The receptionist froze as she watched the manager nervously apologize to the random guy wearing casuals. She almost felt like she was hallucinating.

“What’s wrong, sir?” she asked in confusion. “Why are you apologizing to this nobody?”

The manager looked up and stared daggers at the receptionist standing behind the counter. “Shut your mouth before I pull out your tongue, you stupid imbecile! Do you even know who he is? Just look at that card on the table! It’s an Obsidian Pass that’s only offered to the most prestigious members of the Emerald Club. How many damn times do I need to explain this to you?” he shouted.

“Could you just show me to my room?” Alex intervened, hardly bothering to get involved in this pointless scuffle.

The manager quickly turned around and started apologizing again.

“I am really sorry, sir. I should have been here to receive you. Please forgive me just this once. I swear I will make it up to you!”

The dumbfounded receptionist slowly lifted the black card lying on the table and lowered her gaze. On closer scrutiny, she saw the code : A001 printed in red, meaning this card was only meant for the club’s most esteemed member, and this person had unrestricted access to all four floors.

Realizing her mistake, the receptionist immediately dropped the card and fell to her knees.

“I…didn’t see it. Please don’t file a complaint. I am sorry!” she pleaded, lowering her head.

But the manager wasn’t ready to hear any excuses. “You’re fired! We don’t need an incompetent idiot sitting here! Get out right now!” he yelled, showing her the door.

As the whimpering receptionist was dragged away by two female bouncers, the manager wiped the sweat from his forehead and changed his tone at once.

“I apologize you had to go through that. Please follow me, and I will take you to your room right away.”

Alex picked up his card and put it in his pocket before following the manager as he led him across the hallway and entered the elevator.

When they arrived on the third floor, Alex checked his phone and saw a text from Dr. Lucy. She said she had a surprise for him and would be reaching in ten minutes.

“I will wait here for now. I am expecting a friend,” he told the manager.

The manager nodded like a loyal butler and led Alex to one of their premium tables overlooking the southern window.

“Please make yourself comfortable. I will get your room ready for you. If you need anything, just press the buzzer.”

Once the manager left, Alex stretched himself out on the mahogany chair and looked at his watch again. It was already eight, and Lucy was still running late.

Just then, Alex heard a couple of familiar voices in the background, and it instantly made him stiffen up and roll his eyes.

“Damn it. Not those fools again,” he sighed.

Felicia’s loud, high-pitched laughter jarred his ear as she laughed at one of Robert’s lame jokes.

“Oh, you’re so funny!” she giggled. “I haven’t had such a good laugh in years!”

“Get used to it, darling. I am not just a handsome face but quite witty as well,” Robert replied with his usual boast.

Felicia was still giggling when her eyes fell on Alex. The smile instantly vanished from her face as she saw him sitting at one of the premium tables all by himself.

She couldn’t believe Alex had the audacity to enter such an expensive restaurant, and she immediately concluded that he must have used the Rashford family name to gain access to this place.

“Just what on earth are you doing here, Alex?” she barked, raising her voice a pitch higher. “Did you tell them that you are my husband? How shameful of you to still keep using my name even though I have already filed for a divorce.”

“I booked this table. You have no right to be here, you mangy cur,” Robert scoffed.

Alex sighed in frustration and muttered in a cold voice, “I am a guest here. This isn’t your table.”

Immediately, Felicia and Robert burst into peals of mocking laughter.

“Does this idiot really think he can just stroll into Neon Heights and pretend he is welcome at the table?” Robert jeered, staring at Alex with a wide grin on his face.

Felicia shook her head and joined in the mockery. “This is really so sad. I think he just wants to enjoy his last night as a member of the Rashford family. After all, he will probably go back to begging on the streets once the divorce is finalized.”

Just as Alex turned around to respond, the elegant and graceful beauty, Dr. Lucy Winchester, arrived. Clutching her silver-rimmed purse, she walked up to Alex’s table.

Seeing that Alex was already busy talking to the two, Dr. Lucy politely asked, “Am I interrupting something? Are they friends of yours?”

“Hardly,” Alex sighed in response and stood up to pull a chair for her.

Felicia’s eyes widened as she saw the beautiful red-headed lady blushing and smiling at Alex. She couldn’t believe that a penniless nobody like him had managed to become friends with such a charming woman.

Not only was Dr. Lucy far younger than Felicia, but also exceedingly beautiful. It was the worst mismatch she could think of, but Dr. Lucy seemed overjoyed to be with him.

“You penniless dog. I can’t believe you trapped another woman so quickly,” Felicia muttered, overwhelmed with jealousy.

