Chapter 3: Fashion Crimes and Celestial Enforcers

"Get inside, you beautiful, loud disaster!" Aether hissed, using his free right hand to shove Dorian through the boutique’s heavy glass side door.

"Watch the silk, you brute!" Dorian shrieked, though he quickly lowered his voice to a scandalized whisper as they tumbled into the plush, carpeted foyer. "Do you have any idea how much this vest costs? More than your mortal soul, I assure you."

"My soul is divine, Dorian, and currently very bruised," Aether grumbled, pulling Calista in behind him. The heavy door clicked shut, instantly cutting off the bustling noise of the mortal street. "So forgive me if I don't care about your boutique's dress code."

"He is right, Dorian. Keep your voice down," Calista said, her eyes already scanning the lavishly decorated showroom. High-end gowns and sleek, modern suits lined the walls, illuminated by soft, glowing crystal chandeliers. "If the enforcers trace the magical residue to this shop, your precious boutique will become a crime scene."

"A crime scene? Please. My store is a sanctuary of high fashion, not a police precinct," Dorian huffed, aggressively dusting off his sleeves. "Though, looking at you two, a crime has definitely been committed. That trench coat belongs in an incinerator, not on my imported silk carpet."

"We're working with what we have," Aether said, leaning heavily against a marble display stand. A sudden wave of dizziness washed over him, making his vision blur for a second. "Which is currently nothing. No core, no magic, and a partner who keeps trying to amputate my left arm."

"It was a tactical suggestion," Calista countered, her silver eyes narrowing as she monitored the front windows. "And it remains a highly viable option if we cannot find a key."

"You are savages. Both of you," Dorian sighed, waving a manicured hand. "Now, stand still while I think of a way to disguise this... this utter tragedy. I cannot have my high-profile clients seeing you looking like refugees from a discount clothing bin."

Suddenly, Calista stiffened. Her grip on Aether’s wrist tightened so hard his bones popped.

"Ow! Calista, gentle! The bones, remember?" Aether wheezed.

"Aether," she whispered, her voice dropping to a barely audible, icy thread. "Do not move. Do not even breathe."

"What? Did you spot a nicer coat? Because honestly, anything is—"

"Look at the evening wear section," she cut him off, her body completely rigid. "By the velvet mannequins."

Aether slowly peered through the gaps in a row of designer dresses. His stomach dropped. Standing near a display of tailored suits was a tall, sharply dressed man with a severe expression and short, dark hair. He was holding a sleek, silver runic device that hummed with a low, rhythmic pulse.

"Oh, great," Aether groaned, burying his face in the collar of the dusty trench coat. "The resident fun-killer. What is Evren Satyanegara doing here? Does he need a new tailored suit to go with his permanent scowl?"

"He's tracking the anomaly," Calista whispered, her silver eyes darting around the room. "If his detector picks up our signatures, we are done. I cannot be arrested by a junior enforcer. The administrative paperwork alone would take decades."

"Priorities, Calista," Aether sighed. "But yes, more importantly, he'd drag me back to the High Court, and I am not in the mood to be publicly executed today."

"Dorian," Calista hissed, turning her head slightly toward the designer. "Why is an enforcer scanning your shop?"

"How should I know?" Dorian whispered back, looking genuinely annoyed. "He marched in here five minutes ago, mumbling about 'unauthorized planar distortions.' I told him the only distortion here was his terrible posture, but he wouldn't leave!"

"His detector is searching for divine residue," Calista said, her hand resting instinctively on the hilt of her sheathed rapier. "If he gets within five paces of us, the pink chain will set off his sensors like a fireworks display."

"Can we run?" Aether asked.

"No," Calista said. "The moment we move, the physical displacement of our magic will trigger his device. We need to disable his sensors, or at least confuse them."

Aether rubbed his temples with his free hand, feeling the hollow ache in his chest where his core used to be. "Dorian, does your shop's security system connect to the divine grid?"

"Of course it does, darling. I have to protect my imports from astral thieves," Dorian whispered. "But don't worry, the sensors only scan for vulgar, low-class magic."

"Which is exactly what this pink chain is," Calista pointed out.

"Hey! This is a legendary gag relic!" Aether protested.

"It is a neon-pink nightmare," Calista retorted. "How do we bypass the sensors, Aether? You're the thief."

