At that moment, Caiden was already seated inside a Rolls-Royce, leaving Howard Hospital.
His phone suddenly rang, and to his surprise, it was Maelie calling.
Since their relationship had ended, Caiden saw no reason to respond.
However, the phone kept ringing repeatedly, as if it were something urgent.
With a slight frown, he eventually answered.
“Caiden, listen to me. Turn yourself in right now!” Maelie’s voice came through sharply, catching him off guard.
“You're in possession of the Black Unlimited Card, have you lost your mind? I don't know how you even managed to get it but have you thought of the legal consequences? You still have time to surrender yourself and the card. Don’t worry, with my influence in Louisiana, I’ll do everything I can to keep you out of prison!” Her tone carried both anger and disappointment.
At that moment, Caiden finally understood she believed he had stolen the card.
“You’re mistaken. I didn’t steal it,” he replied calmly, unwilling to elaborate further.
Maelie’s frustration grew. “Caiden, are you seriously still denying it? Nevan and the employees from Howard Hospital have already told me everything.” Her accusing tone made Caiden feel a chill.
“Maelie, is that really how you see me? You’d rather believe someone like Nevan than me?”
Maelie paused, her voice softening slightly. “I’m sorry if this hurts your pride, Caiden, but this is no small matter. This card is owned by the richest man in the world, my dad. How did you manage to get this from him?”
“Don’t you understand?” She stressed. “See….If don't confess on time, I can’t shield you from what is to come!”
Caiden let out a faint scoff at her misplaced confidence.
“So even now, you’re convinced I stole it?” Caiden let out a hint of mockery.
“Fine, believe whatever you want. Call the police if you like. I’m not afraid.”
“Caiden, why are you being so…”
Before she could finish, Caiden ended the call.
Maelie stared at her phone in disbelief, her lips slightly parted.
The Caiden she knew would never have hung up on her like that.
Never…
Not even once in the three years they lived together.
Not only that, he had rejected what she believed was sincere advice.
“Caiden, I never thought you could be this stubborn……and wicked,” she murmured, slowly thinking maybe he got this card somehow from her dad. She tried calling again. The phone was on voicemail.
“Hmm…..” She slapped her tight so hard in frustration.
Pete came to mind. Her dad's PA over there in London, the man who knew everything about him.
The moment Pete picked, she was already asking, “Please where's my dad? Why is he not picking his calls?”
“Ma'am?” Pete asked in shock. He had never heard Maelie this panicked even when she called in an emergency.
“Where's my dad?” Her pitch went high. “I've been trying to reach him but it's going to voicemail?”
“Mr. Logan is fine. He just left today for an urgent trip to return something. I guess he will respond to you when he lands.”
“Did he go with his black card?” Maelie snapped in quickly.
“I….. I can't really tell.” Pete stammered, Maelie’s heart stopped. There was a chaotic silence, one which rode her heart almost to an attack.
Pete sensed it. “You know I didn't go with Mr. Logan today, so can't tell.” He spoke in a dismissive tone.
Maelie paused in deep thoughts for a while. Her dad always walked around with three things. His phone, the Black Card and his PA. Even for short distances, why not then for a trip? What's wrong? What did he go to deliver?
“I'm sorry ma'am but I have to go now. I have a really pressing need.” Before Maelie could reply, he'd already cut the call.
Maelie’s jaw dropped. Her mind refreshed with memories of her accompanying her dad for business summits and he was always with that card. He used it during Auctions, purpose of luxury items which he loved when appropriate.
Panic and anger rushed through Maelie, she paced around the room, still thinking of the response Pete gave her.
“Something is definitely wrong.”
She pulled up her phone and called her dad again. It rang. The panic dropped a bit. “I'm on my way. We will talk soon.” Mr. Logan said, cutting the call off. It was so sudden, just like his PA did.
This doubled her doubt instead of curing it.
“On his way? Where to? Here?”
“Maelie, did you forget? Tonight is the Auction for the new Springville Garden Estate Apartments. Many elite buyers in Louisiana are set to come. Maybe that's what he's heading for. He has to be there.”
“Why didn't he tell me?”
It hit her mind quickly. His dad once told her he got the largest share here.
Being the Chief shareholder, either he comes in person or asks her to represent him. Already she got an invitation to the event.
“You’re right. You're right.”
“While waiting for him, don't you think we should send men after Caiden before he escapes?”
Maelie’s senses rang in high alert. “True!”
“It's even good if dad is coming here. We will catch him red-handed.”
Meanwhile, Caiden got into the Rolls-Royce. Those who saw him whispered. Caiden spared no look.
“Let’s go.” He said to his driver, Michael Vance.
“Yes, boss.”
As the Rolls-Royce was heading to his home at the Springville Estate, Michael turned toward Caiden. “Mr. Howard, should I handle this? Just give the word, and I can bring both her and her new man on their knees overnight. They’d disappear from Louisiana completely. They’re nothing but trash.”
And he meant it. To be a driver to someone like Caiden, he, himself was great. He knew about what happened to his boss even when Caiden chose to handle it independently.
Seated calmly in the back, Caiden replied, “My relationship with Maelie may be over, but I’m not someone who seeks petty revenge. That’s beneath us, Michael.”
He added, “By the way, Michael, you’re now the richest and most prominent staff. Try to leave behind some of those habits from your past. You don’t need to curse all the time.”
Michael chuckled awkwardly. “You’re right, boss. I’ll work on being more refined. But reaching your level of emotional tolerance? That’ll be difficult!”
Caiden smirked. Michael thought he was weak, not knowing he had his plans.
