The door to apartment 4C was hanging from one hinge.
Ethan took the stairs three at a time and burst inside. The tiny living room had been torn apart. The couch was flipped, Lily's schoolbooks were scattered across the floor, and their mother's framed photo lay face down in a spray of broken glass.
"Lily!"
No answer.
He checked the bedroom. The bathroom. The narrow closet where she used to hide during thunderstorms when she was little. Empty. Empty. Empty.
On the kitchen floor, beside an overturned chair, lay her phone, its screen cracked into a spiderweb.
It buzzed in his hand the moment he picked it up. A message from an unknown number. A photo.
Lily in the back of a white van, her wrists bound with a zip tie, her face wet with tears. Jace Miller grinning beside her, his arm draped around her shoulders like they were old friends.
Then a second message.
Unknown: Old cannery, Pier 9. Bring $5,000 for Derek's nose. Or don't, and she learns some manners. Clock's ticking, human.
[5:58... 5:57...]
Pier 9 was on the other side of the river.
There was no way. Not on his scooter. Not in six minutes. He thought about calling the police and remembered Derek's words in the alley: my father owns half the officers in this city. He thought about calling Hale Estate, the house his family had served for most of his life, and almost laughed. Mrs. Hale had watched Derek humiliate him tonight and smiled. Her people would sooner help Derek bury him.
There was no one. There had never been anyone. Only him.
Ethan was already running.
***
He didn't remember much of the ride. He remembered the strange clarity that came over him on the bridge: his breathing slowing instead of quickening, the world sharpening at the edges, his hands steering through traffic as if they knew exactly where every gap would open a second before it did.
As if some part of him had done this before. Hunted before.
[1:31... 1:30...]
The old cannery loomed at the end of the pier, dark and rusted, its windows broken. A white van was parked outside.
Ethan dumped the scooter and kicked the side door open.
Inside, moonlight fell through holes in the roof onto concrete and rotting conveyor belts. Lily sat on a crate in the middle of the floor, wrists still bound, her pajamas soaked at the knees. Jace leaned against a pillar beside her, flicking a lighter on and off. A second wolf, Brent, sat on a stack of pallets, scrolling on his phone.
Both of them looked up. Both of them grinned.
"Look at that," Jace said. "He actually came. You owe me twenty bucks, Brent."
"Ethan!" Lily cried. "Run! They're going to—"
Jace's hand clamped over her mouth.
"Let her go," Ethan said.
"Sure." Jace held out his free hand, palm up. "Five grand."
"I don't have it."
"Then we'll take it out of you." Jace's eyes flared amber. His fingers lengthened into claws with a wet crackle. "Again. Derek said to make it hurt this time."
[0:47... 0:46...]
Brent moved first.
He came off the pallets fast, half shifted, swinging a fist the size of a brick at Ethan's head.
Every human who worked for the wolves knew the rule: a werewolf was three times stronger and three times faster than any person. A human who fought a wolf didn't lose. He died.
But for the first time in his life, Ethan saw it coming.
The world slowed. He saw the muscles bunch in Brent's shoulder before he threw the punch. He saw his weight shift onto his front foot. He saw the exact path of the swing, wide and arrogant, the swing of someone who had never had to fight anyone who could fight back.
Ethan stepped inside it.
His body knew what to do before his mind did. He turned his shoulder, let the fist pass a hair's width from his ear, and drove his own fist into Brent's exposed ribs.
Something cracked. This time, it wasn't Ethan.
Brent folded with a choked wheeze and dropped.
"What the—" Jace shoved Lily aside and lunged.
He was smarter than Brent. He didn't swing. He charged low, claws out, trying to take Ethan to the ground and tear him open there.
Ethan pivoted, caught Jace's wrist, and used the wolf's own momentum against him. He twisted and threw him over his hip. Jace crashed into a rusted conveyor belt with a clang that echoed through the cannery like a gong.
[0:19... 0:18...]
Jace was up again in a heartbeat, snarling, blood on his teeth. But he didn't charge Ethan this time.
He went for Lily.
He grabbed her by the hair and yanked her up off the crate, pressing his claws against her throat. Lily froze, eyes wide.
"Back off!" Jace shouted. "One more step and I swear—"
Ethan didn't step.
He threw the only thing in reach: a rusted steel bolt the size of his thumb, lying on the conveyor belt beside him. He didn't aim. He didn't think. His arm simply moved, quick and precise, the way it had moved a thousand times in a life he couldn't remember.
The bolt struck Jace dead center between the eyes.
His head snapped back. His claws slipped from Lily's throat. And before he could recover, Ethan was there, his fist slamming into Jace's jaw with a force that lifted the werewolf off his feet.
Jace hit the concrete and didn't get up.
[0:03... 0:02...]
Ethan caught his sister as she stumbled forward and pulled her into his arms.
[Mission complete.]
***
For a long moment, neither of them moved. Lily was shaking so hard her teeth chattered. Ethan used one of Jace's own claws, still half extended, to slice through the zip tie on her wrists.
"How did you—" she stammered. "Ethan, how did you do that? You were like a real wolf. Better than a real wolf."
"Adrenaline," he said, holding her tight. "Brothers get superpowers when their sisters are in trouble. It's science."
She laughed through her tears and punched his arm. It was the best sound he had ever heard.
Then her face crumpled, and she buried it in his chest.
"There was blood on your shirt," she whispered. "So much blood. When they kicked the door in, they said you were already dead. They said Derek finished you in an alley." Her fingers twisted in his ruined shirt. "Don't ever make me think that again. Promise me."
Ethan closed his eyes and held her.
"I promise," he said.
Behind them, Brent was trying to crawl toward the door. Ethan let go of Lily, walked over, and crouched beside him, the way Derek had crouched beside him in the alley.
"Give Derek a message," he said quietly. "If anyone touches my family again, I won't stop at ribs."
Brent stared up at him with real fear in his eyes. He nodded frantically, dragged Jace onto his shoulder, and fled into the night.
Something buzzed on the concrete. Jace's phone, lying face up where it had fallen from his pocket.
A video call. Still connected.
Ethan picked it up. On the cracked screen, a swollen, bandaged face stared back at him from a leather armchair in the Reed mansion. Derek. He had been watching the whole thing, a glass of whiskey frozen halfway to his lips.
For a second, neither of them spoke.
"You," Derek finally breathed. "What the hell are you?"
Ethan looked at him. Really looked. At the expensive bandage, the shaking hand, the fear he was trying so hard to hide behind his anger. For twenty years, this face had been the scariest thing in Ethan's world.
It didn't look scary anymore.
"Next time," Ethan said, "come yourself."
He ended the call and dropped the phone into a puddle of seawater.

