“Look! Mr. Sterling!” Someone pointed to the man in a well-fitted black suit marching with two hefty men at both sides.
Everyone turned in a hurry, silence taking charge at once. Charles Sterling was still in his early forties, but his position as the Manager of Prime Tech had made him one of the most powerful and influential men in Lakeville. It was rare to see him, and many CEOs had been anticipating to have a conversation with him, even if they didn’t end up being chosen as one of the lucky three for the Power line project. Many admired him for his charm, while some others loved his charisma. He moved like his feet didn’t touch the ground, each step getting faster then the other. “Oh, he is so handsome! He is a mini-god!” A lady drooled, stretching her neck and leaving her salivating mouth open. Charles had a stoic expression, proofing what people said about him not knowing how to smile. “What’s going on here?” He asked, his voice calm yet imperative. Ethan swallowed hard, picking his courage slowly. “Welcome, Mr. Sterling…” He bowed, and then he cleared his throat before he continued. “It’s just a little misunderstanding. But it’s nothing I cannot handle.” “Well, it doesn’t look like you are doing a good job handling it, Mr. Hall…” Charles snapped, snarling at the Event Manager. “I could hear the tumult from my office.” He grunted, turning to look at Brian and Arya, and then his eyes moved to Romeo. “Romeo…” He smiled, but that was only for a few seconds. Pearl gasped, nudging Romeo and looking into his eyes. “You were right! You guys know each other! He recognizes you!” “I told you…” Romeo raised his shoulders, his confidence increasing by a sevenfold. He stepped forward, pointing at Brian and Arya with disdain in his eyes. “I think you should send these two out of this place, Charles. Especially this lowlife here.” He pointed at Brian, his disgruntled look intact. “For the sake of the safety of the guests in here.” “Hmm.” Charles grumbled, and then he observed the accused with a narrowed gaze. Arya sighed heavily, and then she cleared her throat. “Hello, Mr. Sterling. My name is…” “I know who you are…” The Manager cut her short, giving her a stern look. Pearl sniggered from behind, never been satisfied by any other thing. “You are the Granddaughter of Don Pedro. The owner of Link Tech. your Grandfather must think so highly of you to think you stand a better chance at being awarded the contract over your brother.” Charles scoffed, making it hard to tell if he was complementing Arya or mocking her. “And you..” He shifted his gaze to Brian, looking him directly in the eyes. “What are you? What Company or business do you own?” “None…” Romeo answered before Brian could even stand a chance, his tone laced with mischief. “He used to work for me as my Chief Security guard, Charles. But I fired him a few days ago. For stealing and gross misconduct.” Pearl nodded from where she was standing, refusing to get rid of her sinister smile. Charles grunted, returning his eyes disdainful to Brian. He glowered at him, looking down with a condescending stare. “So you are a thief…” “He is not.” Arya spoke out, struggling to hide her annoyance. She growled inwardly, and then she sighed heavily in an attempt to get a grip on herself. “This is my husband, Mr. Sterling. And I can assure you, he is not a thief.” She insisted, looking the Manager in the eyes. “I have been made to believe that he is a common thief.” Charles retorted, eyes sparking with resentment. He turned to Brian and snorted, taking two steps forward. “If your husband is not a CEO or a business owner, then I think he is a thief.” His utterance was sharp and firm, his eyes still burning with contempt. “Only a thief would come to an event… uninvited.” Romeo and Pearl nodded, but Ethan shook his head. He inched closer to the Manager, and cautiously leaned to his right ear. “I think you are judging too quick, Mr. Sterling.” He whispered respectfully, yet Charles gave him an unfriendly look. “How dare you…” The Manager snarled, causing Ethan to swallow hard. “I am sorry…” The Event Manager apologized at once, and then he took two steps backward. When his eyes met with Arya’s, he mouthed an apology, wishing his hands were not tied. Arya’s heart sank deep into her stomach, and at that moment, she felt she had made a terrible mistake by bringing a total stranger along with her to that event. She took a deep breath, and then she cleared her throat in order to get rid of the clog that gripped her. “I promise you, Mr. Sterling. Brian is not a thief. He is my husband, and I can vouch for him.” Her tone was distraught, her eyes glowing with uncertainty as she waited to hear from the Manager. Charles gave Brian a brief look, and then he scoffed, returning his gaze to Arya. “If you say he is not a thief, Miss Kirk. Then prove it…”Latest Chapter
Admiration Withdrawn
“I am sorry. I can’t do that.” Winnie was quick to respond, then a snort followed.“I think you should leave, Mr. Regal. My boss is busy at the moment. He won’t be able to see you.”“But you just told me a while ago that he was less busy,” Brian argued, his face attacked by patches of frustration. “That was before I realized that he was too busy to see someone as unimportant as you.” Winnie didn’t hide her disdain. She looked at Brian like he was a piece of rag, glaring from the crown of his head, down to the sole of his shoes. It didn’t matter if he looked presentable or not, his name was a representation of failure and a man who had acted foolishly. Brian swallowed everything in good faith. After all, he was the one who brought everything upon himself. No one forced him to sell his company, not even to the highest bidder, but to the first person who offered to purchase it for a few million dollars. “I guess I deserve that.” He took a deep breath, yet his determination
Greeenfield Co
Brian stood in front of the tall building, both regret and annoyance simmering inside him. The company had been renamed from SilverLine Tech to Greenfield Co after he sold it in a desperate attempt to please his ex-wife. “All for nothing…” He muttered in despair, a heavy sigh escaping his lungs. Then he began to march toward the entrance, each step feeling heavier than the last. For some reason, the guards at the casement door didn’t stop him, probably because he was dressed differently- like a businessman or important personnel. They didn’t even recognize him, not even a glimpse of who he was. Brian continued moving slowly until he arrived at the reception. The young lady seated in front of the large screen was blowing hard on ballooned gum, biting hard even when she had sucked all the juice. Her fingers were clicking hard on the keyboard, but she had to stop when she saw Brian approaching. “Hello, Sir!” She said with a smile, her eyes flashing with pure admiration.
