Trevor stepped out of the black sedan and closed the door behind him without looking back.

He had arrived at the city through a small fishing boat instead of a passenger ferry. The fewer people who noticed him, the better. After reaching the dock, he hired a taxi to Leaf District, the busiest area near the harbor. The driver dropped him a few streets away, and Trevor continued on foot toward another pickup point.

His body still ached from the journey, but he ignored it.

He had spent years waiting for this day. Nothing was going to stop him from seeing his fiancée.

He reached an intersection and took a step forward.

A deafening engine suddenly ripped through the street.

Trevor raised his head.

A red sports car shot toward him like a bullet.

It wasn't slowing down.

The distance disappeared in an instant.

Trevor's eyes narrowed.

Bang!

He thrust both palms against the front of the speeding car.

A loud metallic crunch echoed across the street as the hood caved inward beneath his hands. The impact forced him back half a step, sending a sharp pain through his injured arms, but he refused to let go.

The sports car came to a complete stop.

Silence followed.

Then...

Crack!

A small jade pendant slipped from beneath Trevor's shirt.

It struck the ground and shattered into several pieces.

Trevor froze.

His breathing stopped for a moment.

He slowly knelt and picked up every broken fragment with trembling fingers.

The pendant wasn't valuable.

To anyone else, it was just a cheap piece of pale green jade.

But to Trevor...

It was the only thing his mother had ever left him.

The last time he saw her, she had tied it around his neck with her own hands.

He had protected it for years.

Now it was gone.

Trevor carefully placed the broken pieces into his pocket before standing up.

His expression had completely changed.

The driver's door opened.

A tall woman stepped out first.

She carried herself with effortless confidence. Her tailored business coat, tied-back platinum hair, and calm blue eyes made it obvious she wasn't an ordinary woman.

Another woman quickly got out from the passenger seat.

Unlike the first, she wore her arrogance openly.

She glanced at the damaged hood before glaring at Trevor.

"Are you blind?" she snapped. "You almost got yourself killed!"

Trevor looked at her coldly.

"I almost got myself killed?"

His voice was calm, but every word carried weight.

"You were the one driving like the road belonged to you."

He pointed at the crushed front of the sports car.

"If I hadn't stopped your car, someone would be lying dead on this street."

The shorter woman laughed mockingly.

"You stopped it?"

She folded her arms.

"That's the funniest thing I've heard today. The brakes stopped the car."

Trevor didn't bother responding.

People who had already made up their minds never listened.

His silence only made her angrier.

"What? Cat got your tongue?"

She took another step forward.

"Or are you planning to ask for a fortune because your cheap necklace broke?"

"Lisa."

The cold voice instantly stopped her.

The blonde woman finally spoke.

"Enough."

"But, Miss Vivian..."

"I said enough."

Lisa bit her lip and reluctantly stepped back, though the hostility in her eyes remained.

Vivian turned her attention to Trevor.

Her gaze lingered on the crushed hood before settling on his face.

For the first time, she noticed something unusual.

This man had stopped a speeding sports car with his bare hands.

Yet he wasn't looking at the vehicle.

He only cared about the broken pendant in his pocket.

After a brief silence, Vivian spoke.

"It appears I've caused you some trouble."

Her tone remained calm and professional.

"Tell me."

"How much do you want as compensation?"

"How much?"

Trevor let out a cold scoff before slowly shaking his head. His fingers unconsciously brushed against the broken jade pieces inside his pocket as he looked at Vivian with an indifferent gaze. "You think money can solve everything?" he asked calmly. "You can't afford what you broke."

Lisa froze for a second before bursting into laughter. She looked Trevor up and down with unconcealed contempt, her eyes lingering on his ordinary military uniform. "You can't be serious," she said mockingly. "Do you even know who you're talking to? Miss Vivian's personal fortune could buy this entire district, yet you're standing there claiming she can't afford a cheap jade pendant. Where did you buy it? Some roadside stall?"

Trevor remained expressionless. "Her identity means nothing to me," he replied. "And if I wanted to, I could buy this entire city."

Lisa laughed even louder. "Buy the whole city?" she repeated. "Did you hit your head on the way here? First you pretend your broken pendant is priceless, and now you're talking about buying an entire city. That's the most ridiculous thing I've heard today."

"Lisa," Vivian said calmly, stopping her before she could continue.

Lisa reluctantly closed her mouth, although the sneer on her face remained. Vivian looked at Trevor carefully. Unlike Lisa, she wasn't quick to dismiss him as a liar. A man who could stop a speeding sports car with his bare hands was certainly unusual. Even so, she refused to believe the broken pendant was something beyond her ability to compensate.

"I don't have time to argue," Vivian said flatly. "Just tell me its value. I'll pay you ten times the price."

Trevor slowly closed his hand over his pocket. "When you damage something precious, the first thing you should do isn't offer money," he said. "You apologize first. Besides, I've already told you. You can't afford it."

Lisa rolled her eyes and folded her arms. "I knew it," she sneered. "You're just another scammer who saw a rich woman driving an expensive sports car and thought you hit the jackpot."

Trevor's eyes turned colder. "You think too highly of yourselves."

He had only just returned, yet he had already met people whose arrogance seemed to know no limits. He no longer had any interest in wasting another second on them. Ignoring Lisa completely, he walked past both women and continued toward the bus stop.

Lisa's face darkened the moment she realized he was leaving. "Hey! Stop right there!" she shouted, but Trevor didn't even slow his pace. She gritted her teeth and yelled after him, "You should be grateful Miss Vivian even offered to compensate you! With your salary, you wouldn't earn enough in your lifetime to buy a single wheel on that Porsche!"

Trevor finally paused. He turned his head slightly, his face calm but his eyes icy. "I don't need a worthless car," he said before continuing to walk away.

Trevor didn't bother saying another word. He had already made up his mind that continuing the conversation was a waste of time. Without looking back, he adjusted the strap of his travel bag and walked away, leaving the two women standing beside the damaged sports car.

Lisa glared at his back until he disappeared into the crowd. She let out an annoyed snort and crossed her arms. "That guy has a serious attitude problem. I've never seen someone so full of himself."

Vivian watched Trevor for another second before withdrawing her gaze. "Forget about him," she said calmly. "There's no point arguing with someone we'll never meet again."

Lisa nodded in agreement. "You're right. He was obviously trying to act mysterious. Maybe he thought if he talked big enough, you'd be scared into giving him a huge settlement."

Vivian didn't respond. She walked back to the driver's side, opened the door, and sat behind the wheel. The encounter had already wasted enough of her time, and she had something far more important occupying her thoughts.

Her grandfather's sudden decision to arrange her engagement still made no sense to her.

She tightened her grip on the steering wheel for a brief moment before starting the engine.

Lisa settled into the passenger seat and fastened her seat belt. "Are we still going to the manor?"

Vivian started the car and nodded. "Yes."

Her voice was calm, but there was no room for discussion.

"I'm getting my answers today."

The sports car pulled away from the roadside and disappeared into the traffic as Vivian headed straight for her grandfather's residence, determined to find out why he insisted on an engagement she had never agreed to.
