Aren was feeling extremely happy right now. Even though he already knew it, getting recognition from others felt really good, as he was always ignored at school. Except for his parents, no one had ever acknowledged him.

He was thrilled just thinking about how his parents would react when they heard the news.

But then he remembered something.

"Sir, I have something to report."

The officer stopped in his tracks and looked at him.

"Yes?"

"Sir, two days ago, my phone fell into the sewage through an open manhole. When I went down there to find my phone, I was attacked by eleven rats. They were at least a foot long and had blood-red eyes.

They were much stronger than normal rats. I killed them all, but I was afraid to report it before my awakening. But I think something is wrong there."

The officer instantly stepped closer and grabbed his shoulder.

"Boy, do you know what you're saying? This could literally shake the city. You did well not telling the authorities. I will conduct a personal search first. Don't tell anyone else right now."

The officer went to bring his resources and his card. With the bloodline warrior card, he would be able to move anywhere in the main city except some restricted places and personal properties.

Thirty minutes later, the officer returned with a bag.

"You will have to go outside within a month to complete a training session. Practice well in this month.Because you are going to feel that the slum is a paradise compared to the world outside the wall."

Aren thanked him and took his leave. He couldn't wait to share the news with his parents.

After he left, the officer named Alexander dialed a number on his wrist nano-computer.

"Dave, go to the sewage of the slum. I have received a very disturbing report. Someone saw rats on the verge of mutation."

"Yes, sir. I'll go right away," replied the voice on the other side.

"I don't know how long the federation can suppress the real information.

He remembered the time when one of those monstrosities extended its claw from the dark mist. The pressure it released that day became known as the 100th Beast Tide.

Though not a single beast attacked any city, the federation had to tag it as a Beast Tide, even a Calamity-class Beast Tide, just to hide the real information from the people.

It was said that the top echelon of the federation went to suppress the Beast Tide themselves. That's why no one saw any monsters during that event.

"Humanity is really hanging on a thin line between hope and extinction. Anything can happen at any moment. I hope the president can become powerful enough to at least save a small portion of the remaining humanity."

This time, Aren came out of the awakening hall with pride. He didn't go to the slum but went to see the outer perimeter houses, where he and his family would be living from now on.

The system was simple. Anyone who awakened from the slum could enter the main city's outer perimeter and live there for a year for free.

After that, they would have to pay rent, which was easy for warriors or elementalists.

Killing monsters and selling them to the federation or private companies brought tremendous amounts of money.

So the weaker people would form parties to go outside to hunt monsters.

The stronger ones also formed parties, but only temporarily. Most of them preferred to move alone, especially those who were high-ranked awakeners or above.

But this had nothing to do with him. He just wanted to bring his family to safety and give them a happy life.

After confirming his new house, which was at least five times larger than their current one, he went toward the gate of the main city. When he came out, the soldier who had checked him earlier and sent him into the city with another soldier looked at him.

Aren was holding his warrior card this time.

"The kid wasn't lying. It's good that we got another warrior among us."

The cards were different according to rank.

Mid Rank - Red

High Rank - Purple

Top Rank - Black

Legendary Rank - Golden

Aren was holding a white card, so he didn't draw much attention from the soldiers.

"Congratulations, kid," the soldier said.

"Thanks, sir, for being lenient with me before," Aren replied politely.

He knew the leader of a team was at least a mid-rank awakener.

"Go. I can feel your excitement," the soldier said again.

Aren took a bus and went back to the slum area.

He returned home almost running. He knocked on the door.

Erina opened it.

"What happened, son? You look so excited," she asked with a smile. Seeing her son so happy after going through such harsh times made her happy too.

"Mom, can you call Dad to come home? I have something to tell you both."

Erina could see that her son could hardly control his excitement, so she didn't ask any questions and called Samuel.

"What happened, Erina? Is everything alright?" Samuel asked from the other end of the phone in a worried tone.

"Everything's alright, don't worry. Aren came home with this really big smile on his face and asked you to come home. He said he has something to tell us together," Erina replied.

"Huh? Has the boy found a girlfriend or what?" Samuel joked.

"You just come home. I can't wait to hear his happy news, but he won't tell me alone."

Samuel put the phone in his pocket.

"Boss, I need to leave early today. Can I have the day off?"

"What happened, Samuel? Is everything okay at home?" his boss asked. Samuel had been working with him for years, and they had a good bond.

"I don't know either. My wife just called me and asked me to come home urgently."

"Alright then. You can go. The workload isn't heavy these days anyway."

"Thanks, boss." Samuel started walking toward the residential area of the slum.

When he returned, he saw Erina, Luna, and Aren sitting on the sofa.

"What's so urgent, son? You almost made me worried," Samuel asked Aren.

"Sit down, Dad. I don't think you'll be able to stand after seeing this."

Samuel was confused but sat down anyway.

Aren took out his card.

The moment Samuel saw it, he stood up immediately.

His eyes stayed locked on the white card. A thought crossed his mind. Non-awakened people wouldn't dare to keep a similar card to those of the awakened.

"Son... I... is that what I think it is?" he stammered. Tears welled up in his eyes.

Erina put her hands over her mouth. She wasn't as strong as her husband. Her tears burst out immediately.

Luna didn't know what was happening, but she knew something had made both her parents extremely happy.

"Brother, what is this white card? Did you find a job?" Luna asked.

Samuel couldn't hold back his tears when he saw his wife crying.

He went to Aren and hugged him tightly.

"Son, how? How is this possible?"

Aren couldn't control his tears either. When Luna saw everyone crying, she started crying too, like a reflex.

"Father, there are records of people awakening three days after absorbing the serum. So I didn't lose hope, and yesterday I felt some change in my body and went to test it out."

Samuel took the card from his hand and started kissing it.

His son was a warrior. No one among his ancestors had ever awakened, not even from Erina's side. They had been destined to live in the slum for generations.

But that chain of miserable destiny was broken by his son.

He could die happily now. There wouldn't be any regret.
