"Seriously, Serena, how am I supposed to sleep when my entryway looks like a construction zone?" Felix groaned, leaning heavily on the wooden handle of his broom as he pushed a small pile of white drywall dust toward the threshold. "I just wanted to sweep up this mess so we don't track plaster dust all over the carpet. Is that really too much to ask on a Tuesday night?"

Serena, sitting cross-legged on the edge of the futon with her knees pulled tightly to her chest, stared at him with wide, unblinking green eyes. "You shouldn't let your guard down, Felix. The forces of the night are devious. They do not simply retreat because you ask them to. They are likely regrouping, calculating your spiritual pressure, and preparing a counter-offensive."

"They're theater students in matching leather jackets, Serena," Felix said, let out a long, exhausted sigh. "The only thing they're calculating is how much they spent on hair gel. Besides, they ruined my welcome mat. That was a housewarming gift from my mom. It had a little cartoon frog on it."

"A protective ward disguised as an amphibian," Serena muttered, nodding sagely to herself. "A brilliant defensive measure."

"It said 'Welcome to our Pad,' Serena! It wasn't a ward, it was a pun!"

Before Serena could reply, the apartment door—already hanging precariously from its top hinge after the earlier altercation—was violently kicked off its frame.

CRASH!

The heavy wooden slab slammed flat onto the floor, sending a massive plume of drywall dust billowing into the room. Standing in the doorway, framed by the flickering yellow light of the hallway, was the vampire leader. His slicked-back hair was disheveled, his eyes glowed a furious, blood-red crimson, and in his right hand, he brandished a sleek, serrated silver dagger.

"Did you truly believe a few empty threats would suffice to banish the Hollowed Blood, mortal?!" the leader roared, his fangs bared, his voice echoing through the narrow apartment. "I shall carve the arrogance from your chest and drink your very soul!"

"Felix, look out!" Serena screamed, instantly springing to her feet. "He has a silver soul-cleaving blade! It's coated in necrotic poison! Get behind me!"

"Wait, no, don't step on the pile!" Felix yelled, his voice cracking with genuine panic.

"What?" the vampire leader blinked, momentarily thrown off by the exclamation. "What did you say?"

"I said, don't step on the pile!" Felix repeated, pointing his broom frantically at the neat mound of white dust he had just spent ten minutes collecting. "I literally just swept that! If you take another step forward with those muddy boots, you're going to scatter it all over the clean carpet!"

"You dare lecture me about carpet maintenance?!" the leader hissed, his face contorting in pure rage. "Die, you insolent worm!"

The vampire lunged forward, thrusting the silver dagger directly toward Felix’s chest.

"I told you to watch your step!" Felix shouted.

In a reflex action born of pure, unadulterated annoyance, Felix thrust the broom forward, intending to sweep the pile of drywall dust out of the way of the vampire’s descending boot. He wasn't aiming for the vampire; he was aiming for the dirt.

But as he shoved the broom forward, the smooth, heavy wooden handle slid perfectly between the vampire leader's ankles just as the undead creature shifted his weight to spring.

"Wait, what is this kinetic—" the leader gasped.

Thwack.

The sturdy handle caught the vampire's back ankle with flawless precision. His momentum completely betrayed him. His legs flew out from under him, and his eyes went wide with sudden, terrifying realization as gravity took hold.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" Felix panicked, seeing the pale, leather-clad vampire falling face-first directly toward him. "Don't fall on me! I'm holding food!"

In his left hand, Felix had been holding a thick, lukewarm slice of "Garlic Overload Triple-Cheese Pizza" that he had grabbed from the kitchen counter to snack on while sweeping. As he flailed his arms to maintain his own balance and avoid being crushed by the falling vampire, his left hand shot forward in a desperate tensing motion.

SPLAT.

The grease-laden, garlic-encrusted pizza slice slapped squarely and perfectly across the vampire leader's face, sealing over his eyes, nose, and mouth like a hot, cheesy, highly toxic mask.

"Oh, great! My breakfast!" Felix groaned, looking at his empty, greasy fingers. "I was saving that slice!"

"ARGHHHHHHHHH!"

The vampire leader's scream was a sound of pure, unadulterated agony. He hit the floor, rolling frantically as his skin began to bubble and hiss beneath the thick layers of roasted garlic paste, garlic powder, and garlic-infused olive oil.

"THE SACRED FLAME!" the leader shrieked, clawing desperately at his own face, tearing away chunks of cheese and crust as his skin broke out in massive, burning red hives. "IT BURNS! MY CELLULAR MATRIX IS DISSOLVING! THE SEARING HEAT OF A THOUSAND SUNS!"