"I prefer 'unlicensed collector,'" Aether corrected. "And to answer your question, we need to get to the main sensor node. It's usually behind the counter, right, Dorian?"

"Yes, but Evren is standing right next to it!" Dorian hissed. "He's practically hovering over my poor assistant."

"Then we need a distraction," Aether said, a slow, mischievous grin spreading across his face. "And I have the perfect idea. But you're going to absolutely hate it, Calista."

Calista stared at him, her silver eyes filled with immediate dread. "I already hate everything about today. Spit it out."

"We play the part," Aether whispered, stepping closer to her so their shoulders brushed. "Loud, dysfunctional, codependent mortal couple. We need to walk right past him to get to the back counter. If we act like we're having a massive fight, he'll look at our faces, not our wrists."

"No. Absolutely not," Calista said flatly. "I am a Goddess of Justice. I do not 'fight' in public."

"Do you want to go to divine jail, Calista?" Aether asked, raising an eyebrow. "Because I've heard the food is terrible, and they definitely don't have your fancy lavender hair oil in the brig."

Calista ground her teeth, her jaw clenching so hard Aether could hear it. "Fine. What do I do?"

"Just follow my lead," Aether winked. "And try to look like you actually tolerate my presence."

"That will be the hardest part of the mission," she muttered.

Before she could protest further, Aether violently grabbed her hand inside the trench coat pocket, pulled her out into the main aisle, and let out a dramatic, theater-shaking gasp.

"I cannot believe you, Calista! You always do this!" Aether yelled, his voice echoing off the high ceilings of the boutique.

Calista blinked, momentarily paralyzed. "Do... what?"

"You drag me to these overpriced boutiques, promise me we're just 'looking,' and then you spend three hours debating the artistic value of a beige scarf!" Aether shouted, dramatically waving his free right hand in the air as he dragged her toward the center of the showroom.

Evren's head whipped around instantly, his sharp, dark eyes locking onto the loud couple.

"Well!" Calista cleared her throat, her voice rising to a stiff, awkward pitch as she tried to match his energy. "If you didn't have the fashion sense of a sewer rat, Aether, I wouldn't have to spend so much time educating you, dear!"

"'Dear'?" Aether squeaked, breaking character for a fraction of a second. He quickly recovered, throwing his hands up. "Ouch! That was uncalled for! But seriously! You promised me we'd get lunch! My stomach is literally digesting itself, and here you are, looking at velvet!"

They were now halfway across the showroom, moving directly toward the counter where the sensor node was located. Evren stepped away from the counter, his hand resting on his runic detector as he watched them approach.

"Is there a problem here?" Evren asked, his voice deep, smooth, and utterly devoid of any warmth.

"Ah! Evren! Darling!" Dorian quickly swooped in, placing himself directly in Evren's line of sight while waving a silk measuring tape. "No problem at all! Just my most difficult, dramatic clients having their daily marital meltdown. Quite pedestrian, really. You should ignore them."

"They smell like divine ozone," Evren said, his eyes narrowing as they locked onto the oversized, dusty trench coat sharing their shoulders. "And they are wearing a highly irregular garment."

"It's vintage!" Aether cried out, wrapping his arm around Calista's waist to pull her closer, successfully hiding the pink chain beneath the heavy fabric of the coat. "And we are in couples therapy, okay? Our therapist told us to share things. Like this coat! It builds trust!"

Calista stiffened at his touch, her hand clamping down on his hip, but she forced a tight smile. "Yes. It's... highly therapeutic. We must move as one. Otherwise, we fail the exercise."

Evren raised his silver detector. The runes on the device began to glow with a faint, pulsing blue light. "I need you both to step forward and present your identification. There was a major magical spike in the alleyway next door, and your signatures are... fluctuating."

Aether’s heart hammered against his ribs. He felt his knees growing weaker by the second. He whispered to Calista under his breath, "The sensor dome on the floor. Behind the mannequin. Trip it. Now."

Calista glanced down. A small, silver dome-like security sensor was nestled near the base of a velvet display. She extended her right leg, disguised by the long hem of the trench coat, and aggressively kicked the sensor, sliding it hard against the wall.

