Chp 10 - No Beggars Allowed

Damianus had such an enjoyable time exploring the flourishing city of Santa Eyre. The more he looked around, the more difference he could detect about this world and that which he was used to.

The World of Origins had everything over this one when it comes to the supernaturals but they could learn a lot from this world when it came to architectural brilliance and many other inventions that he couldn’t even begin to understand.

“All in good time though,” he said to himself as he mused about the people whom he already met and the new name he was advised to take.

Damien. He sounded it out and it didn’t sound too bad. Though it sounded strange to his ears, he knew that he would get used to it as time went on.

Damien. Damien of the Human world. He could see the humour in the situation after all. When in the world of the origins, he was Damianus but here in the world of humans and their beautiful people who seemed to be in a hurry to get somewhere; he would be Damien, a nobody to most of them.

He was on the sidewalk close to the Main square. A very busy part of Santa Eyre that occupied the most affluential Maxmillan business centre that was the avenue to over 1000 stylish brands, the centre has about 80 stores that catered to women, men and kids; fashion, home appliances, food, technology, beauty and many more.

It was rare for one to get to Main Square without getting what one needed to buy. Unless you are poor of course. Nothing in Main Square was meant for the poor to get. The place was home to internationally known brands with exorbitant prices. A place where you can get the least-priced toothbrush for as high as a thousand dollars was not a place for someone like Damianus to even want to think of patronising.

Not that he had any intention of going in anyway, he was just enjoying the flow of people coming in and out. Richly dressed, exotic girls not unlike the girls he had met when he first got to Santa Eyre, stylishly dressed men and women in exotic cars. He wondered briefly what the inside would look like and he fantasized about what the numerous stores would look like or what he would get even if he went inside.

He saw the security men milling around giving him an askance look though. Then one, in particular, talked into an extended device attached to his ear then he started walking towards Damianus.

“Not again,” Damianus thought instantly when he saw the man giving him the same look those people had cast on him that morning.

“Could it be that staring at buildings was also a crime here?” he thought to himself as he saw that there was no mistaking the fact that the man was truly heading toward him.

He decided not to wait to find out this time around. Not only could things get messy if the man caught up with him but he might even get to miss the party. He quickly walked off at a hurried pace.

“Hey!” he heard behind him but he didn't wait “You had better not let me see you here again, weirdo!” he increased his pace.

When he had gone far, he looked back to see the man talking to another security man and pointing at him.

For all the good things he had learnt about this new world so far, one thing seemed to be their main shortcoming though. They were way too hostile. Nobody would talk to a stranger like that in the world of the Origins. Or even tried to slap them.

Not even when new, strange supernaturals mistakenly teleport to the World of Origins were they treated in such hostile manners. Originers were known for their hospitality and encompassing love. That was why they could all live together in harmony despite how different they were from each other.

Damianus was fast learning that that was not the case in this new world though and not everyone would accept him the way the New Order clan had. He decided to avoid places like the Main Square as much as possible. Supernatural or not, he didn’t relish embarrassment after all. He knew that the security man was giving his colleague details about him. And he was sure it couldn’t be favourable. Better to avoid trouble. He thought.

He heard a clang to his left and he looked up to see a gigantic clock on a dome clocked at 7 pm. Damianus grinned when he saw the fat face of the inbuilt clock and he marvelled at the brilliance of these people. Yes, they might be hostile but their creativity was unlike any other.

“How convenient,” he thought.

He decided to start heading for the party. They agreed that if he couldn’t make it back to the clan’s abode by six, he should simply head to the venue afterwards. Michael’s twin would be waiting for him.

He smiled to himself as he thought of the identical twins with such great differences in their personalities.

Michael needed no announcement when he was at a place. He exuded confidence and his leader’s aura sits comfortably on him that one need not be told before realising that he was not a man to be trifled with. Not even when he was at his most affable.

Mathew on the other hand, well. Mathew was just Mathew.

Damianus checked his pocket for the human money that his master gave to him a while back, he was glad he had it on him. He had been seeing people coming out and getting into the orange little cars that he learnt in The Book were called cabs.

He called one and gave him his destination. The breeze billowing on his face and the amazing sights he came across on his way to the hotel was another thrill on their own. Of course, he could move faster than the cab if he so wanted but it was a wonder to him all the same. He saw beautiful malls and teenagers with blaring music. A man sitting by the roadside playing with a  musical instrument, not unlike the Jiahu flutes that the talented Originers played at home. He saw some people dropping something into the cardboard box in front of the player.

Damianus felt excitement quicken his system as he came close to the venue.

“This is the Bentall Hotel, my man,” the cab driver said as he stopped in front of a magnificent building.

Damianus thanked him and paid him the fare, which was almost all he had on him and he was left with just a dollar left in his pocket.

He saw beautifully dressed couples and individual people going towards the side entrance that lead to the event centre of the 8-Star hotel. He joined them eagerly as he looked up at the 15-story building hotel designed with exquisite architectural know-how and the respect he had for humans doubled. They truly are…

He stopped gaping when the whispers started penetrating and he looked around to see people pointing at him as they put great distance between himself and them as they entered the massive side gates that led to the event centre of the Hotel.

A woman put a hand to her nose as if to block a foul smell as she said haughtily. “Oh my God. How did such a creature get here?”

“This is looking bad for the Bentalls. Who is this loser? If he enters the party, then I am leaving!” another said

Damianus was annoyed by their words and he was about to turn around to find Mathew when one of the guards came to him and shouted.

“Hey, leave this place now. This is not a charity event for beggars like you to attend! Leave immediately!”

“I am not a beggar!” Damianus said in angst “I am a guest!”

The guard gave him a look and then burst into laughter.
