Daniel leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees as he stared intently at the glowing, encrypted smart terminal Liam had placed between them.

"So let me get this straight," Daniel murmured, his eyes moving over the alphanumeric data strings.

"The Assassin you knocked down, he explicitly used the name Aldridge Maratain but refused to mention it further while Victor interrogated him?"

"Yes," Liam rasped, sitting back in the leather chair, his large, veined hands locked together.

"The Driver said the funds meant to wipe out the survivors were routed from a proxy account carrying that exact name."

"Aldridge..." Daniel repeated the word, a low whistle escaping his teeth. He shook his head, his brow furrowing deeply behind his glasses.

"Liam, that's a massive problem. Victor Aldridge is the senior board member who just stood by you downstairs during the shootout"

"He shares the surname, Daniel," Liam stated, his deep charcoal-grey eye turning completely unreadable and cold. "It’s too specific to be a random coincidence. A multi-trillion-dollar maritime shipping annex doesn't just happen to share the last name of the most powerful senior director on the Cross Group board."

"But are you absolutely certain it's him?" Daniel asked, his voice dropping into a tense, hushed whisper as he leaned closer.

"Could someone else on the board be using Victor’s name as a shield? Setting him up to take the fall if the succession plot blew up in their faces?"

"I am not certain of anything yet," Liam replied, his voice dropping into a freezing register that made the room feel instantly silent.

"I don't have the explicit banking records or the physical wire signatures to lock him to the trigger. Victor’s fatherly warmth and grandfatherly mask look entirely flawless.

If I hadn't heard the word Maratain drip from that mercenary's bloody mouth, I would have trusted him with my life. But in this house, a matching name is a burning match. I cannot ignore it."

Daniel wiped his palms against his denim trousers, a tense, defensive line stiffening his shoulders.

"If Victor is the wolf behind the curtain, he’s a psychopath. He was smiling right at your face while his proxy accounts were funding the very security detail that tried to put a bullet in your head."

"And that is exactly why we move with absolute silence," Liam whispered, his fingers tracking the edge of the mahogany desk. "Gerald Holt himself told me to look at every human being in this city as a moving contract that can be canceled with a single stroke of a pen.

He explicitly told me that everyone in high society carries a hidden debt or a secret assignment. Then he looked me dead in the eye and said, 'Do not even trust me, Mr. Cross.'"

"Gerald said that about himself?" Daniel’s eyes expanded in raw shock. "The chief executor—the guy who literally controls your grandfather’s sovereign vault—told you to watch your back around him?"

"He did," Liam rasped, a chilling, hollow focus taking root in his soul. "Everyone has their own secrets, Daniel. Gerald has his, and Victor has his bloodlines. Which means I cannot use a single internal corporate lawyer from the Cross Group infrastructure to secure my grandfather’s legal assets.

Every attorney inside those glass towers has been vetted, bought, or influenced by the board's existing factions for over twenty years. If I bring them into this estate to draft my defensive framework, my strategies will leak to the traitors before the ink even dries on the parchment."

Daniel stood up, pacing before stopping rigidly beside Liam's right shoulder. "You're right. You need an outsider. A clean slate who doesn't even know what the inside of a Cross boardroom looks like."

"I need an independent executioner, Daniel," Liam commanded, his voice ringing with an unearthly, absolute dominance that made his friend rigidly stand at attention.

"A legendary, sharp personal lawyer who operates completely outside the high-society syndicates. A professional weapon who has a reputation for destroying corporate cases that should have been completely unwinnable. Someone who cannot be bought, cannot be blackmailed, and cannot be intimidated by a board block."

"Consider it done," Daniel stated fiercely, his face hardening with pure, unyielding loyalty. "I will completely bypass the standard Manhattan agencies and the corporate registries. I'll tap into the high-end independent legal databases immediately and screen every top-tier litigator in the state who has zero financial ties to the board. I will bring their files directly to this suite before the next succession briefing."

"Good," Liam murmured, his jaw clenching as his icy eye fixed back onto the rain-slicked New York skyline outside his velvet curtains.

"But make sure of one specific requirement, brother. I don't want a traditional boardroom academic. I prefer a female attorney. Someone whose professional walls are completely unyielding, and who looks at the law as a cold weapon for absolute retribution."

Daniel nodded rigidly, "I will find her, Liam. Don't worry about the database trail. Rest your ribs and let the medical tracking settle. By seven a.m., your legal weapon will be standing in this room."

"Find her, Daniel," Liam whispered into the dark.

