Chapter Five

Herbert Halloway had prepared his entourage and would be leaving for Oriental Hotel. It was one of the biggest and the most popular hotels on Lagos Island. It was early in the morning where he sat in his office. None of his family could be traced not even where he was from as it had become a mystery. The police had made effort to trace his root but it was all to no avail.

The fleets of cars in his garage had been prepared. He was seated on his favourite big sofa where he was smoking vehemently. His bouncers were behind him with their chest jiggling like an hungry Dog. Some of the guard walked in.

“My Lord. We are ready to go.”

Herbert Halloway nodded. Forthwith he went on his toe, they trembled and adjusted. The exit door had been opened with the two guards incharge of the door having their head bowed. Herbert Halloway was led out of the room to the garage where the cars that would be conveying him to the hotel had been prepared. They were also other ten cars which were to serve as a convoy had also been prepared.

Herbert Halloway did enter the hotel with more than 20 men who were just escorts. Everywhere became filled with noise when his presence was noticed. Everyone began to order for whatever they wanted because he would pay for everything.

Sergeant Clinton and Detective Sam were seated at one corner taking note of everything happening. The ladies they also brought were seated at a corner and were already doing as they were told when Herbert Halloway entered. The curvy shape and the huge front and backside the ladies were endowed with was difficult for any of them not to catch his interest. Sergeant Clinton and Detective Sam wore a black cap which could easily concealed their identity.

They knew he was suspicious with the way he was looking around with intense look.

Herbert Halloway was still seated looking around cunningly. He had the habit of study any environment he found himself. He knew there was certainly spies everywhere he went hence he was always cautioning the way he behaved and everything he did. When he caught sight of the ladies at first glance when they walked past him, he lost concentration and couldn’t take his eyes off them.

“Yes. He has seen them,” Sergeant Clinton mumbled.

“He can’t concentrate anymore,” Detective Sam smiled.

Sergeant Clinton drifted his chair nigher to Sam they could communicate without any other person hearing.

Herbert Halloway summoned one of his bouncer nearer and mumbled into his ear. Clinton and Sam were wondering what was just said and the next second they saw the bouncer walked up to the ladies. They had a brief talk and he walked back to Hebert Halloway whispering to him.

Herbert Halloway stood up by himself and walked gently to the ladies. While walking, he was treading gently twirling his eyes around.

“Hello, gentle ladies,” Herbert Halloway said.

He was awed when the ladies didn’t regard him as he thought. He had never been in such situation before. Any lady he approached were always trembling and wouldn’t dare go against whatever he demanded. It seemed the ladies were classed and wasn’t even looking at his side.

They stared at him. He was short of words. He signaled one of the bouncers and he walked up to him. He whispered into his ear and the bouncer went out to the motor park and returned with bags of money.

“What do you want?” One of the ladies asked.

“Do you know who I am?”

They shook their head. He knew that was why they had been behaving like a stranger. He had a rough thought that maybe they were recently recruited into the Hotel. The ladies were acting exactly according to the script.

“Take this money. I will give you all. This is a bag of money containing 20 million naira.”

The ladies smiled and gawked at each other. What was before Herbert Halloway seemed to be bigger than him. It seemed he was failing big time and he went on his toe walking back to the seat where he sat with his guy. He summoned another bouncer.

“Go and meet those ladies and ask the necessary questions,” Herbert Halloway said and withdrew looking at him as he walked up to the ladies.

The questioning was going smoothly. Herbert Halloway was surprised when they gave a better audience to the bouncer he sent than him. He saw the way they were looking at him as he was conversing with them and a few minute later after he finished talking with them, he withdrew and went back to Herbert.

“Yes. I have asked them the necessary questions. They didn’t come together. I think they met here,” the bouncer said.

“You mean they came separately?”

The bouncer nodded.

“So what’s the outcome?”

“Yes. They gave me their cards. They are engage in different businesses and I thought maybe you can do business with them. I have made a leeway for you so you can get to talk to them better now. They weren’t comfortable with the way you approached them because they thought you were belittling them.”

“Oh!” Herbert Halloway exclaimed with his eyes glued at them as they sipped the wine on the table in their midst. He stood up again and wanted to go and try. This time, it was going to be easier because he had found a way to introduce himself better since they were also engage in business.

“I am sorry ladies for the way I introduced myself earlier. I am also business man. I was surprised when he told me now that y’all are friends but come separately.”

They kept feigning like he was talking too much and he noticed another disinterest in them. He thought maybe he had flopped again. He stopped talking and brought out his own business card too. They were five and he gave one to each them.

Herbert Halloway seldom gave his card out due to the kinda business he was in despite not being open about it and with informations on the card.

“I am sorry to ask. Are y’all married?”

“No!” They chorused.