"What the... is he lactose intolerant?" Felix asked, taking a hasty step back and gripping his broom defensively. "I mean, it's got extra mozzarella, but that is a really extreme dairy allergy. Do you need an EpiPen or something?"

The two vampire subordinates, who had been lingering in the hallway to watch their leader's triumph, gaped into the room with expressions of absolute, mind-shattering horror.

"Boss!" one of them squealed, his voice cracking. "He... he struck him with the legendary Solar Disc of Alchemy!"

"Look at the weapon!" the other whined, pointing a trembling, clawed finger at the dripping cheese on the floor. "It’s coated in the concentrated, highly purified essence of the Allium Sativum! He synthesized a high-tier holy oil strike in the palm of his hand! He didn't even use a magic circle! He didn't even chant!"

"It's just garlic pizza!" Felix shouted back, completely bewildered. "Are you guys seriously doing a bit right now? Who is allergic to garlic to this extent? It’s a standard menu item!"

"Retreat!" the leader screamed, his face swollen to twice its normal size, tears streaming down his blistered cheeks as he scrambled backward on all fours like a terrified crab. "The Reborn Master can manifest conceptual weaknesses at will! He can manipulate the very laws of probability! If we stay, he will turn our blood into marinara! Save yourselves!"

"Run! The Holy Alchemist is merciful but unyielding!" the subordinates cried.

They grabbed their screaming, pizza-smeared leader by the collar of his leather jacket and dragged him frantically down the hallway, their boots squeaking in terror until the sound of their panic-stricken wails faded down the stairwell.

Silence returned to apartment 4B.

Felix stood in the middle of the room, looking down at the greasy smear on the floorboards, then at his ruined broom, and finally at his grease-stained hand.

"Man," Felix sighed, running a hand through his messy dark hair. "What a colossal waste of good garlic bread crust. That place on 5th Street doesn't even deliver this late. Now I have nothing to eat before my internship tomorrow."

He turned around, only to find Serena staring at him. She hadn't moved an inch from her spot near the futon. Her face was pale, her lips slightly parted, and her stunning green eyes were wide, reflecting a mixture of profound, breathless awe and something deeper, warmer, and entirely overwhelmed.

"Felix..." she whispered, her voice trembling as she took a slow, tentative step toward him. "You... you just..."

"I know," Felix sighed, walking over to the tiny kitchen sink to wash the grease off his hands. "I lost my breakfast. And the hallway is still a mess. It's just a total disaster of a night."

Serena stopped just a foot away from him, her gaze fixed on his hands as they scrubbed under the running water, then shifting up to his tired, ridiculously symmetrical face.

"You didn't even blink," she said, her voice dropping to a soft, reverent whisper that vibrated with a strange, sweet intensity. "You neutralized an elite assassin of the Hollowed Blood with a simple piece of household wood. And then... using a legendary divine artifact disguised as a flatbread, you utterly incinerated his physical vessel. You did it all while complaining about... dust."

Felix turned off the tap, dried his hands on a towel, and looked down at her. A soft, amused smile touched his lips as he saw the sheer, dramatic intensity in her eyes.

"Serena, it's just a broom and a slice of leftover pizza," he said gently, his voice low and warm in the quiet room. "You really have to stop translating every single mundane thing I do into some kind of epic fantasy novel. I'm not a master of anything. I'm just a guy who hates messy floors and loves garlic."

"No," Serena murmured, her chest tightening as she stepped even closer, the faint scent of lavender, sweat, and warm dough washing over her. "You are anything but normal, Felix Knight."

She reached out, her gloved fingers trembling slightly as they brushed against the sleeve of his shirt, lingering there as if trying to ground herself. Her heart was beating so hard she was certain he could hear it.

"Well," Felix said, his own cheeks flushing a light, dusty pink. He rubbed the back of his neck, suddenly looking incredibly shy as he looked down at her lips, then back to her eyes. "I guess I'm pretty good under pressure. But seriously, we should get some sleep. I have to find a way to prop that door closed so the drafts don't get in."

"I... I can watch the entrance," Serena offered, her face turning a vibrant, burning crimson as she realized how close they were standing. "As your Warden, it is my absolute duty to guard your rest."

"Sure, Warden," Felix smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. He reached out and gently patted her head, his touch warm and surprisingly tender. "Just don't do any more dramatic backflips into my bathtub, okay? I can't afford to lose any more fixtures."

