Chapter 11: Do you know you're foolish?
Chapter 11 The person calling him at that moment was his employer from the bar where he did his part-time work. The man was arrogant and wicked. He doesn't pay his workers' salaries on time, but whenever one comes to work just a minute late, he'll always deduct a few bucks from their salaries. Charlie had been so furious about it, but since it was the only way to support himself, he decided to stay. “You arrogant fool! Don't you know how to add ‘sir’ when addressing me, huh?” The man barked from the other end. Charlie chuckled but didn't respond. “I'll pardon you for that,” the man continued, “Now tell me, why haven't you been coming to work? Or do you want to get fired?” “Fired?” Charlie feigned shock. “Yes! Or do you think we're joking here? It has been two straight days and you haven't shown up at work. I—” “Do whatever is in your mind, old man,” Charlie interjected, his voice calm but rude. “How dare you talk to—” The man burst into rage from the other end,
Chapter 12: Dinner Party at Prime Restaurant
Chapter 12 It was around 9 pm, and a group of people was gathered, surrounding a large table. The interior of the place was screaming wealth from every angle, the unsteady beaming of colourful lights, revealing the perfectly arranged plush sofas. This was Prime Restaurant. And the people around the table were the students from Maple City University. Duke, Charlie's best friend, was seated, dressed in a nice, gray T-shirt, but his expression held no smile. He bit his lips nervously unable to speak as he listened to what others were saying. Next to him was Stella, the class representative, who had brought up the idea of them meeting up and having a dinner gathering like this, not until it turned out the way it did. She wasn't looking bad at all. Beside her were three other students, biting their lips as if regretting coming here. Across them were Franklin, Megan, and four other students whom Franklin was supposed to treat at the Restaurant tonight. But among their midst, so
Chapter 13: Charlie arrives
Chapter 13 At that moment, heads turned, everyone getting on their feet, disbelief crossing their eyes. “Is he really here?” Rachel muttered, utterly shocked to see Charlie standing at the door, his hands casually tossed in his pockets. “Does this mean he can't really treat them?” “What difference does it make if he is here?” Erika snapped, her voice with disdain. “Is it going to change the fact that he can't afford a meal here? Stop being delusional, Rachel!” She scolded her mercilessly. “I think I wasn't in my right mind when I said that, I'm sorry,” Rachel quickly apologized. Meanwhile, Duke, when he saw Charlie, couldn't help but huff, relieved. “Thank God he's here. At least no one will have the nerve to call him a coward.” Muttering that to himself, he ran over to Charlie. “Dude, what's up? Where have you been? We've been waiting all day for you,” Duke said, concern in his voice. Charlie smiled lightly. “Got carried away by sleep,” he replied, “but don't worry,
Chapter 14: Payment time.
Chapter 14 Everyone stared at Charlie in incredulity and murmurs began to fill the table. “Is he really eating the food? I thought he was just bluffing when he was placing those orders,” Rachel murmured, her voice barely above a whisper. “Thought as well. Do you think he's really going to win against Franklin?” Erika asked, blinking in shock. “Oh, just shut up and eat!” Franklin spouted. “How dare you say this trash picker is going to win me? Are you both sick in the head?” The two quickly apologized, but Franklin glared at them briefly before taking a breath, throwing the thought off. Then he leaned back on his seat, a smirk plastered on his face as he turned to look at Charlie. “Hey Charlie, are you really being serious here? You ordered outrageous foods and even drinks, and you want me to believe you can pay for all these?” Charlie didn't respond. He continued eating, holding his chicken and gently tearing it apart. Franklin observed him closely. His expression was cal
Chapter 15: Incorrect pin
Chapter 15 Franklin marched forward, enraged. “What was that supposed to mean? A joke or what?” He said, fiercely glaring at the waitress. “Do you know how much I have in that account, huh? Over $50k! And you dare to spout out that bullshit? I guess you want to lose your job.” He lied, exaggerating the amount in his account, attempting to earn more respect. Everyone's eyes instinctively swung open wide, their hands covering their mouths astonished by the amount Franklin mentioned. The waitress looked at Franklin, unimpressed. “I'm sorry, sir, but I think you're wrong here. The payment was in process after you inserted your PIN, but along the line, it stopped, indicating insufficient balance. You can have a look.” She held up the card reader, showing Franklin the notification. Glancing down at it, he was momentarily taken aback, his eyes wide open. “T—this? It can't be possible!” He murmured, his voice low, only for him to hear. “Dad sent the money. It's enough to cover up
Chapter 16: Payment successful
Chapter 16 Everyone burst into laughter when they saw the message. “He doesn't even know the PIN to his card. Are you sure it's even his?” Rachel mocked, laughing. “He must have picked it from the road or stolen it from someone, thinking he could guess the pin, then claim it to be his afterward. I had thought he had some dignity, but I guess I was wrong. I overestimated him,” Erika chimed in, her face filled with more disdain toward Charlie now. She had never liked him and had hated it when Megan was dating him. And after what had just happened, she could only see him as nothing but trash. Charlie ignored their taunts, blinked in surprise as he had a look at the notification. The waitress had already had enough of it and glared at Charlie. She had held high respect for him, especially when he was ordering extravagant meals and wines with a calm expression. She had believed he was definitely an heir to a billion dollars. But after this? She lost her respect for him.
