Zero Day: The Static Protocol

Zero Day: The Static Protocol

Kai Osei was scanning groceries when the world glitched. One second his coworker Renata was smiling at him; the next, her face split into gray static and fell apart like broken glass. Reality is corrupting — buildings, streets, people, all dissolving into "Static," a virus in the code of the world itself. And somehow, Kai is the only one who can see the system behind it: a pale blue panel offering him the one thing nobody else has. The ability to patch it. But Kai isn't the only Admin left standing. Somewhere out there, others have found the same power — and some of them don't want to save the world. They want to own what's left of it. Every zone Kai patches, every survivor he saves, puts a target on his back. He has one shot to stop the Static before it swallows everything he knows. If he fails, there won't be a second update.

Chapter: Chapter 8 — Six Years Ago
"Sit down," Adrian said. "Please. All of you. This will go easier if you're not standing like you're about to run."Kai didn't sit. His legs felt too unsteady to trust with the decision, but his pride wouldn't let him fold into a cot in front of a man who'd just detonated the last six years of his life with a single sentence. Renata sat instead, tugging gently at his sleeve until he perched on the cot's edge beside her, more out of exhaustion than agreement."Six years ago," Adrian said, "I wasn't a Director. I wasn't an Admin. I was a systems architect — the actual kind, the boring kind, before that word meant anything like it means now. I worked on a research team that had found something underneath the normal architecture of things. A layer of code, for lack of a better word, that the world ran on without anyone knowing it was there.""You found the system," Kai said. "Before it existed.""We found the *seed* of it," Adrian said. "A protocol nobody understood, buried in infrastruct

Chapter: Chapter 7 — Intake
Intake turned out to be a converted bank branch three blocks in, the vault door still standing open behind the front desk like a monument to a currency that didn't matter anymore. The woman behind the desk introduced herself as Yolanda, mid-fifties, reading glasses pushed up into gray-streaked hair, moving through the registration questions with the brisk efficiency of someone who'd asked them a thousand times and stopped being surprised by any answer."Names, prior residence zone, Admin status if applicable," she said, not looking up from her clipboard. "And before you ask, no, I don't need your life story, I need three facts and a working thumbprint for the log.""Kai Osei, formerly Aisle Seven," Kai said, and something about saying it out loud made the last few hours feel suddenly, absurdly real. "Provisional Admin. This is Renata Marsh, civilian, same origin zone."Yolanda's pen paused, very briefly, on the word *provisional*, before continuing without comment. "Kessler vouching f

Chapter: Chapter 6 — What the Static Remembers
They'd been walking maybe forty minutes when Kai realized the gray plain wasn't as empty as it looked. At first he thought it was a trick of the light — or whatever passed for light out here, that flat, sourceless gray that came from everywhere and nowhere at once. But the longer he watched, the more he started to notice shapes half-submerged in the static underfoot, like objects sunk in shallow, cloudy water. A mailbox, tilted at an angle, its red flag still raised. A bicycle, wheels frozen mid-spin. A dog, or the suggestion of one, curled where it had been sitting when the world stopped being a world."Don't look too long at any of it," Priya said, not glancing back, like she'd caught him slowing his pace. "The static remembers what used to be here. It's not dangerous unless it decides to remember you specifically. But staring invites that.""How does staring invite anything?" Kai asked, though he sped up anyway, some animal part of his brain agreeing with her before his logic caugh

Chapter: Chapter 5 — The Losing Side
Nobody spoke for a long moment after the doors swung shut. The kids by the pillars stayed pressed into their parents' laps. The ticket counter woman had gone back to staring at nothing in particular, the specific blankness of someone who'd trained herself not to react to things that walked through those doors uninvited."Priya." Kai's voice came out low. "What did he mean. The losing side."Priya lowered the rifle, slow, but didn't holster it. Her jaw was tight in a way Kai hadn't seen yet, not even facing down the Bulk Corruption in the alley. "Sit down," she said. "Both of you. This isn't a hallway conversation."Renata was already sitting, still pale, still gripping the static charm like it was the only solid thing left in the world. Kai lowered himself onto the bench beside her, and Priya took the seat across from them, elbows on knees, the posture of someone about to explain something she'd rather not."Reclamation Protocol keeps score," she said. "That part's true, whatever else

Chapter: Chapter 4 — Ward Stones
The transit station rose out of the gray like something the world had decided to keep on purpose.Kai saw it before he understood what he was looking at — a squat brick building with actual windows, actual light spilling warm and yellow through them, utterly at odds with the flat static plain surrounding it. As they got closer he saw the source: stones set into the foundation at even intervals, each one carved with lines of glowing blue script, humming at a pitch that pushed back against the horizon's drone instead of blending into it."Ward stones," Priya said, slowing to a walk as they crossed the last stretch of open ground. "Old tech. Older than the Reclamation Protocol itself, near as anybody can tell. Nobody's figured out who made the first ones, but they hold a perimeter against corruption bloom, and static can't cross a completed ring.""Who completes them?" Kai asked."Admins. Same as everything else worth having in this city now." She pushed through the station's front doors

Chapter: Chapter 3 — Signal Loss
Outside, the world didn't look like a parking lot anymore. It didn't look like anything Kai had a word for.The asphalt was gone, replaced by a flat gray plain that shifted faintly underfoot, like walking on a television screen turned all the way up to a channel that didn't exist. Cars sat frozen mid-static, some of them only half-rendered — a sedan with its front half solid steel and its back half a shivering wall of gray noise, the tailpipe fading into nothing a few inches past the bumper. The horizon hummed the same low, constant note Kai had heard inside the store, except out here it was louder, close enough that he could feel it in his molars."Stay inside the charm's range," Dez said, falling into step beside Renata. "About six feet. Static doesn't eat you instantly out here, but it likes to nibble.""Comforting," Renata muttered, and pressed the little black tag tighter against her collarbone.Priya walked point, rifle low but ready, scanning the gray plain with the unhurried f
