The man who screamed outside Trial District's gate was not being attacked. His countdown had reached zero while he waited for permission to enter.
He fell beside the queue barriers, clutching his chest. A woman in a gray contestant vest knelt to check his pulse, but the nearest officer told her to remain in line. His body was collected by an unattended service trolley while the registration screens continued displaying cheerful instructions.
Elias watched the trolley disappear. No monster had killed the man, no weapon had been fired. A deadline and a queue had done the work.
Elias crouched where the man had fallen and found a dropped ticket bearing a queue number. It listed an arrival time and a promised processing window. The promised window had already expired. He put the ticket in his pocket. Even if it was worthless as evidence, somebody should remember that this death had a number and a place.
"The qualification clock isn't a shared countdown," Tessa said over his earpiece. "Every applicant is spending personal Life Balance while waiting for one of twelve extraction permits. The System doesn't guarantee anyone survives the application."
Rafi stood behind Elias, clutching an old canvas equipment bag. "We're inside a game where the entrance f*e is waiting to die."
"We're inside a licensing process," Tessa answered. "Someone designed it to feel inevitable."
A public board announced three qualifying routes: apprehend a fugitive, recover a tagged evidence package, or restore a damaged civic system. The first paid the greatest individual time reward. The last awarded the highest verified cooperation score, but only when every participating worker was identified.
Elias selected restoration.
Rafi looked toward the fugitive route, where heavily armed hunters were already running. "That's the slow one."
"Then we start now."
Their assignment led to the underground pumping station, a concrete complex that supplied emergency water to district shelters. A red tag marked the final working pump as out of service. Its status camera showed a flooded access trench and an electrical cabinet with its cover torn loose.
RESTORATION OBJECTIVE: REACTIVATE EMERGENCY PUMP.
REWARD: +00:35:00, 100 XP. FAILURE: -00:15:00. PARTICIPANT VERIFICATION REQUIRED.Elias remembered the bent jack from the railway tunnel and resisted the urge to accept immediately. "What counts as failure?"
Tessa pulled the public contract appendix. "If you accept and the pump isn't running before the district event closes. We have fifty-two minutes."
"How many people have working knowledge of this equipment?" Elias asked the queue.
Nobody answered until a woman in a grease-darkened vest stepped forward. She introduced herself as June Ilyan, a maintenance apprentice with twenty-three minutes remaining on her clock. A second man offered insulated gloves. A third admitted he could read the wiring diagrams but had never touched a pump.
"We share the work," Elias told them. "Everyone enters their name."
A stocky hunter wearing an intact Level Four insignia laughed from the opposite line. "Shared XP won't give you extra extraction permits. I'm Dax Merrow. Remember the name when you're still standing here tomorrow."
"Tomorrow is ambitious," Rafi replied. "I heard you had to queue."
Merrow walked away without smiling.
June studied the contract card. "If all six of us sign, does the time reward split?"
"Individual restoration credits for verified contributors," Tessa said after checking the rules. "The work must be recorded. The permit score is assessed separately."
They accepted. Downstairs, the access trench smelled of rust and flooded insulation. Elias set Rafi to securing the safety rail while June tested the breaker with a meter. She reported a live feed where the municipal diagram said there was none.
"Somebody left it energized," she said. "A person stepping into that water would have died before reaching the pump."
Elias looked at the damaged cabinet. The cover screws lay together on a dry shelf. They had been removed carefully, not torn out by floodwater. This was no accidental equipment fault.
His interface offered Trajectory Assist, but the sensor overlay could predict moving objects, not distinguish safe wires from live ones. He left it inactive. June knew more than he did, and she had a meter.
"We need the upstream isolator," she said. "That means reaching a locked switchroom."
The switchroom door bore a trial marker and an inspection seal signed by Dax Merrow. Elias checked its timestamp. It had been issued six minutes before Merrow joined the queue.
"He was here already," Elias said.
Inside the cabinet, a relay clicked. The pump's emergency shutdown sequence began transmitting a countdown of its own.

