Chapter 1

The morning lights reflected across the glass windows, jerking Jace Winston from

his slumber. It was 7 am, and he was still slouched on the L sofa chair.

His overdosing was associated with him coming back home late last night.

He left the house yesterday as early as possible to go search for a job. Unfortunately, he found none. No company seems to be hiring. He desperately

came back and dozed.

His gaze shifted to the royal king bed where his wife usually lay. There was no one in bed, just a note laid on it, "Make sure you arrange my bed." It was written by Amelia Bradley; his wife.

He quickly arranged the bed, took a bath, wore something, and ran downstairs. Maybe she was still down, he had intentions of asking her a favour. He wanted her to give him a lift since he had no money with him. In marriage, it was normal for a wife to give her husband a lift, but for him, it was considered a favour. That's because Amelia never wanted him close to her Chevrolet Camaro.

"Here comes my son-in-law. It's 7 am and you are just waking up. I provide for everything in this house, yet, I manage to wake up early. You are just a consumer, and you dare sleep till this time of the day? Just perfect." Jace's mother-in-law, Elizabeth Bradley yelled.

She was having breakfast with the rest of her family, including her mother who

was also at the table; she was one of the people who despised Jace a lot. She assumed Jace gave her granddaughter a charm, that's because she didn't understand why a lady who grew up in a wealthy family would settle for a mendicant.

"I'm sorry that I slept off mother, I was so tired." He said with his head down.

"Common, keep your apologies to yourself. They will do me no good. Return from where you came from because your presence irritates me." Jace simply nodded his head and turned to leave. What else could he say? He was just a poor son-in-law with nothing to his name.

He was about returning to where he came from when he heard the door push open.

His wife made her entry with another dude; Daryl.

"Welcome Daryl," Granny Modella rose to her feet and embraced him.

"Thank you, Granny. It's a pleasure seeing you." Daryl said with a winning smile plastered on his face.

"How is your family? How are they preparing for the elections?" Granny Modella asked, smiling at him.

"Good, Good!"

Daryl Ashton was an elegant, handsome, and business tycoon. He had several pharmacies along the countryside. He was the son of the former president. His father won the elections Twenty-four years ago, and now, they are still preparing to go in for another mandate.

This was just the kind of family where Granny Modella wanted her last granddaughter to marry into. She wanted to extend her relationship with his family, given that they were affluent people.

It was only normal for Granny Modella to matchmake him with Amelia. Aside from

being her granddaughter, Amelia was one of the rare beauties the city of Madrid possessed. She was 160 cm tall, had blue-ocean eyes, and a round, sexy, pretty butt.

She had a sculpted figure which was twine-thin. Her waist was tapered and she had a burnished complexion. A pair of arched eyebrows looked down on her sweeping eyelashes, which made all the rich men in the city of Madrid go crazy over her.

They came in their numbers requesting her hand in marriage, but she declined their offer. Some even offered millions of dollars just to have her close, yet, it was still a no.

Daryl held Amelia's hand in his, and this didn't please Jace at all. No matter if their marriage was based on blackmail, he wouldn't want someone to lay his hands on her.

"Jace, get to the kitchen and get some coffee for our visitor." Mrs. Elizabeth ordered.

He left for the kitchen and returned 15 minutes later, "Here, this is your coffee." He handed Daryl a cup of coffee, which he in turn sipped and spat on his face.

"Damn, don't you have any idea of how to make coffee? The water is not only too hot, but it's also tasteless as well." Daryl yelled.

"I'm sorry that the coffee was too hot, but that didn't give you the right to drool on my face." Jace clenched his fist as he was vexed by Daryl's nasty behaviour.

"As a maid, you have to be open to receive anything coming from your superiors, okay?" Daryl exclaimed bitterly.

"I am not the maid. I'm Amelia's husband and you are pretty aware of that," Jace said angrily.

"Oh, you are the husband who can't bring up five million bucks to prevent your wife's company from crashing? I see," Daryl gazed at him coldly.

"You would rather excel in being a maid than being a husband to a lady you can't care for her needs. I'm also in need of a maid. You can work on weekends and I'll give you some cool money, what do you think?" Daryl's face was full of smirks.

"The fact I am poor and you are rich doesn't give you the right to talk down on me. With all due respect, Mr. Daryl." Jace said as he could feel his anger boiling.

"That's some cool guts you have there, boy." Daryl exclaimed bitterly.

Amelia, together with Daryl and Jace, attended the same school. Though Jace was admitted through a scholarship program. That's because he was too poor to afford the complete fees.

Daryl had always been interested in Amelia, while she on the other end was interested in Jace. Jace showed no interest in her because he knew he was a poor boy who couldn't afford to date a rich girl on campus. Daryl could not pinpoint why Amelia rejected his offer of them settling together only to end up with a mendicant. He was ready to torment Jace till he slipped out of Amelia's life.

Amelia had Jace get drunk at the end-of-year party hosted by Arc Academy; their school. After he was drunk and couldn't work by himself, she had her boys carry him to a hotel, where she undressed and took pictures of them. She later promised to showcase it to the whole school and on social media, if he doesn't marry her. Left with no choice, Jace Winston forcefully agreed to the marriage.

Amelia fell in love with his beauty. He was very handsome, though he always wore tattered clothes. After her family members poured insults on him, her love for him began fading.

"I see I ain't welcome here, I might as well take my leave. Amelia, when you're ready to talk business, you know where to find me." He took the door.

"Wait, wait... Please don't go yet." Amelia said following him. Before going out fully, she turned, unpleasantly gazing at Jace, "Who gave you the liberty to talk to him in that manner?" She questioned Jace nervously.

'Slap!'

Elizabeth Bradley gave him a hot slap, "Do you know who you just challenged a while ago? He is the son of the former president. We are looking forward to creating a strong link with his family, and all you can do is ruin it?"

"Mom, didn't you see him talking down on me and my marriage?"

"I'm a man. I can't allow another man talk to me in that manner." Jace added.

"Man? Do you know who a man is? A man is someone who takes care of his family.

Take care, meaning you buy your wife a car, you give her pocket allowance and all that… Just to name a few. Now look at yourself and tell me if you are a man."

"The only person who could get us out of this f*cking problem, you mouthed him.

Just pray to your God he doesn't change his mind about investing in our company."

Elizabeth said angrily.

"Sorry, mother."
