01 Foster Home
Noah Shepherd woke to the familiar thud of something heavy crashing against the garage wall. It was obviously Derp, his oversized foster brother, waking him up horribly for fun. The vibration rattled the thin metal roof overhead, sending a sprinkle of dust onto Noah's face. The young man didn't open his eyes right away. He just lay there on the deflated air mattress that served as his bed, breathing in the stale mix of oil, rust, and mildew that clung to everything in this corner of the garage. Another day of being eighteen years old, he thought bitterly. Another day of pretending this is normal. The rain outside was a steady roar, pounding like it wanted to get in. Noah finally cracked his eyes open and stared at the underside of the wooden staircase that loomed over him. The ceiling was his constant reminder that he lived beneath everyone else in this house. Literally. "Noah!" Mindy's voice exploded from inside the main house, venomous enough to cut through the walls. "I swea
02 Dog Days
Noah tried to push past, but Cory's hand shot out, slamming him against the lockers. The metal rang painfully against his spine. "I heard your little sister has the nuke plague," Cory sneered, his breath hot in Noah's face. "Why don't you, you know, give up. Let her die. Stop mooching off society." The others laughed. One of them—Jax, Cory's shadow—kicked Noah's worn backpack into a puddle forming by the door, making the books splash out. Noah said nothing. He never did. He just gathered his stuff, water dripping from his hair, and trudged to class. The day dragged on in painful boredom and misery. Teachers ignored his raised hand when he knew the answers. It was too risky to call on the "problem kid." His classmates whispered insults whenever they got a chance. Alice Waverly sat three rows ahead in history, perfect as always, laughing with friends who had parents in high places. The most beautiful girl in the world. She had glanced at him once last year, a flicker of something li
03 Eve Trinity
The hybrids' skins split open, revealing scales. Claws extended from their limbs like knives, and their eyes glowed sickly yellow with rage. It was the dark side of hybridization—feral mutation. It happened rarely, creating deadly, powerful creatures that could not be countered without heavy firepower. One of the feral hybrids locked eyes with the crowd and roared, spraying spittle. It swung a jagged metal pole torn from a seat, smashing a man's skull with casual brutality. Blood sprayed across the windows. Noah froze. This is real. This is how it ends—ripped apart in a subway because the world has always hated me. How will Lia live on her own during her last days? Piper grabbed his arm. "Noah, we have to run—" It was too late to escape. The lead feral charged straight through the panicking crowd, barreling towards them. "Oh fu—" Then—a blur of motion passed before them. A young woman dropped from the overhead handrails where she had been standing unnoticed, landing between the fe
04 The God Killer
As Griffin looked around in confusion, he felt the temperature rise. He turned around just in time to see a searing ball of fire shoot towards him. Boom! The flame attack hit him square on the torso, disrupting his flight system. Griffin went into a tailspin, dipping below the clouds. Aegis recovered in a few seconds and brought him back up. [Recalibrating Flight…] [Successful] [Damage is marginal. All systems are active and functional] "Where did the attack come from?" Griffin spat, searching for the source in panic. A fireball was an elemental attack that the adamantine armor neutralized. But the very idea of an enemy at this elevation above the clouds was ridiculous. Who was the culprit? His question was answered shortly. [High energy signatures detected] The mattress of clouds parted ominously as a figure emerged from under it. Seven feet tall with reptilian features and energy crackling around him. It was Dagon! He levitated effortlessly, a feat that looked much cooler th
05 Eternal Equations
[Initiating Eternal Equations: 1/3] [Equation 1: TimeTailor] [Confirm execution: Y/N] The scientist could have kissed Aegis on the lips if it were a human. "You finished the task just in time, old friend. You never disappoint. Confirmed! Begin execution!" [Set Time Speed: x01, x0.5, x0.25, x0.1] TimeTailor was one of the three eternal God Formula equations that Griffin had worked on for decades. Controlling the speed of time was deemed impossible, but not for Aegis, which could replicate the creator's power. Eternal Equations did not require mana to execute, but could be used only once by an advanced user. Griffin needed to make it count. "One-fourth the speed of time should give me enough to keep Dagon in check and roll out my plan. Let's go for x0.25." [Equation 1: TimeTailor: 0,25] [Activated!] Abruptly, everything slowed down. The progress of Dagon's downward plunge was also affected. In fact, the entire world seemed to have caught its breath. It was only Griffin's though
