Well, like any other virus affecting the world, this one came all too sudden and with little control. Early morning on Monday, I prepared my son Javi to go to school. I packed his lunch, water, and breakfast for the whole day. It has been a routine for years that it only takes me an hour or so. At exactly 6:30 am, I led my son to board the school Van to go to school. I said hi to the school driver and the teacher on duty before going back into the house. I had so many things to do. I was done with laundry and heading to the kitchen when I heard shouting's from outside. We live on the third floor, room number 205. My husband worked at a research facility. For the last few days, he had been busy and had little time to spend with us. Which is normal regarding his line of work. Saving people's lives I rushed to the balcony to see what was happening, and I was stunned. People were attacking each other. It was weird. When two people attack each other, then it may be normal. When a whole lot of people attack and bite each other, then it's something else. My neighbor was also on the balcony looking outside. "What's happening?" I curiously asked the neighbor Before she could answer me, her husband came rushing to her and bit her on her neck. I was shocked and shouted at them. "What are you doing? Let her be?" He could not hear me.

Where is my son
It was getting late and if I didn’t find somewhere to take cover or hurry back then, I would be doomed. Before I drew near the house, I was shot at simultaneously. I jumped screaming and raised my hand. The deafening sound was real. I never imagined in my entire life that I would be shot at, ever.“Don’t shoot. Don’t shoot” That’s the only thing that could come on my mind everything else was black.‘What do you want here?” Asked an elderly woman whom I believe lived there for years.“I am passing by. I am looking for my son. I found their van abandoned on the main road and I believe they must have passed by here. I don’t want any trouble.”  I said anxiously.“Come in then.” Said the womenI walked to the compound and entered inside. I saw an elderly man sitting at a fire place holding a gun as well.At the other end of the corner I saw someone I k

Clearing the infected
Since we were driving on the unused road, the infected were few. I think it was because most people were caught unaware that’s why the effect was that much. The number of people that were infected was too many. I just prayed that my husband and kid were doing okay wherever they were. It was so hard to think our family was surviving in different routes with no clue where the others were. The worst part is not knowing whether they were alive or not.The phone disconnection was the worst thing ever.We were back to square one. The age where there is no communication.I didn’t know where my husband was and if he was looking for us. He may be a busy man, but he loved us to the core. He would do anything to find us. Now, that’s where the problem is. How will he find us? Suppose I found my son; where would we start looking for Richie? It was hard. Way too hard. Those were some of the worries that were on my mind. The car stopped ab

Running for their lives
Well, they say that if you cannot win, then retreat and come back stronger. There was no way we could have made it to the house alive. We had to figure out what to do next. Dan, I, and the elderly man moved ahead, trying to get rid of the undead following us. Since we left the field and entered the woods, we had to be careful of the hidden dangers in the woods. The trees were swinging. It would’ve been an excellent day to admire the beautiful rhythmic songs of the trees. At least that’s what I thought. There was no sound from birds in the forest. That could only mean one thing. It was dangerous.Following behind the old man, I carried the boy on my back. He was a bit heavy, but that was the only solution. I didn’t want him running off again in the face of danger.Old Kibali, as I called him, was so serious. He lifted his hand to signal I stop. I immediately stopped and listened as well. We could hear snarling sounds and rust

Surrounded
With a few words they kept it low but they were scared. Whatever they saw there made them scared to death. The dead roamed around coming closer to us and lingered around for a long time. It was around 8 am that almost all of them left. We could not wait for the sun to be so high to start our journey. All this period, my mind was to my son and husband. Were they with a good group? Are they able to survive? Were they taking care of Javi?Ooh Javi. He is always a cheerful boy with lots of ideas in his head. He had watched lots of cartoons and games. He could speak of Zombies in his cartoons of games as they played with his father.I laughed at myself thinking on how I used to say it was just games and movies and cartoons. Now, it was different. I was the character in a real movie in life. In a movie the character can die but be alive at the end but here. I would turn and be dead forever. My leg had a very painful muscle pull when I tried to turn

