0001-The Public Disgrace

The afternoon feeling over the Michigan city was unfriendly, smelling of rain and incoming thunder.

Above the busy streets, a big television screen blinked on the side of a tall building, flashing a breaking news story in bright red letters.

Pedestrians stopped walking under their black umbrellas, staring up in shock as a news anchor spoke with a serious, dramatic voice.

"Trending news across the defense sector," the anchor announced, her voice filled with fake pity and public disgust. "Former Colonel Andrew Lloyd, once known as a top protector of our country, has been stripped of his rank, his medals, and his honor in total disgrace."

The screen showed fake court documents claiming he was involved in military corruption.

"The Legendary Warlord of the South. The man who once led over 10,000 elite battalion soldiers on several battlefields now stands as a criminal outcast," she finished.

Right under the screen, a crowd of people started cursing and laughing.

A group of rich businessmen standing near a luxury shop door pointed at the screen while sipping their expensive coffee.

"Look at that!" a young stockbroker laughed, fixing his expensive tie with a smug grin. "The Iconic God of War turned out to be nothing more than a common crook stealing from taxpayers. They should throw him in a dark hole forever. Bullshit!"

"Good riddance," his friend agreed, shaking his head. "Can you imagine being married to a guy like that? The Harrison family must want to die of shame right now."

Across the street, people inside a cozy café pointed their mocking fingers at the TV monitors, trading cruel jokes and insults.

Every headline and whisper tore away the last pieces of dignity the fallen soldier had left, turning his painful ruin into free entertainment for the rich.

Far away from the crowded downtown streets, deep in the wealthy hills where multi-million-dollar mansions were behind tall gates, a dusty car drove up quietly and stopped.

Colonel Andrew Lloyd opened the door and stepped out onto the damp street.

He did not look broken by his country's heavy betrayal and mockery, but his broad shoulders carried a massive weight.

He wore a simple, worn-out coat that smelled of old rain, and he had only a single canvas bag holding the few personal items left from his fifteen most dedicated years in the army.

In front of him were the massive iron gates of the Harrison Villa, a giant palace made of white stone with neat gardens and bright outdoor lights that seemed to laugh at the coming dark.

Lady Harrison was waiting at the top of the wide stone steps, wrapped in heavy fur coats, her face twisted in pure hate and disgust.

She refused to walk down a single step to meet him, looking down from her high spot as if she were staring at a sick stray dog crawling out of a ditch.

Without saying a single word of greeting or family familiarity, she snatched an official envelope from a servant standing nearby.

She ripped Andrew's official discharge papers into tiny pieces and threw the paper shards directly into his face.

The paper pieces drifted down like dirty snow, sticking to his wet coat.

"You brought a curse on this family the moment you walked through our doors, Andrew!" Lady Harrison screamed at the top of her lungs, her voice full of poison that echoed off the stone walls.

"You are nothing more than a disgraced, useless dog, and you dragged my foolish daughter down into the mud with you!"

Andrew met the insult with a disappointed glare. His face stayed hard like stone, his eyes locked onto the old woman with a quiet, icy stare.

Up on the second-floor balcony, behind heavy glass doors, his wife Camella was watching the whole humiliating episode.

Her stomach twisted with a mix of leftover affection and deep, burning fear.

She looked down at the man who had been her husband for more than eight years, standing alone in the cold rain.

But the heavy fear of her mother's anger and the sweet pull of high-society wealth poisoned her heart completely.

Instead of running down to protect him, Camella chose to save herself.

She pushed open the balcony door and stepped out into the open air, her eyes fierce and cold with bitter anger.

She looked down at Andrew not with sadness, but with swelling hate as she smacked her tongue with disdain:

"You brought this entirely on yourself, Andrew!" Camella shouted down from the balcony, her voice cutting through the wind to join her mother's cruel attack.

"For years you dragged me through your dangerous shadow, and now you expect me to share your filth? I spit on your years of service! Our marriage is over right here and today. Don't you ever dare look at my daughter again!"

