The morning sun failed to break through the iron-grey sky over Hell University. Heavy fog clung to the gothic spires, carrying the bitter scent of ozone and wet stone.
Inside the South Wing suite, the air was silent save for the crackle of the hearth.
Declan sat on the edge of a leather sofa, his palm freshly wrapped in clean white bandages. Across from him, Gideon paced like a caged beast, his claws extending and retracting with a sharp, metallic clicking sound.
"Tomorrow night is the mid-term Academy Assembly," Gideon growled, his voice vibrating with suppressed hybrid rage. "Every student, elder, and faculty member will be packed into the Grand Auditorium. If Hale detonates the remaining four nodes during the headmaster's address—"
"It will trigger a mass blood sacrifice," Selene interrupted softly. She sat at the oak table, her fingers tracing glowing silver runes onto a parchment map of the catacombs. Her dark eyes were clouded with tragic foresight. "The spatial barrier separating the auditorium from the catacombs is paper-thin. When the nodes overload, the First Hybrid’s miasma will flood the hall, driving every vampire and werewolf into an unspeakable frenzy."
Briar leaned against the mantelpiece, her silver-blonde hair pulled back into a tight braid. "And the humans? What happens to the human students during a supernatural frenzy?"
Selene didn't answer. She didn't need to.
Declan squeezed his bandaged fist, his knuckles turning white. "Hale doesn't care about human lives. He just wants the massacre so the Global Hunter Council has an excuse to deploy full military force and erase the school."
"He won't get his massacre," Rowan spoke from the window alcove.
He turned around, his dark grey uniform pristine, his demeanor calm and unbothered despite the threat hanging over them. But beneath that quiet exterior, his eyes flashed with an inner, golden embers—a subtle sign of the Monarch system operating within his veins.

"Rowan," Briar said, looking at him intently. "Hale has already gone underground. He’s guarded by whatever executioners and hunter cells he has left. We can't just storm all four nodes at once before the assembly tomorrow."
"We don't need to storm all four," Rowan replied smoothly. He walked over to Selene's map, placing his index finger on the central intersection where all four subterranean mana lines converged. "Hale built a parallel network to bypass Node 5 after Declan closed it. But to synchronize the remaining four nodes for the assembly, he has to manually activate the Primary Core Conduit located in the Sub-Catacombs."
Gideon paused his pacing, his amber eyes locking onto Rowan. "The Sub-Catacombs? That's right outside Adrian Crowe's prison chamber."
"Exactly," Rowan said. "Hale wants us to chase him down there. He expects us to bring the full weight of our group so he can trap us in the crossfire when the seals break."
"Then what's the plan?" Declan asked, standing up straight. "We can't just let him flip the switch."
"We split his focus," Rowan commanded, his voice carrying the natural authority of a Sovereign. "Briar, you and Gideon will take point in the Grand Auditorium during tomorrow's assembly. Work with the wolf packs and the neutral vampire houses. Keep the students calm and establish a defensive perimeter around the human dorms."
"You want us off the frontline?" Gideon bristled, his fangs lengthening. "Rowan, I'm your heavy hit! You're going into the deep catacombs against a High Commander and you want me playing security guard?"
"I need you guarding our back, Gideon," Rowan said, stepping directly in front of the hybrid. He laid a hand on Gideon’s shoulder, letting a micro-pulse of Monarch aura settle the violent instincts surging in Gideon's blood. "If Hale manages to send a fraction of that miasma upward, you are the only one strong enough to hold the line and keep the students from slaughtering each other."
Gideon swallowed hard, feeling the undeniable weight of Rowan's aura. His shoulders dropped slightly, his golden eyes steadying. "...Fine. But if you don't come back up, I'm tearing the entire catacomb down after you."
"A fair bargain," Rowan hummed faintly. He turned to Selene and Declan. "Selene, you will monitor the ley-line fluctuations from my private lab. Use the blood wards we established last night to dampen any energy spikes."
"And me?" Declan asked, taking a step forward. "I'm not sitting in a dorm room while you fight the man who used me."
Rowan looked at Declan, seeing the subtle golden glint of awakened hunter energy lingering around the young man's hands.
"You're coming with me, Declan," Rowan said. "Hale built those locks using Mercer hunter magic. When we reach the Primary Conduit, I need your blood to seal the core permanently."
Night fell rapidly over Hell University. By 8:00 PM, the atmosphere on campus was suffocatingly tense. Heavy rain turned into a freezing drizzle, coating the stone walkways in a layer of slick ice.
While the rest of the student body prepared for the prestigious mid-term assembly, two figures moved swiftly beneath the shadow of the central bell tower.
Rowan and Declan stood before a circular stone trapdoor buried deep beneath the root system of an ancient oak tree—the secret service entrance to the Sub-Catacombs.
"Once we step down here," Rowan warned, his voice low, "we enter a domain where the university's wardens have no eyes. Hale will have set traps, automated defense arrays, and whatever silver-trained hunters he has left."
Declan pulled a heavy silver hunting knife from his belt—a weapon he had retrieved from the fallen Executioners in the library. "Let him. I owe him a performance review."
Rowan let out a soft, sharp exhale that almost resembled a smile. He placed his hand against the stone trapdoor.
[Skill Activated: Absolute Blood Pressure (Level 2)]
The stone lock shattered internally, grinding open with a heavy thud. A thick, dark crimson fog rose from the black abyss below, carrying an overwhelming pressure that made the grass around the trapdoor instantly wither and die.