Alex remained calm. He had already endured enough humiliation for two years to be bothered by a few rude words from a stranger.Dr. Lucy, however, became furious. She was not going to stand there and let a little fry like Blake insult her mentor.“You are crossing your limits, Blake. Know your place!” she snapped back, snubbing him. “The man standing before you is the one they call the Miracle Maker. He can cure every known disease and even teach a cripple how to walk.”Blake, however, refused to believe a single word. He kept staring at Alex with suspicious eyes.Just then, a beautiful young lady entered the room. Her youthful eyes still had the spark of life in them, unlike the dreary eyes of the others in the room. She was none other than Elizabeth Warrington, the oldest daughter of Josiah Warrington, and Blake was her estranged cousin.Since Josiah Warrington was Edgar Warrington’s only surviving son, he was next in line to get all their estates and factories, but Blake and his f

Robert’s legs trembled in fear as he heard the stern warning from the other end of the line. He realized he had made a terrible mistake by meddling with the men in black. An A-tier family could destroy not just his reputation, but also ruin his entire family with a single word. Only a fool would be stupid enough to challenge them, and Robert had done the unthinkable by disrespecting their authority. The brief conversation with the governor’s secretary gave Robert a much-needed reality check, and he fell completely silent as he rued his mistake. Felicia, however, wasn’t ready to let it go.“What happened? Who did you call?” she kept probing Robert, nagging him to act. “Do something instead of just standing there. Those fools need to be punished for blocking our path! You should have them dragged by their collars and—” Whack!A tight slap landed on Felicia’s right cheek, forcing her to shudder back.“Just shut up already!” Robert yelled in a fit of rage, still holding his raised hand

Alex handed the signed divorce agreement to Dr. Lucy and asked her to keep it safe. This angered Felicia even more as she thought she finally understood what was happening. “So, you’re really with her now. That must be the reason you can sign the divorce papers so easily,” she grumbled, staring daggers at him. “You are nothing but a cheat! All you can do is trap gullible women to support your lifestyle, you pathetic scum!”Alex put the pen back in his pocket and replied coldly, “Not everyone is like you, Felicia. Dr. Lucy is actually a really good friend. She has been a tremendous help to me when I was at my lowest. You probably would not understand.”Dr. Lucy smiled and looked at Felicia. “If Mr. Verlaine wanted me, I would have agreed without a second thought. You are really unlucky to have lost someone like him.”Robert immediately intervened to defend Felicia’s honor.“Alex was always a dumb loser, but you should have known better. I thought you had enough sense in you not to st

  • 8. A final reunion

Jakob had been admitted in this hospital for nearly a year now, and every nurse and every doctor had always done their best to cater to Mrs. Rashford's demands. But today, not a single hospital staff member intervened on their behalf. Furious at being harassed by a few glorified security guards in suits, Mrs. Rashford poured all her anger on Felicia.“You really are a useless daughter!” she rebuked with bitterness in her voice. “I swear it’s no use to be the CEO of the city’s third most popular cosmetic brand if you can’t even help your own brother.”“I am trying my best—”“I don’t need your excuses!” Mrs. Rashford snapped back at her. “Just call Robert and ask him to deal with this nonsense. I am sure he can handle these idiots better than you.”Felicia didn’t dare to talk back but immediately dialed Robert’s number. The phone rang for a whole minute, but even after the third try, he didn’t answer.Disappointed and distraught with herself, Felicia looked up at her mother timidly. “I

After a great deal of contemplation, Alex finally decided to take his chances.“Alright, I will treat your father,” he said, much to the caller’s relief.“Thank the heavens!” the voice on the other end exclaimed, exhaling the anxious breath he had been holding for so long. “You will be adequately compensated, Mr. Verlaine. I promise you that.”Alex, however, had no interest in the man’s money. All he wanted to know was his real identity and how someone like him had managed to obtain his number.“Before I decide to visit your father, I need to know who I’m talking to and just how you got hold of my number.”“My name is Josiah Warrington. I’m the only male heir of the Warrington bloodline. We are an A-tier family based in the provincial capital of Lichtenstein,” the voice from the other end revealed. “My friends at the City Council helped me track down your number. They said you were the only one who could help us.”Even after hearing everything, Alex couldn’t recognize the family as th

“How dare you!” Felicia snapped at Alex. “Just who do you think you are?”The manager immediately intervened. Snapping his fingers, he called for the guards. “Security! Please escort these two out of the restaurant’s premises and ensure they don’t return.”At once, two female bouncers dressed in buttoned black shirts grabbed Felicia by her arms while another burly bald guard caught hold of Robert.“I am Felicia Rashford! The CEO of Femme Fatale!” Felicia yelled, trying to wrench free. “You have no idea who you are messing with!”“Don’t touch my suit. It’s freshly dry-cleaned!” Robert protested. But the guards didn’t listen to a single one of their pleas and dragged the pair out of the restaurant before kicking them out onto the streets.Enraged by the mistreatment, Felicia muttered angrily and cursed the manager.