By turning her back and screaming her own insults from above, Camella joined the mob of cruelty, dealing a deep emotional wound that hurt far worse than any stranger's words.

Lady Harrison and Camella's heart-wrenching hit across the walls meant that neighbours opposite the Harrison's Villa overheard the cursing and had to peep through the window.

“The shameless, corrupt Legendary Warlord of the South is finally back! I expected him to hang himself somewhere in the bush! Pathetic criminal!” The household husband mocked.

His wife poured more salt on the open wound. “I thought he was a good soldier; I curse the day the nation celebrated him as the decorated God of War!”

Suddenly, the front doors burst open from the inside.

Lady Harrison commanded. “Get back now! Don't let her stride off!”

Little eight-year-old Stephanie Lloyd slipped past the startled guards, ignoring her grandmother's sharp screams to stop.

The little girl ran down the hardwood steps, splashing through puddles, and threw her arms tightly around Andrew's waist, burying her face deep into the wet wool of his coat.

"Daddy... I saw it on the TV at our neighbor's house," Stephanie sobbed, her small body shaking hard as hot tears soaked through Andrew's shirt.

"They said awful things about you. Even Mommy yelled at us from upstairs. Why are they so mean? Where are we going to sleep?"

Hearing his daughter's voice, broken by fear and betrayal, hit Andrew harder than any bomb on the battlefield.

The sharp, painful sting of human humiliation pierced his chest like a rusty knife.

He could handle the fake court case, the public stares, Lady Harrison's hate, and even Camella's bitter betrayal.

But hearing his eight-year-old child suffer for something she had nothing to do with cut a bleeding hole straight through his heart.

Dropping his duffel bag into the mud, Andrew knelt in the freezing rain until his eyes were level with his daughter.

He gently cupped her cold, shaking cheeks with his rough hands, using his thumbs to wipe away the fast-flowing tears.

The cold look in his eyes melted into a deep, loving aura.

"Look at me, my sweet girl," Andrew whispered, his voice steady, soft, and calm against the howling wind.

"Listen to your daddy. No matter what the world says, no matter who screams from these walls, I am right here. As long as I am breathing, nobody will ever hurt you. We are going to build a home, and you will never cry again. Do you trust Daddy?"

Stephanie sniffled, locking her tear-filled eyes onto his steady gaze, and nodded slowly, wrapping her small arms tighter around his neck. "I trust you, Daddy."

Andrew stood up slowly, keeping his daughter safely behind his wide shoulders.

When he raised his eyes back toward the top of the steps, all the warmth was gone, replaced by a bottomless, icy emptiness so cold that Lady Harrison took half a step backward without meaning to.

"Guards! Are you deaf?!" Lady Harrison bellowed, her face turning a bright, angry red from embarrassment because she had just felt scared. "Throw this trash and his brat out onto the public street! Scrub the pavement where they stood!"

Four huge estate guards hesitated for a moment before moving forward to please their boss.

They grabbed Andrew's shoulders and shoved him hard toward the gates.

Andrew did not fight back with force; he just stepped backward smoothly, making sure Stephanie stayed completely safe and untouched.

With a loud, heavy crash, the big iron gates slammed shut, locking them out in the freezing rain.

Standing on the wet public sidewalk outside the rich estate, Andrew pulled his daughter close under his coat.

He did not rush away.

Instead, he turned his head and gave one slow, long look through the iron bars at the bright lights of the mansion, where music and laughter were already starting up again inside.

He leaned down and whispered his first sharp warning into the wind, speaking so softly that only the falling rain and the little girl could hear it, but it had the heavy weight of a coming storm:

"You are celebrating a roof that isn't yours, Lady Harrison. Enjoy the fake show while it lasts. Because the ground under your feet is already rotting away to dust, and when it falls, there will be nowhere left to run."

Inside the warm, safe glass of the mansion, Lady Harrison poured herself a glass of wine and laughed loudly with her guests, raising a toast to the total ruin of the outcast.

She had no idea her silly laughter had just signed the death warrant for her family.
