The Thief

“You are insane!” Pearl fired, pointing Brian to the face.

The only reason why she didn’t go any further was because of the crowd.

Their argument had already drawn more attention after the unsettling revelation.

She managed to get a grip on herself, and then she exhaled sharply before she spoke with a low tone.

“You have a wife now, Brian. Why don’t you just sign the freaking papers and we will never have to see each other again?”

She waited, but Brian was taking his time to speak.

Then he cleared his throat and muttered;

“What’s the fun in that? The answer still remains no, Pearl.”

“You bastard!” Pearl advanced toward him, but Arya stepped in the way, ready to push her.

“Don’t you dare call my husband names. If he says he is not giving you a divorce, then that’s it.”

Pearl gasped, turning to Romeo at once.

“Did you hear that?” She demanded his intervention, but he was too dumbstruck to even say a word.

Pearl was forced to return her gaze to Brian, her chest rising and falling aggressively.

“I will take you to court, Brian. I hope your new wife here has enough money to spare for you to be able to afford a good attorney.”

“Good luck with that.” Brian retorted, and then he turned to Arya.

“It’s almost time, Love. I think we should start heading in for the event.”

“Right…” Arya nodded, grabbing Brian’s hand at once.

They both walked away, Arya brushing Pearl aside on her way forward.

“You bitch!” Pearl cursed, grinding her teeth as she glowered at them.

She swallowed hard, hoping her tight chest was going to regain its composure.

“Do you think she stands a chance?” She asked her partner, not certain she was ready for the answer.

“Definitely not…” Romeo reassured, but the vigor in his tone was lost.

He cleared his throat, then he adjusted his blue tie.

“You have nothing to worry about, Pearl. That deal is yours, you have the upper hand.”

Pearl’s confidence returned at once, along with her smile.

She adjusted her dress, and then she sighed heavily.

“Let’s go then. I can’t wait to rub it on their faces when City Global is announced as the second company to receive the company after Apex Holdings.”

“You bet…” Romeo chuckled, and then he grabbed her by the waist.

They made their way into the building as well, being among the few that marched in before the doors were finally closed.

The event was about to begin, the hall filled with luxury and style.

Beauty and sophistication was the order of the day, champagne flutes being passed by the sommeliers there to attend to the guests.

Sweet soft music reverberated from the stage where the live orchestra performed, the chandelier adding to the scintillation of the moonlight on the surface of the banquet tables and the marble tiles.

Everyone stood out. No one wanted to be left out.

A few of the guests were lined up at the red carpet, waiting to be ushered to prepared their tables.

Brian and Arya were on the queue, with just three sets left before it got to their turn.

“Don’t let them in!” Someone bellowed from the back, causing some of the guests to look back.

It was Romeo, and as he hurried with Pearl by his side, he was pointing at Brian.

“He is not supposed to be in this building! He has no right to be here!” He insisted, increasing his pace.

The guests were confused, including the guards.

The event Manager was bemused as well, staring with wide eyes.

“Mr. Jones?” He demanded an immediate explanation with his eyes, staring as Romeo drew closer.

“Yes. It’s me…” Romeo was glad that his popularity had lengthened to that event, his confidence level rose rapidly.

“Don’t make the mistake of letting these two into this event. Especially that pauper right there.” He pointed at Brian, still flashing glares of disdain at him.

“You are definitely going to get into so much trouble for letting him in, Mr. Hall. You don’t want to deal with someone stealing the belongings of the guests here.”

“He is right…” Pearl chipped in at once, rolling her eyes at Brian.

“He is a thief! Hs is not meant to be here.” She added, rolling her evil eyes at Brian.

The event Manager, Ethan Hall was confused, looking at Brian carefully.

There was nothing that suggested that he was a thief, yet he couldn’t prove otherwise.

“Miss Kirk…” He whispered, turning to Arya.

“Is this your business partner or your employee?”

“He is my husband.” Arya gave a quick response, and then she took a deep breath.

“Don’t listen to anything they are saying, Mr. Hall. Brian is not a thief, they are just trying to stir up unnecessary panic.”

The middle-aged man nodded, yet he was unconvinced.

He returned his gaze to Romeo, and then he cleared his throat.

“I am sure there is a mix-up somewhere, Mr. Jones. They must have presented their invite to the guards at the entrance. And I can see them on the list.” He looked at the screen of the tablet he was holding just to be sure.

Romeo grunted, still insistent on accomplishing his mission.

“You may choose to believe me or not, Mr. Hall. But I don’t think you would want to lose your job because you didn’t listen to me. What would the Manager of Prime Tech say if he finds out that you let a common criminal into such a global event where notable CEOs and Businessmen and women are gathered?”

“He is right? Don’t make that mistake.” Pearl warned, looking Ethan in the eyes.

She turned to Brian, and after rolling her eyes at him, she returned her gaze to Ethan and spoke with a very audible tone, making sure everyone at a close range heard him.

“I think you should warn everyone here to hold tightly to their wallets, their purses and their phones. Brian is a poacher, and a smooth one at that.”

Murmuring erupted from across the hall, some of the guests especially the females heeding to the warning at once.

They grabbed their purses in a hurry, and while some held onto them closely, others handed them over to the men next to them.

Everyone became wary of Brian, glaring at him with a growing resentment.

“Get that thief out of here!” A lady sparked, pushing herself up from her seat and pointing angrily.

A good number of the guests followed, their voices demanding Brian’s immediate exit from the hall.

