Outside, it was raining heavily, and the breeze blew intensely from all angles. Elion was in the middle of it, running down the road like a madman, his body drenched in rain and his lungs aching from stress.

The distance from the hospital to his stepfather’s house was far, but somehow Elion wasn’t seeing that as stressful as it should have been. He knew one thing for sure, which was making sure he reached his destination.

Soon after a long run that lasted forever, Elion reached his stepfather’s house. He was still drenched in rain, but he drove himself forward, and just as he was about to open the door, he heard the sound of a loud, stroking slap, followed by a loud shout from his sister Clara; it sounded like the impact of the slap sent her crashing to the ground.

Elion’s anger flared. He knew this was definitely his stepfather again, maltreating his sister as usual, and he wouldn’t be able to let something such as this slide anymore. He was determined for one thing: either his stepfather would kill him this night, or he would kill him.

“I will kill you…” Elion gritted his teeth as he spoke through them. He banged hard on the door and tried to force his way in, but the door was shut.

More sounds of beating continued coming from inside, and Clara’s voice increased even more.

“You thought because your mother is dead, therefore you won’t do as I asked, you brat?” James’s voice thundered with rage.

“Let my sister go, you bastard!” Elion’s voice thundered as well as he tried to break his way through. But still, he couldn’t.

The rain falling outside had somehow silenced Elion’s voice, so James, his stepfather, wasn’t able to hear the door banging hard. When James finally noticed, he went to the door, and before opening it, he mumbled in annoyance. “Don’t tell me it’s that brat again. I thought he would have died alongside the shadow realm; can’t believe he made it through.”

James narrowed his eyes as he said these words. Elion was a pain to him, and he wanted him to be as good as dead.

To taunt him even further, James began to mock Elion. “Why are you here? Didn’t your dead mother tell you that you ain’t allowed here? And if you think you are here to take your sister, then sorry to spoil the fun for you, but I won’t allow you. She will work for me just like a servant and in return I will feed her like the dog she is. As for you, I don’t give a damn if you die of starvation.”

Elion’s fist clenched even more as he slammed hard on the door. “Open up the goddamn door, you bastard!”

Almost immediately as Elion thundered these words, Clara cried out, reaching out to James’s legs and begging him not to harm Elion because she knew Elion was no match for him; it had happened countless times that he swelled Elion’s face when Elion tried to be stubborn toward him.

James kicked Clara’s face, and blood splattered. From Elion’s end, it was as though everything around him became slow, and he could hear even a drop of water that touched the ground.

And in those moments, a voice ran through Elion’s mind—dark, deep, and filled with anger.

“Let me in…”

The voice sounded once, but in the echo from within, it seemed like an endless sound, reality itself in unison.

Elion could feel like his body was sinking down an ocean, and just then, he let his mind open for whatever the voice was that had called out to him to let him in.

And in a split second, Elion’s eyes shot open. This time, it wasn’t the Elion we all knew. It was something dark; a dark liquid, no different from a shadow, seeped out from his body, and in one blast, the door which stood before him shattered into pieces.

The wave and impact sent James, who was standing in front of the door, crashing to the wall.

Facing forward, James saw a dark figure. Lightning scattered around the sky, and even with the glow, he still couldn’t see what the creature staring at the entrance of the door was. It had dark long claws; it was dark just like a shadow but in the appearance of a human body. Its eyes glowed intense red, and from within his mouth, a sneer gently carved—one that made James quiver in fear.

Within his mouth was a glowing hue, as though a red light was being placed inside, and his eyes were no different.

By this time, Clara had passed out from the kick from James, meaning she was unconscious throughout everything that had happened.

“What are you?” James asked, his lips trembling.

The figure before him grunted, and in the next seconds, James felt both his hands gripped by black hands, as though they had come from the wall. The hands were inhuman; it was like hundreds of hands gripping tight to his wrists. Soon, he was being lifted up, floating mid-air.

James trembled; he began to beg vigorously. “Please, I beg you, don’t kill me, please…”

Before James could utter another word, his arms were pulled clean from his shoulders. His cries erupted like thunder blasting from the sky.

His body fell to the ground, blood dripping from his severed arms. And in that instant, he passed out.

A car stopped by the road. For about twenty minutes, watching all that was happening inside was Muzan, the superior who was in charge of the chamber. He had followed behind Elion, not only to lend him assistance but to observe him, and what he just witnessed sent a chill far down his spine.