Sharp Mouth
“You have to believe it, Arya. I just did.” Brian held onto his smile, and then he took a deep breath.“But why?” Arya couldn’t let it go, the intense desire to know the truth. “Let’s just say that I have finally found a purpose.” “Oh…” Arya pretended to be satisfied by Brian’s response for the second time, nodding with a deadpan expression.“I am very sorry that you were not invited to the celebration. But I am grateful that you did a great job. I will send you the balance once I am settled.” Brian chuckled softly, causing Arya’s expression to drop. The lady was already asking why he was laughing with her eyes. “Don’t worry, Arya. You can give me the balance. At the party.”“You are coming?” Arya inquired with arched brows, staring even when Brian nodded.“Yes. And I will be coming with some flowers for my future wife.” “But…” “You don’t have to say anything, Arya.” Brian stopped her before she could continue with her slippery voice, still holding onto his confident
Uninvited
Arya shook her head frantically, but the truth was the truth. It was hanging in the air like their breath, soaring all around her.“He is a nobody, Grandpa. Brian is my husband, and getting this deal wouldn’t have been possible without him.” “No…” Don Pedro retorted with a cold tone, pupils contrasted in annoyance.“You will bring no shame to the Kirk family, child…” He took a deep breath, then he breathed annoyance. “This…” He pointed at Brian, in search of the right noun to use. “This leech will certainly not be my grandson-in-law. You had better divorce him now that it is early.” “I agree…” Travis nodded, smiling as though he was going to get a reward for it. “I am sure that he would want to reap where he did not sow. That’s what wretched men like him do.” Brian slowly pulled down his right hand, returning it to his side.He inhaled sharply, ignoring Travis and turning to the old man. “I think you are mistaken, Mr. Kirk. I am not a nobody, I am…”“I don’t care.”
The Kirks
“Who are you talking about?” Brian asked with a soft tone, but when he realized that he wasn’t going to get a response by just asking, he decided to turn toward the same direction Arya was looking. He saw them. An old man probably in his early seventies, a young man in his early thirties, and six bodyguards who were bouncing behind them. The two men in front were dressed in the same tuxedos, looking like the old and young versions of each other. From the way people stared and pointed, Brian could already tell who they were. “Let me guess…” He slowly returned his gaze to Arya, catching sight of the worry on her face.“That’s your Grandpa, and your brother.”“You guessed right.” Arya let out a heavy sigh, yet she couldn’t attain relief.“I wonder what they are doing here, Brian. It’s been barely thirty minutes since the close of the event.” Arya kept on staring, but she couldn’t look either of the two men in the eyes. She looked above them, but that didn’t look like it was
The Response
“Hello.” Arya waved at the couple, a smirk plastered across her face. Pearl snorted, disgruntlement etched on her face. “Have you come to make fun of us?”“No! Not at all!” Arya shook her head, yet she refused to discard her wry smile. “Why would I do such a thing?” She asked silently, moving her eyes from Pearl to Romeo, and back to Pearl. “As a matter of fact, I have come to sympathize with both of you. Not every day do we get to see people get so disappointed and yet stand courageous like you.” She tutted continuously, shaking her head with a palpable sneer. Her words stung the couple as though a hive of bees had attacked them, their temper rising as they scowled at her. “What did you do to make Mr. Adkins put your name on the list?” Romeo asked, but Pearl interrupted before Arya could decide if she was going to respond or not. “Did you sleep with him?” Her voice was cold, her glaring eyes demanding an immediate response, refusing to even blink. Arya scoffed, and