At the exact same microsecond, Aether reached into his pocket, channeling his absolute last drop of residual magic into a tiny, invisible spark. He aimed it directly at the shop’s main control panel behind the counter.

SPARK. BZZZT.

The overhead chandeliers violently flickered, and the sensor Calista had kicked began to spark, triggering a loud, siren-like alarm that sounded like a chorus of screaming banshees.

"Oh, my god! The inventory!" Dorian shrieked, genuinely panicking now. "The silk is going to get scorched! Somebody save the cashmere!"

Evren’s detector went completely wild, spinning erratically and emitting a high-pitched, painful whine as the magical feedback from the fried control panel flooded the room.

"What did you do?" Evren demanded, trying to stabilize his vibrating device.

"It wasn't us! It's the terrible wiring in this place!" Aether yelled over the blaring alarm. He grabbed Calista's hand inside the pocket, pulling her toward the back exit. "Come on, honey! This store is clearly haunted! Let's go!"

"Halt!" Evren called out, stepping forward, but Dorian "accidentally" tripped over a velvet stool, crashing directly into the enforcer's path and scattering a pile of expensive silk shirts across the floor.

"My shirts! Help me, Evren!" Dorian wailed, grabbing the enforcer's boots.

Calista and Aether didn't wait. They sprinted—or rather, clumsy-shuffled—through the back hallway of the boutique, bursting through the rear exit door and slamming it shut behind them.

They spilled out into the fresh air of the street behind the shop, both of them panting heavily.

"We made it," Calista breathed, leaning her back against the brick wall. She looked down at their joined hands, her expression a mix of relief and begrudging respect. "That was... shockingly effective. For a chaotic mess."

"I told you," Aether gasped, clutching his chest as his vision finally stabilized. "I'm a genius. But I think my lungs are actually on fire. I need water. Or a pastry. Mostly a pastry."

"No time," Calista said, straightening her coat. "We need to find a leyline before Evren realizes he's been tricked."

BOOM!

A massive, thunderous explosion rocked the street just around the corner. The ground violently shook, and a cloud of thick, sweet-smelling pink smoke billowed into the air, carrying the distinct scent of caramelized sugar and burning dough.

"What in the world was that?" Calista demanded, immediately drawing her silver rapier with her left hand.

"Did a bakery explode?" Aether sniffs, coughing slightly. "Why does it smell like brimstone and... croissants?"

They cautiously peeked around the brick corner.

A mortal man, dressed in a flour-dusted apron, was floating three feet off the ground, his eyes glowing with a volatile, chaotic purple light. Swirling in a circular vortex around him were dozens of pastries, all humming with unstable, explosive magical energy.

"A minor chaos spirit," Calista said, her voice instantly hardening into her professional Goddess of Justice tone. "It must have possessed a local baker during the dimensional tear from your fall."

"Hey! Why is everything my fault?" Aether protested.

The possessed baker cackled wildly, grabbing a glowing, fiery croissant from the air. "Taste the wrath of the gluten-free revolution!" he screamed, hurling the burning pastry straight at a group of fleeing mortals.

BOOM!

The pastry exploded on the pavement, leaving a smoking crater of molten sugar and blue flames.

"We have to stop him," Calista said, her silver eyes locking onto the threat.

"Whoa, whoa, wait! Calista, we are chained together!" Aether yelled, but it was too late.

Calista charged forward. The sudden, violent jerk of the neon-pink chain pulled Aether entirely off his feet. He was dragged forward, his silk robes scraping against the pavement as the handcuffs yanked him direc

tly into the line of fire.

And heading straight for them was a rapidly approaching, blazing hot, explosive croissant.

"Calista! Watch out!" Aether shrieked.

He was leaning heavily against a towering crate marked Imported Cinnamon: Handle With Extreme Care, his left shoulder flickering erratically between solid flesh and shimmering, translucent orange dust. She simply planted the heel of her boot against the warped timber, shoved hard, and let the door bang open against the interior wall with a sound like a small cannon shot. A cloud of grey dust immediately billowed out into the damp corridor, accompanied by an overpowering olfactory assault that made Calista gag instantly. It smelled like scorched vinegar, over-steeped chamomile, sulfur, and something that strongly resembled a burnt woolen sock."Close that door, you illiterate mountain goat!" a voice screeched from the gloomy depths of the room.
