*Chapter Eighteen: The Summoner's Fall

Narrators pov

The Summoner recoiled, its form flickering like a candle in a storm. The Shard of Light blazed in Soren's hand, gold cutting hard through the library's dark.

"You cannot hurt me with that," the Summoner said, but its voice had lost something. The certainty was gone.

Soren swung again. The light connected and the Summoner dissolved into mist, reforming twenty feet back.

The certainty was gone.Soren swung again. The light connected and the Summoner dissolved into mist, reforming twenty feet back."You're retreating," Soren said, advancing. "That's new.""I'm adjusting.""Sure." He kept moving. "Call it whatever helps."Piper moved wide on his left, silver light already gathering in her palms. The Summoner tracked Soren — the obvious threat, the one with the weapon — and didn't see her until she drove both hands forward and the silver hit its chest like a wave. The scream it made wasn't cold this time. It was old and raw and genuinely hurt."Now!" Piper shouted.Soren drove the Shard in.The light detonated. The Summoner's essence rushed into him — ancient, co

  • The Weight of Eternity

*Chapter Seventeen: The Weight of EternityNarrators pov The library stayed quiet. The candles threw long shadows across the shelves. Neither of them moved."Eternity," Soren said finally. "Trapped with that thing. Forever.""It is the only way," the Keeper said. "The Hungerer is not a creature that can be killed. It is a wound in reality. The only option is permanent containment."Piper's voice came out small. "I can't do it. I can't spend forever in the dark."Soren looked at her. Pale face, wide eyes. Everything she'd survived to get here, and now this was the ask."I know," he said."But if we don't—" Her voice cracked. "Everyone dies. Everything. Every person who ever had a chance at something good." She pressed her eyes shut. "So I'll do it. I'll sacrifice myself. For all of them.""We're not deciding that yet." Soren turned to the Keeper. "There has to be something else. Another option."The Whispers stirred. *Use us. Use the Shard. We can give you power the Shadow Luna can't

  • The Union of Soul

*Chapter Sixteen: The Union of SoulNarrators pov The light consumed everything.Piper's hand was warm in his and then the warmth spread — fast, total, flooding through him like something breaking open. Not painful. Not at first. Like every part of him was finally waking up after years of being numb. Then the pain came. Not his body. Deeper. The pain of his edges dissolving, of the boundaries that made him Soren Vale coming apart at the seams. Piper's memories hit him without warning.A small house with a garden. A mother who smelled like lavender. The first time Piper held a stethoscope. The first time a patient died in her hands and she couldn't do anything but be there. Her cancer — the diagnosis, the treatments, the face in the mirror she stopped recognizing. The relief of remission. The horror when the Summoner took her anyway. And then the boy. Brown hair, green eyes, a leather jacket with patches. The way he begged. The way she killed him. The way she'd been carrying it ever s

  • The Keeper's Truth

Chapter Fifteen: The Keeper's TruthNarrators pov Soren didn't sit. He stood in front of the desk with his hand still near the dagger and waited."Shadow Luna," he said. "What is that?""A title. A destiny. A curse." The Keeper folded his hands. "Depending on how you look at it." He gestured to the chairs. "Sit. This will take time.""I've been tricked before. The Summoner. The Warden. Give me a reason to trust you.""I'm bound to this library. I can't leave it, can't interfere with the Game directly. I can only share what I know." The Keeper's eyes were steady. "I have nothing to gain from lying to you."Piper tugged Soren's sleeve. He looked at her. She nodded toward the chairs. He sat. She sat beside him and found his hand. The Keeper leaned back. "Before the Game existed. Before the Summoner. Before the Hungerer was imprisoned — there was a war. Fought by beings that had no names, that existed before names were invented. The Hungerer was one of them. It devoured worlds, realities

  • The Depths

Chapter Fourteen: The DepthsNarrators pov The cold consumed him whole.Soren plunged into black water, the ice closing over his head. His lungs seized. His limbs went useless almost immediately — the cold too deep and too fast for his body to fight. He couldn't feel his hands. Couldn't feel anything except the pressure of the water and Piper's fingers still locked in his.He held on.She was falling with him, eyes wide, mouth open in a silent scream. He pulled her closer and she grabbed his arm and they sank together into the dark.Things moved in the depths. He caught them at the edge of his vision — shapes with too many limbs, too many eyes, drifting upward toward them with a patient, unhurried hunger.*Let her go,* the Whispers said. *She's dragging you down. You'll both die.*He tightened his grip.*She's already gone, Soren. You're holding a corpse.*He ignored them and pulled her in, wrapping both arms around her. Her body was ice against his chest. But he could feel her heart

Piper gasped beside him and pulled her arms tight around herself. He looked out. Endless white in every direction — flat, featureless snow under a gray sky that pressed down like a lid. No sun. No wind. No sound at all.The Whispers stirred. *A place of stillness. A place of surrender.*"Great," Soren muttered.Piper looked at him. "What did they say?""Nothing useful. Come on."They walked. The snow crunched under their boots and that was the only sound in the world. Soren's hands went numb first, then his face. Piper's teeth were chattering so hard she'd stopped trying to talk.He noticed the shapes before she did. Dark outlines in the white distance."Piper."She saw them. Her breath caught.Bodies. Frozen solid, dozens of them, then hundreds as they got closer. Players — preserved in the ice where they had stopped. Some with
