The hybrids' skins split open, revealing scales. Claws extended from their limbs like knives, and their eyes glowed sickly yellow with rage. It was the dark side of hybridization—feral mutation. It happened rarely, creating deadly, powerful creatures that could not be countered without heavy firepower.

One of the feral hybrids locked eyes with the crowd and roared, spraying spittle. It swung a jagged metal pole torn from a seat, smashing a man's skull with casual brutality. Blood sprayed across the windows.

Noah froze. This is real. This is how it ends—ripped apart in a subway because the world has always hated me. How will Lia live on her own during her last days?

Piper grabbed his arm. "Noah, we have to run—"

It was too late to escape. The lead feral charged straight through the panicking crowd, barreling towards them. "Oh fu—"

Then—a blur of motion passed before them. A young woman dropped from the overhead handrails where she had been standing unnoticed, landing between the ferals and the passengers with perfect balance.

She had blonde hair tied back, wearing a black tactical leather jacket over combat gear. Her blue eyes were sharp and focused. She looked to be in her early twenties, with a military-straight posture and a faint glow from augmentations under her skin.

Noah had never seen someone so well-sculpted and attractive. He was awestruck for a moment.

"Everyone back!" she commanded, her voice cutting through the chaos. "I'm Agent Eve Trinity, Providence Special Squad. Stay behind me!"

Providence? Here? Noah's mind reeled. The elite anti-terrorist group. They hunted ferals, terrorists, and anomalies. What was an agent doing on a lower-district subway?

Eve didn't wait for the crowd's compliance. She moved fluidly, with lethal agility, intercepting the lead feral mid-charge. Her forearm blocked the pipe swing with a spark of energy shielding, then she countered with a palm strike to its chest, sending it staggering.

The second feral lunged from the side. Eve jumped and twisted, drawing a compact plasma pistol, firing two precise shots that burned holes through its shoulder. It howled but kept coming.

"Piper—get down!" Noah yelled, shoving his friend behind him as the third feral broke past Eve and barreled towards them.

Eve spun, kicking the second one into the wall hard enough to dent metal, but the effort cost her balance and position. The lead feral had already recovered and noticed his adversary's opening. He rushed forward, slashing his claws across her side.

Eve grunted in pain, and blood spread on her jacket, but she didn't falter. "Damn it! These are Class-Three mutations! They are much stronger than the intel said!"

She fought on like a whirlwind of training and tech. Energy blades extended from her wrists, delivering precise takedowns against the hybrids. One feral went down with a burned-out eye socket. Another lost an arm.

But there were too many of them, pouring from the front cars now. Eve was already bleeding heavily, her movements and accuracy slowing down every second.

The lead feral broke through again, slamming her against the doors. She slid down, her pistol clattering away, with her hand pressed to her side.

"Run..." she gasped, looking straight at Noah. "Get out... at the next stop.. This is your chance… Run!"

The feral raised its claws for the kill. Noah's world narrowed to that moment—Eve bleeding, Piper screaming behind him to run, and death coming for him next if he stayed.

Noah heard a crackle and felt a buzz around his wrist. "Aargh!"

He raised his arm, wincing from the jolt. A cold weight had snapped around his right wrist like a manacle. It was made of a silver-like metal—an intricate armlet, with ancient-looking runes pulsing green. Then, light exploded across his vision, and an interface appeared.

A burst of power surged through Noah, and he felt his body transforming. The energy burned hot at first, then settled into the perfect rightness, as if it belonged to him. It was like every broken piece of his life suddenly clicked into place.

A yard away from him, the feral hybrid's claws descended to kill Eve in slow motion.

Noah's mind worked lightning fast. Golden light erupted from the armlet, flowing over him like liquid armor. These were adamantine plates forming, with green equations glowing across their surfaces.

Within a split second, Noah found himself standing before Eve. The feral's claws struck his armored torso and shattered against it. It howled in pain and staggered back, dazed and confused.

Noah stood taller and stronger, power humming in his veins. For the first time, he wasn't afraid.