06 Dog Days
"Bloody scoundrel! Is it not enough that I am feeding a loser like you!" Mindy Shepherd snarled at her son. "Now you have demands?" Noah clenched his jaw to suppress his anger. He was eighteen, tall, and athletic with rather good looks. However, in his worn-out, greased clothes, he looked like a house servant. "Like I said, it is for Lia…" Mindy waved a dismissive arm as if the name was cursed. "Nonsense! Derp's birthday is coming around, and we're planning a surprise party! Do you think it is cheap to organize one in Area G? My husband is a government bureaucrat. He has a reputation to uphold!" "Tell him, Mom!" Derp chimed in from a safe corner. "Noah's never had a birthday party, so he thinks I can do without one! He wants money to spoil his diva sister!" Noah cast a spiteful glance at Derp, his rotund foster brother. The boy ate like a hippo and also looked and brayed like one. The young man suppressed the immediate urge to punch the fatso in the face. "Lia's critical care medi
07 The Academy
The Shepherds always pushed Noah to attend Concord Academy. It was because adoptive parents wouldn't get the allowances if at least one of the foster children didn't attend classes. Noah covered his sister with two old blankets and put her to sleep. He left food and water beside her mattress before leaving. It was the final week of senior high school at Concord Academy. Noah had already planned his future after graduation. The young man aspired to secure a paid internship as a skilled worker at Providence Technologies, one of the world's leading conglomerates. Then he could rent an apartment and provide healthcare for Lia by himself. Right now, every day was agony, tolerating the horrible Shepherds and their abuses. Noah walked on the footpath with a canvas bag slung over his shoulder, daydreaming about his future. He reached the Academy's gate and pulled down his hood. The watchman looked at his ID card and scoffed. Area G's children had a G watermark on the ID. Noah entered th
08 Eve Trinity
The group laughed in unison again. Adopted orphans like Noah were the butt of every joke. The young man bit his lip and started walking away. Cory rushed to his feet and blocked the path. He pulled down Noah's hood roughly and grabbed his jaw with a hand. "I'm the goddamn Class President! I wasn't done talking to you, scum!" Noah grabbed his wrist and applied light pressure. A pained expression replaced Cory's smugness abruptly. He hurriedly withdrew his hand and groaned. "What the fuck did you do to my wrist?! You maggot!" Noah was an incredible athlete and had trained his body privately for years. He never participated in Academy sports to avoid drawing attention to himself. The young man never demonstrated his strength before, but today he was in an especially foul mood. "How dare you try to hurt me, loser!" Cory raged. "Do you know who my father is? He is the Chairman of Gilbert Industries! He has contacts with the Mayor of Concord! I'll get you expelled and have your family a
09 Test Results
"What do you think of her?" a voice asked him. Noah turned in his seat to see Piper Lee join him with his plate of food. The cafeteria was bustling with students, waiting for the test results from Providence. It was a series of interviews and medical tests while tethered to a supercomputer. Noah had found the tests boring. He found a rickety table in the back that nobody else ever used. The young man had assumed he wouldn't be disturbed until Piper found him. Piper was a cyborg, although a low-key one. Only one of his eyes was bionic. The natural eye was fixed on him while the mechanical one was trained at the other end of the cafeteria, where the popular students hung out. "Tell me. Come on. What do you think of her?" "Who are you talking about?" Noah asked timidly, wishing that Piper would leave him alone. He had spoken to the boy a few times before, but those occasions were purely accidental or forced. At the moment, he found no acceptable reason the cyborg would approach him o
10 Bribery
The cyborg sighed and shook his head. "I don't get you, Noah. You are treated like scum by everyone at Concord Academy. Telling the students that you are the legendary player and influencer LoveLord will make you really popular in class! Alice Harper will come running into your arms!" "Please!" Noah urged, folding his hands. "You cannot tell anybody that I am LoveLord. I get death threats on that account!" Piper raised his arms in defeat. "Fine! Fine! Your secret is safe with me. But I need your help to figure out Eve's origin and intentions. I have a gut feeling that her secret is exponentially bigger than yours." "That sounds like blackmail to me." "Let me spell it out for you then, Noah…. It is blackmail. You forced my hand, man. How come you aren't even curious about Eve Trinity? Regardless, we can do this as partners, with no coercion. Are you in?" Noah's head started throbbing. He had a feeling that Piper Lee was all sorts of trouble. His base instincts asked him to run away
