Abilities

After being dealt devastating blows by Namhors in their first clashes, humans sought alternative sources of power and only then did they suprisingly discover some truths in the existence of magic. In fact, magic was discovered amongst humans. It was not in the form widely known by many which was casting of evil spells but magicians were able to do things beyond the natural without much difficulty. To make it more acceptable to many humans, these powers were termed abilities.

Science found facts and useful theories in many arts which had been written off by some religions as devilish.

Both people who possessed such powers and those which could not be explained by science were pleaded with to join the earth's military. Some shared their powers in the form of seals and imparted knowledge of it to others using mediums such as magical books while others who believed sharing of powers could be damaging were more secretive about theirs.

When the art of magic became widely spread it was discovered that the some powers were weaker than the others and that the strength of a particular magical power varied from one person to the other.

Some people can develop the powers they had gained by reading magical books and absorbing magical seals while some others easily get to their limit hence affecting the quality of their powers.

Furthermore, some powers are found to be weaker than others. Many who gain access to ability books and seals clamour for stronger powers but unfortunately, these powers are more difficult to learn and to develop.

These powers greatly boosts ones energy level but can only be acquired by the lucky ones whose family could buy one for or people who were good enough to attract the attention of a corporation. Others were given by the military to ready soldiers of theirs.

Unfortunately for Sunny just like every person from his locality he couldn't afford an ability book or seal. Worst of all even amongst those who lacked these abilities, he was considered to be so weak. If he knew what the level test was about, he would certainly not have high hopes about it.

He just stood transfixed watching all those who had completed their tests. And from what he could see many came out with changed numbers on their digital badges which at default displayed the number 1.0.

From his observation it wasn't difficult to tell that any student who dressed richly would never come out with a level of 1.0 as is the default but at the same time, he did not fail to observe that there were poor looking and ragged people who also came out with levels higher than 1.0. He could not help but wonder what sort of test it would be.

'What's your ability?" Someone distracted him from getting further proofs on his hypothesis. It was the same blue eyed boy who informed him that the students were now entering the hall which they were in currently. Since he looked harmless, Sunny saw no harm in telling him the truth. In the worst case he would just move away from him and that was not a strange thing to him. Being treated in such manner could not take even a little piece off his esteem any longer.

"I have none." He replied.

"That's no issue either. You would certainly get one which would suit you most assigned to you by professionals." His show of concern and warmth in his speech surprised Sunny but he played along. After all it was nothing bad to make friends.

"What of yours?" Sunny asked him. From his observations, he was richly dressed so no doubt his parents could certainly afford ability books or seals for him.

"Mine is complicated." He replied. "But even without an obvious ability, I am plenty strong already.

"What ability do you think is the coolest for you?"

"Have you heard of anyone that has to do with flight?" Sunny avoided answering the question directly as he had never given that a thought." He thought he would solely depend on the military to detect the most suitable for him and had only asked about flight because he thought it already had something to do with him and would complement him more even though he didn't like it. Learning another ability might be damaging to him.

"There's no ability like flight but people with abilities such as telekinesis and wind control are capable of flight." Would you love to fly? I don't think that should be a factor that should determine the ability you would choose. You would surely fly plenty if you become a soldier.

"I would love an ability of foresight." It suddenly occured to Sunny and he couldn't hide his excitement."

When the former heard it, his cheeks spread out letting out a very dry smile. This is the rarest of all known abilities. Almost everyone would love to have this ability however people who would have this ability are selected by the Head True mage himself and are mandated to live in secrecy without mingling in the earth's affairs. Their powers seem to work better when they are in colonies. Unless you love the secluded life style the foresight ability is not for you.

The True mages are the people who had innate abilities mostly inherited from their parents and passed down to their offsprings. The position of the head mage us exclusively reserved for people with the purest bloodlines.

After hearing this, Sunny slid into deep thoughts. At home, he had wished to live in a world away from the disturbances of haters however, coming to the military academy looked like a solution to it. Even if it was a permanent solution to being insulted by anyone, he would not love to be away from everyone forever and especially doing nothing about the problems the earth was facing at the moment. They seemed too dumb for his liking. And even if he would have loved to join them no matter what it entails, he doubted if he would ever be chosen by the Head Birth mage would select him.

"Is possible to suddenly discover an ability within you even though you are not related to any family of True mages or without reading any ability books and absorbing ability seals of any kind?" The events of the previous days played in his mind. He believed this could be the explanation he needed. To understand more of what happened to him the previous day.

"One might be born with an innate ability in extremely rare cases even without being related in any way to the family of True mages. These abilities might be recessive at first but would manifest at some point in the person's life especially in times of danger. Also, in extremely rare cases, abilities and magical powers of some mages roam about and select people which it finds worthy enough to wield it. However all there happen in extremely rare cases and it might be difficult for such a person to develop the ability acquired by such extent to a reasonable extent especially if turns out to be a rare or private ability Only fools would wait for things like this to be their case."

By private abilities he meant abilities which the wielders refuses to share the secret behind the art and are always ready to recruit or eliminate all those who are found to wield their powers if such a person does not originally belong to their family by birth.

He wanted to ask about the notification he had been receiving lately but desisted from it but just then he received a notification from it.

[You have gained more knowledge on your system]

[10 exp received]

[15/100 exp]

"That click in my head is called a system." He realized. "He only explained abilities to me. Does this mean that my system is some sort of abilities?" He thought and of course he got no reply.

"What sort of ability is this?" One which grants me useless exp for performing tasks? What purposes can the exp serve me? He didn't have answers to these questions and the only way to discover was to diligently do the quests till he gets to level ten since it has not given him any task he considered to go against his conscience or below his standard.

He was still ruminating over this when sergeant Scott invited the next sets of students to take their test.

"Next, Bill Janson, Reggie Storms, Sunny Raven, Sam Valerie and Grey Tilda."

"It is time for my test I am Reggie Storms." The blue eyed boy beside him told him and extended his hands for a handshake.

"I am Sunny Raven. It is also time for my test too." Sunny shook his hand smiling at the look of shock on the boy's face.