Chapter 17: Sorry, you can't leave.
Chapter 17 Everyone froze in place, as if struck by thunder. “That can't be possible!” “How can there be such an amount of money in that card?” Murmurs spread across the room with wide eyes, mouths covered with shock. Franklin, who had been waiting to mock Charlie, stiffened at a spot, looking at Charlie with utter disbelief. No, that can't be real! He can't have such money on him! He muttered, shaking his head. Megan was entirely dumbfounded, unable to speak. Her eyes bulged, refusing to believe what was happening. The Charlie she knew couldn't afford stuff worth $1k, but now, he just unconcernedly paid for such extravagant meals. How did he do? Did he win any lottery? She thought to herself. Duke, on the other hand, was no exception. He wore a shocking and skeptical expression if it was truly Charlie who was standing in front of everyone. He knew him in and out, and knew what he's capable of doing, but this? He couldn't fathom. All eyes were now on Charlie, but he pre
Chapter 18: Charlie, please help us
Chapter 18Cold sweat broke on Rachel's forehead as she paused. A pang of heartbreak hit her as she watched Megan, her best friend, walking away with Franklin without turning back. Her jaw tightened, her face twisted with frustration. “Why are you stopping us? Franklin ordered the meal. You should go after him to pay and not us!” “Yes!” Erika quickly tilted her head, her voice breaking with emotion as she continued. “We only ate because he instructed us to. You can't hold us responsible!” “When you get to our boss, you can explain that to him!” The waitress replied apathetically. Then she turned to the security guards, “Bring them to the boss.” The security guard was about to grip Rachel when she yelled, stepping backward, her face twisted as if irritated. “Don't touch me, I'll pay!” He halted in his steps. “Just yours?”“For both of us!”A flash of surprise passed through Erika's eyes as she glanced at Rachel. She was her best friend and she knew every detail about her. Knowing
Chapter 19: On one condition
Chapter 19 Charlie did not need to be told what had happened. He furrowed his brows in surprise, staring at the screen. Was this really Rachel calling him to help them? Unbelievable! Rachel, of all people could be calling and pleading for his assistance? What happened to pride? He instinctively smirked to himself before turning serious. “So why are you calling me? What do you want?” He asked coldly, emotionless. “Charlie, please, we need $5k. We can't stand the wrath of the Prime Restaurant's chairman. Please, help us.” At that moment a different, but familiar voice whimpered, desperate for support. Charlie smirked again when he heard Erika's broken voice. “Why should I help you?” His voice was still cold. “What happened to Franklin you both were all worshipping a few minutes ago? Has his money all gone?” Rachel bit her lips, embarrassed by Charlie's words. She knew he was mocking them. She sighed exasperatedly, but kept her anger in check. She needed his help right now and s
Chapter 20: Follow me
Chapter 20 “What?” Rachel and Erika were momentarily taken aback. “You want to have Rachel and me in a room before you can help us?” Erika growled, a bitter, amused chuckle escaped her lips. “Are you sick in the head? After taking a proper look at yourself, you think you're worthy of having my friend and me just because of $5k?” Charlie didn't flinch. “If it's just then go ahead and provide it and don't call me!” Charlie was about to cut off the call when Rachel's voice quickly came out, “Charlie, please, wait.” He halted. “What? Do you accept the condition? Yes or no?” He asked. Rachel bit her lips, frustrated. Her face turned crimson as she held the phone. She never expected that Charlie was going to make such a demand. Trade by barter. She clutched her phone, agitated, but was masked by a faint smile and a soft voice. “Charlie, please, don't you think you're going too extreme? What will the students say if this gets to their ears? That we slept with someone like….I mean this
