Chapter 3 : Chosen by the double-edged heirloom sword

Arthur had arrived home. He was panting, his body completely exhausted. The distance from work to his home was quite far, and he hadn’t had a chance to rest yet. Perhaps if he weren’t overweight, he wouldn’t be so exhausted. He had done work far more exhausting than today’s.

Emely, the elderly woman, walked toward Arthur with a worried expression. Even though her son had always been indifferent toward her, seeing him like that filled her with worry.

Arthur gave his mother a faint smile; he didn’t want to worry her. Slowly, he began to catch his breath.

'She’s my mother now; it’s my duty to take care of her. This woman is actually very kind—she killed her son out of desperation. Even after killing her son, she immediately turned herself in to the authorities.'

Emely stopped in her tracks; her son surely didn’t want her to approach him, especially since she couldn’t help with the debt problem.

Emely decided to go to the kitchen; surely what her son wanted was some good food to take his mind off his troubles. She hurried to the kitchen to fetch the meal she had just cooked. Arthur, watching his mother leave, felt a little disappointed; he had hoped she would ask how he was doing.

“Is she already disappointed because of that debt problem?” Arthur muttered, staring at Emely’s back.

Emely returned carrying a whole roasted chicken and some roasted beef, along with two fried fish—the meal looked tempting.

Every day, Emely worked as a waitress in the neighboring town. She always spent her entire paycheck on groceries. If there was no meat, her son would surely get angry and hit her. Meanwhile, she herself only ate vegetables or the leftovers her son had eaten.

Arthur was stunned when he saw Emely bring in so much food. It was all meat—no vegetables at all! No wonder he’d gotten so fat. Now he had to avoid that food; otherwise, he’d never lose weight.

Emely looked at her son. She found it strange that he didn’t eat right away, even though she’d already set the food out on the dining table.

“Mom, I don’t think I can eat all of this right now. I just want to eat vegetables. Now that I’ve gotten a job, with this overweight body of mine, I’ll get tired easily.”

Emely almost burst into tears when she heard her son’s words. After so long, her son was finally speaking politely to her again. Had her son changed?

‘He must be really shocked right now.’

Arthur approached Emely; even though he’d never actually done anything wrong, he still had to apologize to her. Now that he was trapped in this body, he couldn’t just change back and risk people giving him strange looks.

“Mom, I’m sorry for all my mistakes. I don’t want to lose you—I regret always causing you trouble all this time,” Arthur said, holding Emely’s hands tightly.

Emely cried and immediately hugged her son.

“Don’t cry, Mom. I’ve also found a job now. I’ve even received my first paycheck because I succeeded in their challenge.” Arthur pulled five gold coins out of his pocket.

Emely stared at her son in disbelief. What kind of job had her son gotten? Five gold coins was, of course, a huge amount for them. The debt was only two gold coins, after all.

“I can pay off that debt, and the rest is for you,” Arthur said with a smile.

“What kind of job did you get, Arthur?” Emely asked.

Just as Arthur was about to answer, several people smashed down the front door. They immediately barged into the house.

Arthur immediately shielded his mother behind his back. He didn’t know why they had come—could they be robbers?

“Hand over all your money, or you’ll die!”

Arthur stared at them with an inscrutable expression. This all seemed strange—they were robbing such a modest home, which meant they weren’t ordinary robbers. Or perhaps they’d been targeting him from the start, knowing he’d just received his paycheck.

The badges on their uniforms looked familiar. Even though they were wearing face coverings, he still recognized the symbol—it was the same as the one worn by the debt collectors from the Demon Sect.

Something seemed off about that cult—they were deliberately trying to make him default on his debt. That meant what they wanted wasn’t money, but human organs that would allow them to make a huge profit. He wouldn’t let them take his gold coins.

Arthur threw the plate and the roasted chicken at them. But the men easily smashed them to pieces. The shards of glass cut Arthur’s arm, causing Emely to scream hysterically.

“We don’t have anything! Please don’t hurt us,” Emely shouted.

They looked angry and tried to snatch the gold coins from Arthur’s pocket. But of course, Arthur wouldn’t let them take his money—he’d worked hard to earn those gold coins. Even if his own life was at stake!

A light appeared, just like the first time he’d seen it.

Without hesitation, Arthur immediately pressed the Yes button to get help.

Shortly afterward, time returned to normal. They were about to attack again, but law enforcement officers suddenly arrived and immediately stopped them. Of course, the attackers were no match for the officers. The law enforcement officers immediately arrested them and took them away.