"I... I promise," she whispered, her heart doing a ridiculous, soaring flip at his touch.

Felix walked back to the futon, pulling the blue blanket over his shoulders as he settled in. "Goodnight, Serena."

"Goodnight, Felix," she murmured.

She sat down on her side of the futon, waiting until his breathing slowed into the steady, rhythmic pace of deep sleep. Once she was certain he was under, she quietly pulled out her tactical smartphone, her fingers flying across the glowing screen as she composed an urgent, encrypted dispatch to the Hunter Guild.

To: Commander, Hunter Guild HQ

Subject: Urgent Update on Class-S Threat "Reborn Master"

The target’s power defies all conventional magical classification. Tonight, he defeated a high-ranking vampire strike team without deploying a single traditional spell. He manipulated the absolute laws of probability, utilizing a common wooden cleaning staff to neutralize the enemy’s kinetic momentum with zero margin of error. Furthermore, he possesses the terrifying ability to instantly synthesize high-potency holy weapons from organic matter. He callously refers to this devastating divine alchemy as 'pizza.' The level of his psychological warfare is absolute; he openly mocked their weaknesses while maintaining a civilian facade. I am continuing my deep-cover infiltration, but I must warn the Council: his magnetic charisma is highly potent. My own spiritual defenses are beginning to show signs of strain. Please advise.

She pressed Send, her heart hammering against her ribs as the transmission cleared. She locked her phone and slipped it away, looking over at Felix's sleeping form.

He had shifted in his sleep, his hand falling open on the space between them.

Serena hesitated for a long, quiet moment. Then, slowly, she let her fingers slide into his, her hand finding the steady, grounding warmth of his grip.

Magnetic charisma indeed, she thought, a small, helpless smile touching her lips as she closed her eyes, finally letting herself drift off to sleep beside her dangerous, beautiful enemy.

It’s six in the morning," Felix croaked, his voice thick with sleep. "Are you still texting about the 'Hollowed Blood' goths? Give it a rest. They’re probably all at home nursing their garlic allergies by now."Serena jumped, nearly dropping her phone. She quickly locked the screen, her face flushing a guilty pink. "I... "Felix," Serena said, stepping in front of him, her body coiled like a spring, her grip white-knuckled on the kitchen knife. "I believe the rent just went up."Felix stood frozen for a heartbeat, his eyes fixed on the black, viscous liquid seeping under the doorframe. It hissed against the wood, a faint, acrid smell of ozone and wet rot filling the tiny apartment."Is that... hydraulic fluid?" Felix asked, his brow furrowed in genuine annoyance. "I swear, if this is Grimaldi trying to cheap out on the hallway renovations again, I am going to lose my mind. That stuff is going to ruin the floorboards."Serena’s jaw tightened. Hydraulic fluid? The Reborn Master is truly a master of misdirection. He calls the ichor of the undead 'hydraulic fluid' to mock the encroaching darkness. He is so calm it’s terrifying."Felix, get back," she hissed, her voice low and dangerous. "Those aren't maintenance workers. They’re leeches. Predators of the night. The steam from the ramen bowl swirled in the cramped room, carrying with it a scent so warm and inviting that Serena felt her resolve fraying at the edges. She watched Felix move with a casual grace, his movements unburdened by the weight of malice she had spent her life learning to fear."Here you go," Felix said, turning around with a tray. He placed two steaming mugs of chamomile tea down and a small ceramic plate piled high with golden-brown cookies. "Sorry it’s not exactly gourmet, but I figured you could use something sweet after that whole incident with the pipes."Serena stared at the plate. The cookies were thick, studded with semi-melted pools of dark chocolate, and still warm enough to make the air around them shimmer."You baked these?" she asked, her voice tight."Yeah, took a tray out right before the ceiling started leaking," Felix said, pulling up a wooden stool. "I’m a bit of a stress-baker. It helps me focus when I’m dealing with... well, everything."Stress-baking,

I swear to carry out your dark will without hesitation!"Felix nearly dropped his mug. "Whoa, whoa, whoa! Get up off the floor! It's still wet down there, and honestly, I don't think my landlord has swept under the radiator in twenty years.""I will not rise until you grant me sanctuary!" Serena insisted, her eyes wide with desperate resolve. She stared up at him, her heart beating like a trapped bird. "I am but a humble apprentice. I have been cast out by my guild—the High Order of... of Dramatic Arts! They have stripped me of my lodge, and my master has declared me a rogue initiate.
