PAST BED TIME
last update2026-01-28 13:49:03

Outside of the lab looked a lot different with the absence of the military fleet; a sole military jeep sat on this devil's terrains. Lorne was in charge of driving, but he was adjusting something beneath the vehicle. Sir Garfield was asleep, such straineous battle were to extreme for his frail body. Captain Jane and Sarah were mapping out the best route back to Zuru town.

Zuru was managed by the military when the apocalypse occurred. Some commoners harbored concerns about it due to the level of safety and reassurance, while others evaded to avoid tension or hide their dirty paws.

Max was busy eating the rations he had ransacked from the rest, while everyone else ate after they retrieved the core, which was now in a box held to the chest of the sleeping professor. He seemed to be a heavy snorer; it was obvious from the disgruntled expressions on the faces of Marc and Henrik, who were reading a novel and a magazine, respectively. Henrik's eyes were glazed over, though he hadn't been himself ever since Rios' death. He felt guilty. Sarah handed him her magazine collection, which he always wanted to see, to help him get over it, although he held it in a reading pose, his eyes hardly stared at the pages.

An oil-patched Lorne rolled out beneath the vehicle, cleaning his oiled hands.

"Alright, she's ready to go. The energy might run loose, so we should hope we don't have a reason to do so."Lorne swiped his sweat as Sarah helped him with water.

"Good, so we set off..?" Jane asked the team after hopping in front seat.

There were trees with their leaves green and tinged with the blue of mutation; it was a common view as their figures got smaller with the vehicle getting farther away. A new tree stood amongst the many. It lacked the blue tint of mutation that the rest had. It was a typical normal tree, brown bark, green leaves, except for the extra huge stumps, which could still be classified as normal.

It was beautiful. Lorne slowed down a bit; the vehicle staggered from crossing a bump, waking the sleepy Garfield just in time to witness the lovely view. Garfield smiled, and so did the sober.

The crew's mood was jolly for a while until a shadow encroached from the horizon.

"What's that ?"Max satup and asked

"it a storm, we should change directions so we spend the night elsewhere to avoid the storm. The storms after the apocalypse have a minor chance of mutation. Lorne, please, take the right straight away. There ought to be a residential area close by."

They headed down before the vehicle gave in, so they had to trek the rest of the journey. They finally came across a residential area, but the neighborhood was hostile to strangers. This was so upsetting it had Marc at bay with one of the elders of these savages. Good thing Henrik was there to keep him from going rogue.

it wasnt easy though, Marc was a maniac, but he soon calmed down with just a glare from max so everyone prepared to leave.

"Aunty, aunty .... I know..  a place" a young child with a wretched outlook and a gap in his mouth indicated his already fallen tooth. He was wearing an oversized top, torn and hardly fits one arm was even slacked the other couldn't sit on his shoulders.

He was pulling at Jane's trousers. Jane gave the rest of the neighbors a look, but they acted like they didn't see the girl. She ignored them and went on her knee bring out a biscuit from her pack.

"you can have this if you help us with a place to sleep for the night." immediately jane said these words it attracted the attention of the rest of the hostile group making them change their view of the military strays but none budged though luxuries like buiscuits were hard to come by, the apocalypse was still early they could always be lucky but there would be greedy ones in the bunch.

"Hey boss aunty, if you give us five of those biscuits, we can help you bunch out, hehheheh, "a lean disheveled man with black teeth and long earrings spat as he watched the captain's figure seductively, raising displeasure among the crew. Sarah was gonna bash him when Jane signalled, so she could only swallow her anger and fold her arms.

But Jane did the unthinkable; she stepped up and reached him with a smile." So you said you know a place, where's this place you speak of?"

"hehehe, that would be my house gegegege!" the lean man laughed evily as he made a fast grab at jane who evaded the sadist's grip easily and even counterattacked with a kick, hitting him square on the chest. He flew back and crashed heavily into a ban. causing panic in the hostiles, some men even wanted to avenge the wounded pervert, so they tried ganging up, but they forgot she wasnt alone

"How disgusting....wasted bunch."LOrne spat, pulling out his electric bashing pole, hitting one man in his crutch

"Hmph,u want her? You would need to get past us," Sarah threatened

The trio took down thirteen able men easily, as if they were dealing with kids, with Lorne dealing with eight on his own.

Max, Garfield, Marc, and Henrik watched with no interest in joining the fun. Max even yawned as if bored by such childish play. Garfield was in support of the captain's actions; she had lost her martial respect if she wasn't this fiery. The kid watched from one corner.

"Even brother snake was beaten to paste ...who just are these people? "the kid thought to himself, shivering,

"its fine, we won't hurt you...now..lead the way. its past bedtime!"

An orb glowed on a ring-shaped plate. A scientist wearing a face shield was reassembling the orb with a picker and spatula for what felt like the ten-thousandth time. He had tried multiple patterns already. Hopefully, this time would be a success."Hey, Lorne, would you hand me the chip of the core? That should be the final piece to this puzzle. Let's pray it doesn't explode." • it's not the letter.... it's the mail that's off.

“Is that the last one?” Jane said to the secretary, who was tidying up the papers on the table. She on the other hand, was sipping her morning coffee from her mug.“Yes, Captain, that was the last one,” the secretary said anxiously.“Leave the rest to me, then,” Jane reassured her, her hands picking up the paper on the table before she took her seat and gave the chair a twirl.Sigh...“I sent letters to five different destinations, secretly, to those I found fitting for the Special Squad. Those I could trust, as they would focus more on missions outside the base,” Jane said out loud, though she didn’t seem to be talking to anyone. She had chosen individuals known for their resourcefulness and who had proven their loyalty through past missions. Each had unique qualities: a strategist who could outsmart adversaries, a medic who excelled in high-pressure situations, and a technician with unrivalled skills in hacking and engineering, making them indispensable for missions beyond base bor

The birds were screeching just beneath the clouds as the sun set on the event of the day.An awarding ceremony for the soldiers who had accomplished the first-ever Rank C mission would be taking place at the sector front. The commander had taken it upon himself to honour the heroes who brought hope back to the last lamplight of humanity. With the apocalypse in full swing, it was hard to make anything feel official, but the military managed, making it at least half as good as ceremonies from the old world.Jane watched the setup. To her, all these were mere formalities that could have been skipped—yet the constant, rapid tempo of her heartbeat said otherwise.Father… little Jane hasn’t let you down.Jane’s cheeks went wet as tears slipped down onto her fist, clenched tightly at her waist.“Is everything fine, Captain? A shadowy man appeared before the tavern’s entrance and pushed the door open. Inside, the place was packed with rowdy mercenaries and scrawny merchants. He wrinkled his nose, his face creasing."The stench of wild men and deadly wine…" He inhaled a little more until a satisfied expression settled on his face. "One feels alive in the midst of mortals, right?"The question didn’t seem directed at anyone but himself."Boss, we got your message. As of now, orders are already being sent out to begin the first phase," a lackey said, handing a mug to the man whose face seemed to treat shadows like clothing."How efficient. Now go get the papers I asked you to print."The shadowy man sat at a free table while the lackey stood by his side, not daring to look him in the eye, much less think of sharing a seat with him."Yes, Your Highness." The lackey immediately ran behind the counter to fetch them.A hefty, chubby mercenary walked up to the bar and slammed his mug down."More of those fiery co