"I'll give you the best, brother”

The heavy oak doors clicked shut as Daniel exited the quarters, leaving Liam entirely alone. The silence of the mansion grew thicker, pressing against his temples like a heavy weight.

Liam walked slowly toward the grand mahogany wardrobe, his large, veined hand reaching into his pocket. His fingers gently wrapped around a tiny, faded object. He brought it out into the dim light of the desk lamp.

It was Lily’s small, yellow sunflower hair clip—the only piece of his daughter he had left after the Vanes had stripped his world to the bone.

He stared at the tiny plastic petals, his chest rising and falling in a tight, heavy rhythm. The memory of her soft, chubby cheeks and her innocent, dimpled smile flashed through his mind, instantly followed by the terrifying, chilling image of her blue, lifeless body at the bottom of the swimming pool.

The grief inside his chest didn't make him weep. It didn't make him shake. It transformed instantly into a roaring, freezing furnace of pure, unadulterated vengeance that consumed his broad shoulders.

The heavy mahogany doors of the study slid back with a precise, muted hiss, instantly severing the electric stillness that had settled between the desk and the leather chair.Serena did not flinch or pull her hand away with a guilty jerk. She slowly, deliberately lowered Liam’s scarred hand back onto the polished wood, her fingers brushing the rough edges of his knuckles one last time before she stepped back into the shadows of the high bookshelves. Her face was perfectly composed, but her amber eyes remained fixed on Liam as she reclaimed her legal ledger.Gerald Holt strode into the circular glow of the desk lamp. His silver hair was brushed to a razor-sharp edge, and his dark suit jacket was buttoned tightly across his commanding chest. He carried a heavy, encrypted tablet under his arm, stopping exactly three feet from the table with his hands locked firmly behind his back."Mr. Cross," Gerald stated, his voice a freezing, authoritative slab

  • The Border of the Skin

The green desk lamp hummed softly, casting a low, circular glow over the mountain of corporate ledgers on the mahogany table. It was past midnight. The rest of the Manhattan townhouse was entirely dark, but inside the private study, the only sound was the sharp, periodic scratching of Serena's stylus against her digital pad.Beyond the tall windows, Manhattan glittered beneath the night sky. Headlights moved along the distant streets like thin streams of light, while the occasional siren rose from somewhere below before disappearing into the city's restless silence. The townhouse itself remained undisturbed, its corridors empty and its security systems operating quietly behind the walls.Inside the study, however, the atmosphere felt anything but peaceful.A half-empty glass of water sat beside Liam's laptop. Several financial reports had been pushed aside, their pages marked with handwritten notes and figures. Liam sat perfectly still in the hig

The heavy glass doors of the southern terrace stood slightly open, letting in the faint, distant hum of the city below. The paperwork on the low coffee table had already been stacked, leaving the room quiet and clear of the usual legal clutter.Liam sat back on the leather sofa, a glass of water resting untouched between his fingers. He looked at Serena, who was slowly arranging the leather straps of her briefcase near the door."You don't call New Jersey," Liam said.Serena stopped, her thumb resting against the brass buckle of her bag. She didn't turn around immediately. "The filing is complete, Mr. Cross. There is no need to check the regional registries until Monday morning.""I am not talking about the filing, Serena," Liam said, his voice quiet. "I am talking about your family. You never look at your phone when the corporate lines go dead. You don't call your mother."Serena turned slowly, her shoulder dropping as she leaned against

The ninety-million-dollar high-interest bridge loan from Atlantic Union has been fully absorbed into our private reserve."He swiped through the confirmation screens, checking the figures one final time. Every transaction had been processed, every authorization verified, and every digital signature secured. The operation had taken weeks of careful coordination, but the final result was exactly what they wanted. There was no reason to celebrate yet, though. Not until Raymond Vane realized that the financial foundation he had spent years building was no longer under his control.Liam Cross didn't move his gaze from the floor-to-ceiling windows. The Eurocopter dropped out of the grey New York sky like a stone, its rotors screaming against the wind as the pilot slammed the craft down onto the estate’s reinforced pad. Daniel Park scrambled out behind him, his fingers already working his encrypted handheld device to trace the dead communication lines."The server core in the basement is back online, Liam," Daniel rasped, his face tight as they hurried across the rooftop toward the private elevator. "Serena’s local network was temporarily blinded by an active software purge. The internal security feed is tracking Gerald Holt down in the subterranean garage annex right now."The elevator dropped through the floors with a mechanical hiss, stopping at the lowest concrete level.
