Chapter 1:The possible decision

"My lord, the soldiers of the southern hill have almost gathered around the main city gate wall."The moment the report was delivered, the silence that followed back was deafening.

The ministers exchanged uneasy glances, each minister glaring blankly at the other as though they were in search of elusive answers on their faces.

Soon the frantic chatter began as panic swallowed the court already. If the west gate is brought down then the city was doomed.

Honestly, this day would have been avoided if the previous king had marched his army to battle against the Ice Nation. But he refused, finding peace in non-confrontation.

Lord May believed violence only fueled more hostility and led to more loss as bloodshed solved nothing at the end.But his deduction would have stood if the Ice nation never had harbored the thought of conquest.

During the time of May, the Ice nation was mischievous but still weak. Then, they lacked combat skill and army influence, they also lacked strategic martial acumen.

Now that May was gone, his only son Lord Chin is left with the monumental responsibility of taking care of the nation when its already crumbling.

Understanding the distinct loss of equilibrium within the Fire Nation, this presented the quintessential opportunity for the Ice Nation to utterly annihilate their weakened rival.

And they intended to exploit it.

"My lord, why do we not capitulate now to safeguard the lives of our populace?" Minister Zhou said, stepping forward, his voice was filled with grim resignation .

"We possess no viable path of egress, and in the event of any futile resistance or conflict, we are inevitably destined to endure immense tribulation. We are bound to loose."A multitude of voices readily acquiesced to the defeatist words of Minister Zhou, yet such a submissive recourse was never going to find harbor within the minds of Minister Laus and Army Commander Han.

"My lord, we still retain a glimmer of hope, although the primordial flame of our nation has been extinguished, we still possess sufficient time to defect to Damanu. You are royalty, my lord."Han immediately seconded the proposition.

Ever since the fateful period when the fire harvest was brought to its conclusion, the mystical essence of the Fire Nation had vanished entirely, forcing them to reside within a once-supernatural empire that was now rendered powerless, reducing them to the mundane existence of normal humans.

"Seriously, Minister Laus? Army Commander?"

The scorn got to land on the right spot.

" What is wrong, Minister Zhou? Is that not supposed to be our enduring tradition. Are you merely being pessimistic, or do you desire His Highness to commit a big mistake so that you may marshal your insurgent factions and establish a new royal clan?" Minister Laus vituperated, peering at him with profound suspicion.

Being within the treacherous confines of the royal court provided vastly more latitude for insidious corruption than any external assault orchestrated by an adversarial, supernaturally endowed royal clan.

"That is enough," Chin finally interjected and broke his silence. His voice was soft and tranquil, yet it simultaneously resonated with an absolute, immutable command.

His presence was truly majestic, for the young sovereign harbored an innate, razor-sharp intellect that the assembled ministers, even if combined, could never hope to match. They knew that.

Despite his youth, he governed the Fire Nation with an iron determination, yet he had never encountered the raw brutality of warfare notwithstanding his personal ambitions.

Today, he comprehended that he must confront the very thing he had perpetually dreaded.

Amidst the relentless vacillation of the bickering officials, he discerned that seeking salvation in Damanu remained their solitary path of egress.

"I believe it is finally time for the divine deities to execute justice. Damanu shall bring forth the resolution we seek, for its truth has long been sealed by the immutable corridors of history," he articulated. He spoke with an exquisite, soothing elegance capable of placating a fractured soul.

Nevertheless, the rigid expression etching Minister Zhou's countenance made it painfully obvious that he remained unconvinced, inwardly deeming the monarch's strategy an unacceptable gamble. So did many too.

"Damanu is just a fierce legend." Zhou paused.

"One that burns sovereigns alive, my lord. Why hazard such an unnecessary risk? I implore you, my lord! For the sake of the populace, please!"

Zhou prostrated himself upon the floor and his sycophants immediately followed suit, repetitively chanting, "Please, my lord, for the people."

"Will you desist, you blithering fools!" another voice bellowed in retaliation.

"You dare pressure His Majesty with such fallacies? Which kings were ever immolated alive? Spare me this unmitigated nonsense! Or do you perhaps mean its role in helping King Roku vanquish the evil of the northern kingdoms during his glorious epoch? He was alive less than a century ago, was he not? So what about it?!"

Meanwhile, what had initially appeared to be a trivial headache some two days prior was now metamorphosing into a lethal attack as It was completely hijacking Chin's focus away from the tumultuous court.

"Chin... Chin... Come, Chin..."It was a low whisper, softly reverberating within the caverns of his mind and leaving him feeling like he was being controlled.

In ancient epochs, such an ominous phenomenon was widely believed to be the sinister invocation of the Demon Lord, yet Chin steadfastly refused to succumb to that interpretation; unfortunately, the maddening voice refused to cease, just pushing him toward the brink of a lunacy that no one in the room had yet noticed.