Rowan’s eyes ignited into brilliant crimson flame, illuminating the narrow stone steps leading down into the darkness.
"Stay close, Declan," Rowan said, stepping into the abyss. "The game is ending tonight."
They descended deep into the earth. The air grew so cold that their breath turned to thick white mist. The walls were no longer smooth granite; they were carved from dark, blood-absorbent obsidian, covered in ancient runes that pulsed with an erratic, violet light.
Ten minutes into the descent, the spiral staircase opened into a vast, cavernous hall supported by massive stone pillars. The floor was submerged in an inch of dark, stagnant water that reflected the violet glow of the wall runes.
SPLASH.
Rowan stopped dead in his tracks, raising a hand.

From behind the obsidian pillars, twelve figures stepped into the shallow water.
They weren't human hunters. They were supernaturals—high-tier vampire nobles and rogue werewolf mercenaries—their eyes glowing with a unnatural, milky-purple film. Black collars studded with glowing silver runes were clamped tightly around their necks.
"Thralls..." Declan whispered in horror. "He's controlling supernatural students with hunter collars!"
"Not just students," Rowan said, his gaze locking onto the figure standing at the front of the thrall squad.
It was Julian Vance. His pale face was twisted in a silent, agonizing grimace, his eyes completely milky-purple, blood dripping from his ears as the collar on his neck forced his body to move against his will.
In Julian's right hand was a massive, dark-steel greatsword pulsing with corrupted energy.
"Rowan..." Julian choked out, his voice fighting through the collar's mental override for a brief second. "Kill... kill me... I can't... control it..."
From the dark corridor behind the thralls, Professor Hale's voice echoed through hidden acoustic runes built into the walls:
"Welcome to the lower depths, Rowan," Hale’s voice mocked, cold and echoing. "You forced my hand, so I decided to test my new control collars on your fellow classmates. To reach me, you will have to slaughter the very peers you claim to protect. Show me how a 'peaceful' Monarch handles a room full of innocent meat."
Julian’s body jerked violently as the collar flared with dark purple light, forcing him to raise his greatsword and point it directly at Rowan's throat.
The twelve thralls charged simultaneously across the splashing water, their weapons raised in a lethal, synchronized strike.
Declan drew his silver knife, stepping into a defensive stance beside Rowan. "Rowan! How do we free them without snapping their necks?!"
Rowan didn't draw a weapon. He took a single, heavy step forward into the splashing water, his crimson eyes flashing with absolute, unyielding authority.
[Skill Activated: Sovereign Command (Level 1)]
[Targeting: 12 Control Collars (Vascular/Mana Override)]
"KNEEL!" Rowan’s voice detonated across the cavernous hall like a shockwave of thunder.
The acoustic weight of the command didn't hit their ears—it hit their blood.
BOOM!
The splashing water blasted outward in a perfect 360-degree ring. All twelve charging thralls, including Julian Vance, froze mid-stride as the internal pressure in their veins completely countered the kinetic force driving them forward.
CRACK! CRACK! CRACK!
The delicate silver control collars around their necks couldn't handle the sudden, massive spike of internal Monarch pressure. One by one, the twelve collars exploded into showers of harmless silver sparks.
The milky-purple film vanished from Julian's eyes. He gasped frantically, dropping his heavy greatsword as he collapsed onto his hands and knees in the shallow water, weeping from sheer relief and exhaustion. The other eleven students collapsed around him, unconscious but alive.
Rowan lowered his hand, his breathing steady, his face completely calm.

Rowan didn't even look at the fallen students as he walked past them toward the dark archway leading to the Primary Conduit.
"Declan," Rowan spoke quietly as he passed Julian. "Leave them a recovery flare so Gideon can haul them up."
Declan quickly pulled a red signal flare from his satchel, cracked it, and set it on a dry stone ledge before sprinting to catch up with Rowan.
As they stepped through the final archway, the air pressure dropped so violently that their ears popped.
Ahead lay the subterranean heart of Hell University—a massive, floating stone platform suspended over a bottomless abyss of swirling, violet miasma. In the center of the platform stood Professor Victor Hale, his hands resting upon a glowing, dark-crystal altar that pulsed in sync with a terrifying, colossal sarcophagus bound in massive silver chains hanging directly in the center of the pit.
Hale turned around slowly, his eyes wide with fanatical madness, staring at Rowan.
"You really are a monster, aren't you, Rowan Hawthorne?" Hale laughed hysterically over the booming pulse of the subterranean core. "You saved them! But you're too late! The core is primed!"
Hale slammed his hand onto the altar.
CRACK!
A massive fissure split the stone platform, and the ancient silver chains holding the colossal sarcophagus began to snap one by one.
