Ricardo Rodriguez was spending the rest of the night with his new girlfriend, celebrating his amazing past few months when his phone rang up.

"Why are you disturbing me?" He knew it was his friend, Doctor Lewis, but this was not the best time to call him. He was in the middle of such nice time, Teresa's titties bouncing on his lips. Now this nerd had come to ruin it.

"We have a problem." Lewis said through the phone.

"This problem so big it can't wait till tomorrow?" Ricardo moaned as Teresa began to blow him slowly.

"It is your sister." Lewis seemed to be whispering over the phone.

"What? She finally died?" Ricardo urged Teresa to go faster as he closed his eyes in pleasure.

"No. She actually recovered."

Ricardo's two eyes shot open in shock.

"What did you say?"

"Lyana recovered. And now she's awake."

With a violent push, Ricardo threw Teresa against the bed. Then he put on a robe and paced around the room in annoyance.

"How did this happen, Lewis? You had just one job!"

"It was all going well. I was sure she was going to die yesterday. Until one random guy came to give her some medicine and suddenly she recovered and woke up. It is not my fault."

"Not your fault? I paid you well to ensure she doesn't wake up, Lewis. What were you doing when this random guy came into the hospital to give drugs to your patient?!"

Ricardo's voice was getting deadlier now, and Lewis could only be grateful he was not in the same room with him.

"I tried to stop him, but he came with James Halton. There was nothing I could do."

Oh... James Halton again. Always standing in the way of Ricardo's plans.

"Well you have to do something now. She mustn't return home safe and sound, you hear me? If she does, I lose everything. And if I lose everything, I swear Lewis, I will make sure you do too!"

"Okay... I... I'll try my best..."

"Oh you have to. And I want to know everything about this 'random guy'."

"I'll see what I can find..."

The call ended as Ricardo threw his phone against the wall in rage, smashing it into pieces.

"What's going on, honey?" Teresa placed her hand into his, hoping he would calm down.

"Everything was going so well." He gritted his teeth. "Whoever did this shit, I'll make sure they pay!"

*********************

Adrian woke up before the morning alarm today. Actually, he could not sleep all night. He kept checking his account balance to be sure this wasn't just a dream. But it wasn't. Each time he checked, a million dollar was right there waiting for him.

"I... I'm rich?" He asked himself. This money came just after completing his first mission. He wondered how much more was waiting for him from the system.

Adrian thought about everything he went through the night before. The break up with Teresa. The race to save the life of Lyana Rodriguez, the sister of his enemy. It was surely a long night.

"Maybe it was all worth it afterall."

Coming off the bed, he decided to visit the bank today. But first he had lectures to take at the university. The day was starting to grow brighter.

Adrian lived in a ridiculously small single room apartment which had no private washroom. He had to share a washroom with other occupants of the block which meant he always had to wake up before everybody else to be able to get a bath. His co tenants were not the best people in the world, but not as bad as his landlady. They were not so rich or successful, but they always saw him as the blackest sheep of the herd. Rightfully so, he had the worst story to tell and despite working multiple jobs, his story had never seemed to improve.

"You look rather happy today." Mrs Huddersfield noted as Adrian made his way out. "You struck gold last night? Cos I heard some richer fellows used you to dig the soil."

She was his landlady, and she was used to making these kinds of comments at him.

"Tell me about it. I saw it all happen, he was tossed around by Ricardo's boys like a bag of crap." Billy laughed. He was the lead gossip of the neighborhood who never missed anything and he was the landlady's son.

But Adrian was not ready to let anyone ruin his mood. Afterall his life was finally turning around now. At this rate with the chosen heir system, he would soon get a new home of his own and will no longer be under their tyranny. So he decided to ignore them.

"Good morning to you too, Mrs Huddersfield." He walked past them and he could see landlady's face turn blue with shock.

"You... You can't walk out on the landlady like that..." Billy protested.

"H... How dare you?" Mrs Huddersfield spat aggressively. "I give you shelter even when you pay the lowest on these blocks. You're literally living in my house for free. How dare you walk away when I'm addressing you, you good for nothing beggar?"

As Adrian listened to her curse, he promised himself not to turn around. Just keep your eyes on the road, Adrian. Her voice would disappear soon enough. But it only got louder.