[Seal 1 progress: 50%.]
The world exploded.
Suddenly Ethan could hear everything. Waves slapping against the pier. A ship's horn miles out on the water. Lily's heartbeat a few steps behind him, fast and frightened, slowly calming. He could smell rust, salt, motor oil, Brent's cheap cologne.
And something else. Faint. Drifting through the broken windows on the night wind.
Roses. And cold rain.
Ethan's head snapped up.
On the roof of the warehouse across the pier, for a single heartbeat, he saw a figure silhouetted against the moon. A woman in a long black coat.
With silver hair.
He blinked.
The rooftop was empty.

The System panel flickered, as though it wanted to say something. Then, quietly, it closed on its own.

The uniform still smelled like his father.Ethan found it in the back of the estate's uniform closet on Monday morning, hanging in a plastic bag with a faded name tag pinned to the chest: D. COLE. Darkness.Ethan kept his eyes shut and listened. He heard the whistle of claws cutting through the air toward his throat. Chapter 13: Fight Night
The Pit had never been this full.Five hundred werewolves packed the old rail tunnel, standing on crates, hanging from the rusted support beams, pressed so tightly against the cage that the chain-link bowed inward. The air was hot and thick with sweat and beer and the electric smell of wolves on the edge of shifting. Someone had hung a banner from the ceiling, painted in red: REED vs. THE HUMAN.Betting slips fluttered everywhere. The odds on the board read DEREK REED 1:8. Chapter 12: Redline
Selene. The vial was the color of fresh blood. It sat in a padded steel case on Victoria's desk, glowing faintly under the lamp. A label on the side read REDLINE — PROTOTYPE 7 — HALE BIOSCIENCES."Isn't it pretty?" Victoria said.Selene stood by the window, hands folded behind her back. "What does it do?""For about ten minutes, it makes a wolf three times stronger than he has any right to be. Faster. Angrier. Pain stops meaning anything." Victoria lifted the vial and turned it in the light. "After ten minutes, the heart usually gives out. We're still working on that part.""And you're giving it to Derek Reed.""Marcus asked very nicely." Victoria smiled. "He's terrified his son will lose to a human in front of the whole city. It would be the end of the Reed name. So I offered him a little help."Selene kept her voice perfectly flat. "You bet against Derek.""I did." Victoria set the vial back in the case and closed the lid with a soft click. "And I'll probably lose. Unless the Cole b

Four days until the fight."Cole. You're driving tonight."Mr. Graves dropped a set of keys into Ethan's palm at the end of his shift. They belonged to the black armored sedan at the far end of the security garage, the one nobody was allowed to touch."Who am I driving?"Graves's mouth thinned. "Ms. Vale. Eleven o'clock.