“Stop!” Caiden told Vance a few meters to arrive at the estate. “I want to go in unnoticed.” Driving in a limited model of Rolls Royce will surely get him noticed and Caiden didn't want to show off just yet. He was just transitioning.
Michael had no choice but to comply. Caiden waved at him to go. “I can take care of myself, go back to work.” Michael had other duties to attend to at the company. Caiden waited until he left, sighed and reached into the King's Block.
No one was in sight. He felt relieved his plans worked.
“Heyy, what are you doing there?” A deep, brash voice came from behind. Caiden turned to see a tall, bulky man in security verse with a baton in hand. Five others followed after him, all with bloodshot eyes like those high in drugs.

Chapter 33
The celebration of the relationship was done at Roman's house. Just Roman, Lena, Carlos and Zara. Roman wanted to make a toast to it and welcome Zara to the family officially. The next few days were good, everything followed the smoother path. Well, until a fine morning. A press story broke out from an anonymous source claiming Roman used political connections to secure the infrastructure deal unfairly. The heading was ghastly. “Roman secures infrastructure deals from frolicking rather than bidding.” The story went on to accuse Roman of being in a relationship with Elara, labelling it as the reason he got the job. Photos of him and Elara in the restaurant were also surfacing. The claims that he was cheating on his wife also surfaced and his image was slowly getting tarnished. The story was of major concern. It wasn't just a business story, but a public and moral one. Roman had always been seen as a moral person and this definitely made people question him. Even though the stor
Chapter 32
In the weeks after Edward Ashford’s arrest, Caiden experienced a silence unlike anything he had known since before the auction. The media moved on from scandal to something closer to praise, framing him as the doctor who had inherited a legacy, uncovered his mother’s truth, and helped bring down a decades-old criminal network. It was the sort of story journalists were quick to embrace, and for the first time, Caiden found he didn’t resist being at its center. But the stillness unsettled him. After so long in constant conflict, he had almost forgotten what it meant to live without it.“You need to relax,” Cecilia said one evening as they sat on the penthouse balcony, watching the sunset spread color across the sky. “The Consortium is finished. Ashford is in custody. The immediate threats are gone. You’re allowed to breathe again.”“There’s still his protégé,” Caiden said. “The woman who delivered the flash drive. We don’t know her identity, or what she’s really after.”“We do know she
Chapter 31
The following morning after the wedding, Caiden stirred before sunrise. Cecilia was still asleep beside him, one hand lightly resting on his chest, her breathing even and calm. He stayed still, watching the faint light of early morning slip through the curtains, his mind turning over everything that had already happened, and everything still ahead. On the nightstand lay the flash drive the unknown woman had delivered. Marcus had spent the night going through it, and a preliminary report was already waiting on Caiden’s phone. He hadn’t opened it yet. For a few hours, he had chosen to keep the war at a distance, just long enough to have one night that belonged entirely to them. Now the night has ended.Caiden eased himself out of bed as quietly as possible, careful not to disturb Cecilia. Despite his effort, she shifted anyway, she always seemed to notice.“Where are you going?” she asked, her voice still thick with sleep.“To go through Marcus’s report,” he said softly. “Go back to bed
Chapter 30
The wedding day came with clear skies and an unseasonably warm breeze. The rooftop garden had been completely transformed, like something out of a fairytale. Glass candles lined the walkways, soft light flickering against the evening air, while white and gold flowers covered every surface in carefully arranged abundance. Somewhere nearby, a string quartet played gently as guests settled into their seats, the music drifting through the open space.Michael had organized security with military-level precision. Every attendee was carefully screened, every supplier thoroughly checked. Plainclothes operatives were placed strategically across the hospital grounds, while FBI agents blended into the guest list. Commander Ellis had even brought in his team from London as a personal favor. If the Consortium intended to strike, they wouldn’t find a ceremony, they would find a heavily fortified stronghold.Caiden stood at the altar with Michael beside him as his best man. For the first time, ther
Chapter 29
The engagement was made public in a quiet way, a brief newspaper notice and an official statement from the hospital’s PR team. After months of intense media attention, Caiden and Cecilia had decided they wanted this announcement to remain personal and low-key.However, the news still spread quickly. Congratulations came in from all parts of Caiden’s circle. Evelyn Cho sent a large bouquet of flowers with a simple note that said, “Finally.” Marcus Webb dropped by Caiden’s office with a premium bottle of whiskey and a grin that seemed impossible to contain. From Dubai, Amir called to offer his blessings and even proposed hosting the wedding at one of his family’s palaces.Even Maelie sent a card. It was simple, handwritten, almost restrained: “Congratulations to you both. Wishing you every happiness.”Caiden read it once, then again, before quietly putting it away. The person she used to be in his life felt like a distant memory now, familiar, yet unreachable. They had both become diffe
Chapter 28
Michael found him the next morning, waiting outside his office with an expression that meant bad news."Edward Ashford is dead."Caiden stopped mid-stride. "How?""His body was found at an estate in Switzerland. Apparent heart attack. The Swiss authorities are calling it natural causes.""You don't believe that.""I don't believe in coincidence." Michael handed him a tablet with the Swiss police report. "He died three days ago, right after our press conference. Right after we released the evidence against him.""He knew we were coming for him. The stress—""Maybe. Or maybe someone else got to him first. Someone who didn't want him talking."Caiden stared at the report. Edward Ashford had been the architect of his mother's murder. The founder of the Consortium. The shadow that had hung over his family for thirty years. And now he was dead before Caiden could face him."There are others still out there," Michael continued. "The Consortium's leadership was never just one man. Ashford was