Arya became worried, but when she turned to Brian, she could see that his expression was devoid of any form of panic.

It was as if he had everything under control, but there was nothing to prove it.

The commotion became so loud that it soon forced the Manager to come out.

He was seen marching toward the scene with two bodyguards next to him.

  • Admiration Withdrawn

“I am sorry. I can’t do that.” Winnie was quick to respond, then a snort followed.“I think you should leave, Mr. Regal. My boss is busy at the moment. He won’t be able to see you.”“But you just told me a while ago that he was less busy,” Brian argued, his face attacked by patches of frustration. “That was before I realized that he was too busy to see someone as unimportant as you.” Winnie didn’t hide her disdain. She looked at Brian like he was a piece of rag, glaring from the crown of his head, down to the sole of his shoes. It didn’t matter if he looked presentable or not, his name was a representation of failure and a man who had acted foolishly. Brian swallowed everything in good faith. After all, he was the one who brought everything upon himself. No one forced him to sell his company, not even to the highest bidder, but to the first person who offered to purchase it for a few million dollars. “I guess I deserve that.” He took a deep breath, yet his determination

  • Greeenfield Co

Brian stood in front of the tall building, both regret and annoyance simmering inside him. The company had been renamed from SilverLine Tech to Greenfield Co after he sold it in a desperate attempt to please his ex-wife. “All for nothing…” He muttered in despair, a heavy sigh escaping his lungs. Then he began to march toward the entrance, each step feeling heavier than the last. For some reason, the guards at the casement door didn’t stop him, probably because he was dressed differently- like a businessman or important personnel. They didn’t even recognize him, not even a glimpse of who he was. Brian continued moving slowly until he arrived at the reception. The young lady seated in front of the large screen was blowing hard on ballooned gum, biting hard even when she had sucked all the juice. Her fingers were clicking hard on the keyboard, but she had to stop when she saw Brian approaching. “Hello, Sir!” She said with a smile, her eyes flashing with pure admiration.

  • Sharp Mouth

“You have to believe it, Arya. I just did.” Brian held onto his smile, and then he took a deep breath.“But why?” Arya couldn’t let it go, the intense desire to know the truth. “Let’s just say that I have finally found a purpose.” “Oh…” Arya pretended to be satisfied by Brian’s response for the second time, nodding with a deadpan expression.“I am very sorry that you were not invited to the celebration. But I am grateful that you did a great job. I will send you the balance once I am settled.” Brian chuckled softly, causing Arya’s expression to drop. The lady was already asking why he was laughing with her eyes. “Don’t worry, Arya. You can give me the balance. At the party.”“You are coming?” Arya inquired with arched brows, staring even when Brian nodded.“Yes. And I will be coming with some flowers for my future wife.” “But…” “You don’t have to say anything, Arya.” Brian stopped her before she could continue with her slippery voice, still holding onto his confident

  • Uninvited

Arya shook her head frantically, but the truth was the truth. It was hanging in the air like their breath, soaring all around her.“He is a nobody, Grandpa. Brian is my husband, and getting this deal wouldn’t have been possible without him.” “No…” Don Pedro retorted with a cold tone, pupils contrasted in annoyance.“You will bring no shame to the Kirk family, child…” He took a deep breath, then he breathed annoyance. “This…” He pointed at Brian, in search of the right noun to use. “This leech will certainly not be my grandson-in-law. You had better divorce him now that it is early.” “I agree…” Travis nodded, smiling as though he was going to get a reward for it. “I am sure that he would want to reap where he did not sow. That’s what wretched men like him do.” Brian slowly pulled down his right hand, returning it to his side.He inhaled sharply, ignoring Travis and turning to the old man. “I think you are mistaken, Mr. Kirk. I am not a nobody, I am…”“I don’t care.”

  • The Kirks

“Who are you talking about?” Brian asked with a soft tone, but when he realized that he wasn’t going to get a response by just asking, he decided to turn toward the same direction Arya was looking. He saw them. An old man probably in his early seventies, a young man in his early thirties, and six bodyguards who were bouncing behind them. The two men in front were dressed in the same tuxedos, looking like the old and young versions of each other. From the way people stared and pointed, Brian could already tell who they were. “Let me guess…” He slowly returned his gaze to Arya, catching sight of the worry on her face.“That’s your Grandpa, and your brother.”“You guessed right.” Arya let out a heavy sigh, yet she couldn’t attain relief.“I wonder what they are doing here, Brian. It’s been barely thirty minutes since the close of the event.” Arya kept on staring, but she couldn’t look either of the two men in the eyes. She looked above them, but that didn’t look like it was

  • The Response

“Hello.” Arya waved at the couple, a smirk plastered across her face. Pearl snorted, disgruntlement etched on her face. “Have you come to make fun of us?”“No! Not at all!” Arya shook her head, yet she refused to discard her wry smile. “Why would I do such a thing?” She asked silently, moving her eyes from Pearl to Romeo, and back to Pearl. “As a matter of fact, I have come to sympathize with both of you. Not every day do we get to see people get so disappointed and yet stand courageous like you.” She tutted continuously, shaking her head with a palpable sneer. Her words stung the couple as though a hive of bees had attacked them, their temper rising as they scowled at her. “What did you do to make Mr. Adkins put your name on the list?” Romeo asked, but Pearl interrupted before Arya could decide if she was going to respond or not. “Did you sleep with him?” Her voice was cold, her glaring eyes demanding an immediate response, refusing to even blink. Arya scoffed, and