Can't get in
How did they even think of going to the warehouse? The security is good, but how did they enter it in the first place. That was the question that was running in my mind. The warehouse had 2 fences. The outer layer was made with the Razor wire fence, from what I know about the fence. It's made of a galvanized steel blade, then 2 pieces of the stainless steel razor are bound together to make it stronger on the second face layer. The welded Razor wire mesh security fence was used. As you know, they are highly secure fences and are impossible to climb or cut off with the standard tools. It gave off a secure feeling and is not easy to handle unless you won't feel pain going over it as it pieces your body."How did they even get in there?""I am not sure.""Where are the zombies coming from? They are too many. It's getting hard to get in.""Even so. That is the safest place so far.""Look at the gate. Someone is there at the second gate on the tow

Javi
As soon as we finished dealing with the undead. We turned to see people outside looking at us like crazy. It seems they had closed themselves the moment it started and have not experienced one on one with the Z's. A man in brown trousers, a black T-shirt worn with black sports shoes."Welcome to the warehouse. My name is James Kimili. I am the owner of the warehouse. There are others in here, but there are rules that you need to follow if to stay here for a few days. One. You need to know nothing in here belongs to you. Two. Don't take food without permission. Three. Water is limited. Use it sparingly. Also, the security here is good, but we all take turns guarding the area. If you are okay with, that then you are welcome to stay. Otherwise, you better go somewhere else." He finished looking at us sternly. I was mad. It's good to be strict but can we finish all the food in the warehouse in ago."Don't worry. I only want to see if my family are in there, and we will lea

“Teacher Monica, look who is here?” I said to her. She was so happy. “Teacher Daniel, you are okay. I am happy you are alive.” She beamed happily and hugged each other. From the reaction they had, they were an item. They were together.I threw them a knowing look and went to sit next to the old couple. “Here is my son. Javi.” I said to them as I pulled my son in front of them.“Wow. Boy you really are lucky. Your mother is one tough one. She fought all those people out there to find you.”“I know my mom is a badass.” He said and we all laughed. I pinched him playfully “That’s not a language you can speak.” He looked down and apologized” Sorry mummy.”“Stop being tough on the keep. He is right. You are badass.” I laughed along with teacher Daniel and Monica who had joined us“Teacher Daniel, how are things here? Is it safe?” I asked him.

Chaos
“Mom, what happening again?” Javi asked intending to go out and check“Stop! Don’t go out. Stay here. Let me check.” I stopped him before he could even take the step. What if we were attacked at that moment? I didn’t want any accidents. “Hide under the bed at the corner” I said to Javi as I took my rod and peeped outside.People were running away from the dining. I saw Dan and her mother running towards me. “What happening?” I asked her standing at the door. She pushed me inside and closed the door behind her. She looked shocked. Holding her chest hard to calm down“The lady you came with, she turned into one of those things. She bit Daniel. It happened too fast I ran among the people to leave but things are crazy. They are fighting and biting each other”“What. Teacher Monica turned? But she wasn’t bit… wait…. She looked sick” I said the last part almo

Saving our lives
“I think we should do what we wanted at this moment. She will help shield us. It will be more effective.” Peter said all of a sudden. I turned and looked at him hard“What? Have I said anything wrong? It’s finding an opportunity and grasping it. We are in shit. If we don’t do anything, we will be dead.” He added. I could see where he was coming from. Things will be even worse as the pandemic prolonged.“Okay. Let’s be fast and careful.” I said to the ladies in the bathroom.“I am scared. I don’t think I can do it.” She said taking steps away from the door. We could hear Esther fighting the undead hard. Screaming. If we missed the opportunity, she would’ve done it for nothing.I can’t say I was not hoping for her to sacrifice for the big picture but I didn’t expect her to do it on her own“Go.” I said and led the way. I was ready for anything as lon