"You are such a brat, aren't ya? No wonder your mother abandoned you for all these years... What a joke!"

Adrian stopped for a second, his fist clenching hard. But he tried not to turn back. With a heavy heart, he made his way out of the building and took a cab with the last coin on him. Not to worry, he had a lot waiting for him in the bank.

As the car whistled along the road, Adrian only thought about his mother. It had been so many years. He didn't even remember what she looked like. All he knew was that she disappeared when he was a child after the death of his father. Why she did that, he would never know. But maybe now that he had a system, he could find the answer. He could find his mother again.

"System, are you there?" Adrian muttered under his breathe, making sure the cab driver didn't see him talking to himself.

"System activating. Yes, Adrian. What can I do to help?"

"Do you know anything about my mother? I need to find her."

"This information can not be revealed now. You have to reach the penultimate level."

The screen appeared. The penultimate level was printed in red, it was the Heir status. He still had to reach Healer and Master first. It was going to be a long journey, but Adrian was ready. As long as he would find mother.

Lyu sat alone on a hard plastic bench near his departure gate, a single suitcase resting against his leg, watching the departure board flicker through its endless rotation of cities and times without truly seeing any of it. His mind had drifted backward, unwillingly, to the room he was in just a few hours ago.Melissa's voice still echoed in his ears, cold and satisfied, delivering her ultimatum with the same casual cruelty she had always worn like perfume. You will do exactly as I ask, or your daughter dies. It really is that simple, Lyu. That was the way she made her threat just after the call ended in her room. Lyana had been captured, and only Lyu could save her now. The only way to do that was to obey Melissa's instructions. She had wanted someone dead. She had refused to name the target outright, only informing him that the man he needed to kill was currently in London, and that further instructions would reach him the moment he landed. It had unsettled him more than he cared to

  • Chapter Three Hundred Two

Melissa Rodriguez sat before her mirror, watching her own reflection age backward in her mind until she saw not the face of a chairwoman but the face of the young lady who had once stood in the grand hall, seconds away from having everything she had ever wanted. It had been her son's birthday, all those years ago, a celebration dressed up in gold and champagne, though the true occasion had never truly been only about her son at all. It had been about the envelope Sebastian Waters carried to the center of the room that evening, the way he had smiled at her with such genuine, undeserved warmth as he drew out the contract from within it, the pen he had pressed into her waiting hand. The entirety of Waters Holdings and Corporation, transferred fully into her name. She remembered the weight of that pen in her fingers, remembered how close she had come, how the ink had very nearly touched paper before everything collapsed around her."Stop!"James Halton's voice had cut through the celebrat

James Halton lowered his voice. "He is your husband?""Yes." The answer came easily. "And he is your boss. I guess it is not so over after all" A faint smirk touched her lips. The contradiction seemed to amuse her. James shook his head slowly. "What do you mean by that? I don't understand.""You understand perfectly.""No." He stood firm as she stepped closer. "I don't."She remained perfectly composed. James Halton's s jaw tightened as it dawned upon him. "No!" He said. "I will not do it.""Well, you have no choice." She responded. "I already paid you half of the money, you have to do the job. We have a deal.""Our deal was over the moment you tried to kill me".The woman said nothing. His words seemed to hold no meaning to her. James Halton looked toward the door through which Sebastian Waters had disappeared."He just stood here telling me how you're going to inherit everything if he dies."Her expression remained unreadable. "And that's exactly why it is the ripe time for him to t

The woman came toward the two men with an effortless grace, a smile resting naturally upon her lips as though the entire evening belonged to her.She extended her hand toward James Halton. James Halton only stared at it. For a moment, he did not move. Her hand remained suspended between them, delicate and perfectly manicured, waiting for his response."James," Sebastian Waters said cheerfully, completely unaware of the storm that had suddenly erupted behind the younger man's eyes. "Allow me to introduce you properly."Sebastian gestured toward the woman beside him."This is my wife."James Halton finally looked at her face and his heart seemed to stop."My wife," Sebastian repeated proudly. "And the mother of my son."The woman smiled. "I have heard a lot about you," she said.James Halton swallowed. Doubts tried to force their way in but he knew that she was the same woman.
