’ hands.

“The cores they leave behind can be useful for many techniques. Some can even produce blessings when used with the right techniques.”

Shen Wuyin nodded slowly.

Luo Yuyan smiled.

“You have won the meet, but there is still much for you to learn. Seeing how the retrievers operate will give you experience that cannot be gained from simply cultivating within the sect.”

Shen Wuyin remained silent for a moment before nodding.

“I understand.”

Luo Yuyan smiled.

“Good. Then rest well tonight. You will leave with them tomorrow.”

With that, Luo Yuyan turned and walked toward the door, the maidens following behind him.

Shen Wuyin watched him leave, his gaze thoughtful.

The Southern Realm…