Chapter 32: The Rehearsal Clock
Elias surrendered his extraction permit before the board could take it away.He pressed ACCEPT beneath the witness-access condition. The gate printed a receipt showing that his permit had been returned to the district pool, and a second card authorized him to visit Mara under supervised review. He looked at the names of the remaining qualifiers. June and Anika still held their places. His choice had not displaced either of them."You're staying," Rafi said."Someone has to stand beside the witness," Elias replied. "You can take the evidence outside."Rafi shook his head. "I haven't been qualified yet. But I can finish another mission. I'm not leaving her here without proof."Tessa studied the notice attached to Elias's receipt. "The permit pool should refill with the next eligible applicant. Instead it's marked held by administrative review. They're trying to prevent another person from benefiting.""Then record it," Elias said. "Everything they do now leaves a trail."An officer esco
Chapter 31: Twelve Names on the Board
Director Severin Kade's authorization appeared on a public printer that Merrow could no longer reach.Elias held the page beneath the balcony light while contestants crowded around the qualification board. Their faces were gray with exhaustion. Forty minutes earlier they had nearly detained June for a bounty. Now some of the same people were asking whether their own identities could be copied without consent."We release this immediately," Rafi said."Not yet," Tessa replied. "It proves Kade's authority signed the batch. It doesn't prove he personally ordered Mara's disposal. If we overclaim, they'll dismiss the evidence as a false accusation."Elias hated the patience required. He could hear Mara below the floor, answering Dr. Orin's questions while her custody band ticked through another appeal cycle. But Tessa was right: the evidence had survived because every step could be independently checked. Rage would not make a weaker claim stronger. The qualification board sounded a two-min
Chapter 30: The Cost of Telling the Truth
June's voluntary time transfer became a criminal allegation before Anika finished speaking. The warrant charged June with financing an unauthorized identity disclosure. Every hunter at the qualification board received the same offer: detain her for ninety minutes of Life Balance and a priority extraction permit. Several contestants turned toward her. They had spent the morning watching people die in queues; desperation made the offer look less like a crime than a door opening.Rafi stepped between June and the nearest hunter. "She's the one who got the water running. You'd still be downstairs without her.""The System doesn't pay for gratitude," the man said. He was broad-shouldered, with a cracked visor and a clock showing only eighteen minutes. He looked more frightened than cruel.Elias displayed the signed transfer consent. "She gave time from her own balance. Nothing was stolen. The accusation is about what Anika said afterward, not the transfer itself.""Then prove it before my
Chapter 29: Contestant One Hundred Seventeen
The permit board counted 117 applicants, but Mara had seen a hundred and eighteen names. She checked the list from the holding-lane terminal while Dr. Orin watched the clinical chair. The machine's restraint arms had folded back into their housing after judicial review was required. Mara was no longer scheduled for immediate disposal, but the escort band still prevented her from leaving Gate Seven."There's an extra record," she told Elias over the maintenance speaker. "Same fingerprint template as mine. Different contestant number."Elias had just escaped the archive when her call reached him. Rafi and June had lifted the manual shutter using a service crank, with a clerk observing to document that nobody had damaged the evidence vault. He arrived at the control-room balcony carrying the paper custody chain."Who is it?" he asked."Contestant Zero. The entry has no person attached, only an identity match. Its registered location is the medical holding floor."Tessa opened the public
Chapter 28: The Name on the Receipt
The archive accused Tessa Rook of removing the key that had authorized Mara's execution.Elias stood with the door's cold metal against his back and read the receipt twice. Custodian: Tessa Rook. The withdrawal date was eighteen months old, during the compliance audit that ended her career. Her signature looked authentic down to the slight break in the last letter."Tessa," he said into the channel, "your name is on the physical withdrawal record."Silence, then a measured breath. "Read me the control number."He did. Somewhere in the booth, she typed quickly. "That was my audit. I requested a sealed sample of retired credentials to test whether legacy ports could be abused. I never took possession. The receiving clerk signed the handover.""Who was the clerk?""The name was removed from the final report. I objected. My objection is part of why they fired me.""And you never told me?""I told you I approved a policy I regret. I didn't know your credential was in the sample. I didn't k
Chapter 27: The Retired Key
Merrow's name on the service label turned a forged signature into a physical trail.Elias photographed the label through Rafi's feed. The timestamp placed Merrow inside the clinical receiver room shortly before Mara's transfer. If an independent inspector could match his visit to the device logs, the execution order might finally be blocked rather than suspended."Get the work-order number," Tessa said. "A service label isn't proof he changed the wiring."June found the carbon copy tucked behind the cabinet and read the number. Rafi's hands shook as he filmed it. From somewhere above them came the rattle of a metal door and a voice ordering unauthorized personnel to clear the shaft."Inspection team, identify yourselves," the voice called.Rafi looked at June. "We are an inspection team, right?""We're registered witnesses to an active safety incident," she answered. "That's enough to keep filming."The hatch opened. Merrow descended halfway down the ladder with two private guards. He
