Chapter 10. Fierce Battle

The smell of rotting moss mixed with the sharp, pungent scent of sulfur stung Kael's nose as they crawled through the drainage tunnels beneath the Shadow Fortress. The sound of water droplets falling into murky puddles echoed like the ticking of a clock counting down the world's remaining time. In front of him, Lyra moved as gracefully as a cat, while Jax gripped his greatsword so tightly his knuckles turned white.

"Don't light your fire yet, Kael," Lyra whispered without looking back. "One spark, and every guard up there will know we're climbing through their guts."

Kael nodded in the darkness, his trembling hands clenched tight. He could feel the heat pulsing in his chest, begging to be released, but he suppressed it deep down. "I know. How much further?"

"Right above us," Jax answered, his voice heavy and low. "If that map you stole is accurate, this ladder will lead us straight to the west wing corridor, near the core engine room."

They climbed the rusted iron ladder cautiously. Every creak of the metal felt like a scream in Kael's ears. As Jax pushed open the manhole cover above them, a dim purple light seeped in, bringing a chill that made his hair stand on end. It wasn't lamplight, but rather the radiation of Void energy creeping along the fortress's obsidian walls.

They emerged into a long, narrow corridor. The walls weren't made of ordinary stone, but a black material that looked like frozen liquid crystal. The silence in that place was so thick, it was as if the air itself was reluctant to vibrate.

"Too quiet," Lyra muttered, her bow already drawn with a silver arrow ready to fly. "The Sovereign isn't the type to leave his back door unguarded."

"Maybe he's too busy with his ritual," Kael said, trying to reassure himself.

"Or maybe he's inviting us in," Jax countered sharply. "Stay alert. Don't touch the walls."

They began to move forward, scouring the winding hallway. Suddenly, Kael felt a subtle vibration beneath his feet. He stopped instantly, his eyes widening as he saw patterns of red lines on the crystal floor begin to glow.

"Run!" Kael shouted.

Before they could even take a step, the floor beneath them shifted. Blades coated in dark energy shot out from the gaps in the walls with lightning speed. Jax slammed his sword down to parry an attack aimed at his face, while Lyra rolled across the floor, releasing an arrow that exploded right at the trap's mechanism.

"It's a trap! He knows we're here!" Lyra cried out while continuing to dodge dark arrows firing from the ceiling.

"That way! That door!" Jax pointed to an iron gate at the end of the corridor.

They ran through a rain of deadly weapons. Kael released a bit of his energy, creating a heat shield around them to vaporize the poisonous needles flying their way. However, just as they nearly reached the gate, a dry, emotionless laugh echoed from the obsidian walls.

"Welcome, my little heroes," the Shadow Sovereign's voice rang out from all directions. "You've arrived just in time to see how hope turns to dust."

Suddenly, the wall beside them exploded. Not into pieces, but folding and twisting like a mad piece of origami. The space around them distorted. The once-straight corridor became an overlapping labyrinth.

"Jax! Lyra!" Kael screamed as he saw a giant stone wall fall right between them.

"Kael! Stay there!" Jax's voice sounded muffled behind a wall that was likely several meters thick. "We'll find a way around! Don't put out your fire; use it as a guide!"

"Kael, don't let your fear win!" Lyra called out, her voice fading quickly as if the floor she stood on was dragging her into another dimension. "Remember what I said, we're a team! We'll meet at the center!"

Kael struck the stone wall with his burning fist. Boom! The explosion only left a small scorch mark. This obsidian had been reinforced with Void magic that absorbed his heat energy. He was alone. Again.

"No... not again," Kael whispered, his breath hitching. The suffocating feeling he once felt beneath the cave ruins now choked him once more.

He turned, trying to find an exit, but the corridor behind him had vanished, replaced by a row of black mirrors reflecting his fear-stricken face. Kael stepped forward, his hands producing fire to light the way, but the light only made his own shadow look like a monster ready to pounce.

He began to run. He passed through hallway after hallway, but every turn only led him to an identical room. In one room, he had to fight shadow creatures emerging from the floor. He burned them with overflowing rage, but every time one enemy fell, two more emerged from the darkness.

"Come out! Show yourself, Sovereign!" Kael roared, releasing a pillar of fire that struck the ceiling.

The labyrinth responded in a terrifying way. The ceiling began to descend slowly, while the walls narrowed. Kael saw a gap at the end of the hallway, a door that was beginning to close slowly.

It was the only way, he thought.

Kael pushed his legs, ignoring the sting in his lungs. He jumped, his body sliding across the slick floor just as the stone gate nearly touched the ground. He made it through the narrow gap, rolling onto the dusty ground.

As he stood up and looked back, a final, loud thud echoed. The door was permanently closed, merging with the wall as if there had never been an opening there. Kael looked ahead, and his heart nearly stopped.

He stood on an incredibly long suspension bridge, crossing a chasm whose bottom was invisible. Around him, thousands of similar corridors crisscrossed in the air, forming a giant sphere of dead ends and endless traps. There was no sign of Jax or Lyra. There was only a cold silence and the Sovereign's whispering voice creeping back into his ears.

"You are trapped in the Labyrinth of Lament, Kael," the voice whispered, now sounding so close, as if the Sovereign were standing right behind his shoulder. "Your friends are facing their own fears in other parts of this place. And you... you will die here, alone, before you have the chance to see the sunrise one last time."

Kael tried to summon his fire, but his palms only emitted thin smoke. Mental exhaustion and the Void's pressure in this place were beginning to consume his soul. He stared out at the infinite labyrinth, realizing that every step he took might only lead him deeper into the belly of a hungry dragon.

He was alone in the middle of a labyrinth with no exit, while somewhere in the center of this fortress, his mother was awaiting her end and the world was preparing for the apocalypse. Kael fell to his knees, staring at his hands which now felt cold, as the darkness around him began to move closer, ready to swallow the last light he possessed.