“What the hell just happened…” Muzan’s voice sounded in deep surprise. He didn’t see how James’s hands were severed yet; he only heard the scorching cries from inside the house, and the only thing he could see was Elion standing in front of the door, drenched in rain. Not only that, Muzan sensed a kind of strong energy coming from the kid—something he had never felt.

Each gate that had opened is graded, and within these gates are their own type of monsters. Almost all these strong hunters who had fought countless monsters could sense a very strong one if it was close, and among all the monsters Muzan had faced so far, he had never felt a kind of aura and energy as strong as the one coming from Elion.

  • Pain And Grief

Elion stared at Muzan and Muzan stared back. He was trying his possible best to contain himself, and when he did, he smiled gently at the boy before suddenly frowning. “Sorry kid, we can’t accept you into the Hunters Academy. If you had awakened your core and as well have an attribute, then you would have had the chance of partaking in the process of becoming a Hunter.”Elion’s eyes widened in disbelief after hearing this. He was more terrified compared to the devil being he just saw. The bird mark on his chest didn’t fade out, thus it didn’t make any difference. If the spell didn’t kill him at thirteen when he was supposed to, then what makes it become something that will kill him now that he’s sixteen?Elion leaned forward, his eyes welling up in tears as he tried to speak. “Please sir, this has always been my dream. I want to become a Hunter. I want to help fight those monsters that have been the cause of my father’s death and as well protect the city.”Tears dropped down from Elio

  • Something Different

This entire scene left the woman perplexed; she stared at Elion from the outside with disbelief before shifting her gaze to the screen before her. There was a specific thing that was certain: for one to be able to survive the Dream Piercer device, they must be able to awaken an attribute, even if it is a weak one, and that will be detected by the machine. But in the case of Elion, it prompted something different—a kind of error the woman had never seen in her days of work. She urged Elion to remove his hand and place it on the glass again. “Please remove your hand and replace it back on the glass again.”When Elion did as she had asked, the same error showed as before, but this time it added another error message:[Attribute not detected]The woman saw this as something that wasn’t supposed to be possible, and so she gestured for her colleagues to come over so they could see the situation for themselves. When they did—about four of them—they were stunned as well.“How is this possible

  • Unable To Detect Attribute

A man was standing in front of the incubator device as Jordan opened his eyes, and after confirming he was still alive, the man spoke. “Well done boy, you did a good job. Proceed to the attribute section where you will be tested and the choice to join the hunter academy will be given to you.”After the man said this, he stepped forward and helped Elion out from the incubation dream piercer.Elion walked to the section he was directed to go, and along the path, he was the only one walking. Different dream piercer machines stood side by side, at his end, already open, and this startled him, meaning he is the last to wake up of the dream piercer machines. He could have died, but somehow he survived. There is a specific time fixed on the device, that if one couldn’t wake up within that frame, he or she will be proclaimed dead, but somehow Elion did the impossible; he woke up after about twenty minutes of the time which ideally was fixed for all dreamers to wake up.The soldier who had ope

  • Awakener Stone

Over the years, this was the very first time she had seen the awakening stone turn black. And just then, Elion was finally able to pull his hand out of the stone; thereafter, he stumbled and fell to the ground, and the moment he did, the stone regained its glowing texture and gradually began to shine again.Elion was on the ground. Even he didn’t understand what had happened. The only thing he could remember was his hands being drawn to the stone like magnets.Aurora flew towards Elion, staring at him in wonder. “What happened when you touched the stone?”Elion wished he could answer that question, but he had nothing to say. Additionally, Elion seemed not to awaken anything when he touched the stone.Aurora gazed down at Elion’s chest and noticed that his core was still dormant.“It’s as though he’s sucking in the energy of the awakening stone…” she thought deeply as she stared at him.The awakening stone was meant for one thing: interconnection. The energy of the awakener would be dr

  • Awakener Stone

After shaking hands with Elion, she gestured for him to follow.“Come, let me take you to the Awakening Chamber where the Awakening Stone is, before time runs out.”The Awakening Chamber, located inside the castle, was a vast space where awakeners gathered to have their cores awakened. All they had to do was touch a diamond, and there their core would be awakened. With a sign of a bright light from their chest. Elion and Jessica, the elf lady, made their way inside the castle. There were many awakeners—teenagers who had just awakened their cores, each with a chest glowing a bright, almost blinding light, which meant their awakening had been successful. They would all gather to be sent back to their bodies in the real world. After the awakening was completed, each person had to choose: serve the city by becoming a hunter to protect it, or live a normal life. Most people decided to become hunters. Thereafter, they would process through an academy for a few years before becoming fully f
