The Resistance base was enormous.

I walked through the main chamber with Dr. REN-9 beside me, trying to take it all in. People moved everywhere, carrying crates and devices, speaking in low voices. The air hummed with energy, faint and constant.

Maps covered the walls. Some were old, yellowed and cracked. Others were new, marked with symbols I didn't understand. Screens displayed data that flickered and changed.

"This is incredible," I said.

Dr. REN-9 nodded. "It took decades to build. Generations. We've been hiding and growing for a long time."

"Waiting for what?"

She looked at me. "For someone like you."

I didn't know what to say to that.

A woman approached. She was tall and sharp-eyed, with short dark hair and a scar running down her left cheek. She wore a dark coat and carried a device on her belt.

"So this is him," she said. "The one who bonded with a Null-Type."

"This is Nova," Dr. REN-9 said. "Nova, this is Kira. She's one of our leaders."

Kira studied me. Her eyes were cold, assessing. "You're injured."

"Broken ribs. Fractured arm. Sparks."

She nodded. "We'll fix you up. Follow me."

I followed her through the chamber and into a smaller room. Medical equipment lined the walls. A table sat in the center, clean and white.

"Sit," Kira said.

I sat. She examined my arm, pressing against the brace.

"This is a temporary fix," she said. "We need to open you up and replace the damaged parts."

"Open me up?"

"Your arm. Not your chest. Relax."

I didn't relax. But I didn't argue.

She worked quickly. I felt pressure, pulling, and a strange cold sensation where metal met flesh. My optical implants flickered, showing me readouts of the process.

[LEFT ARM — REPAIR IN PROGRESS]

[ESTIMATED TIME: 45 MINUTES]

"Your system is old," Kira said. "District-grade. Low quality."

"It's what I was given."

"Your arm was designed to fail. The District builds everyone with weaknesses. Keeps you dependent on them."

I looked at my arm. "Can you fix it?"

"I can make it better. Stronger. Faster." She paused. "But it'll change you."

"How?"

"You'll be more machine. Less human."

I thought about that. About what it meant. About who I was.

"Do it," I said.

Kira nodded. She continued working, and I felt the cold spread through my arm.

---

When she was done, my arm was different. Sleeker. Darker. The plating was smoother, and the joints moved silently.

I flexed my fingers. They responded faster than before.

[MOTOR RESPONSE: 94%]

"Better," I said.

"Much better," Kira agreed. "But remember, you're more machine now. That changes things."

"What things?"

"Your timer. Your body's rhythm. The way you think. The more machine you become, the less human you feel."

I looked at my palm. The timer still counted down.

2 YEARS, 34 DAYS, 16 HOURS.

"Worth it," I said.

Kira studied me. "You're different from most scavengers."

"I'm different from everyone."

She almost smiled. "That's why you're here."

---

I walked back into the main chamber and found Dr. REN-9 standing near a table covered in artifacts. Ancient metal pieces, cracked and worn.

"Your arm looks better," she said.

"It feels better."

She nodded. "Nyx-0 is outside. It doesn't like enclosed spaces."

"That thing hates everything."

"It's been trapped for three hundred years. Give it time."

I looked at the artifacts on the table. Pieces of metal, old and worn. Carved with symbols I couldn't read.

"What are these?" I asked.

"Remains. From the Celestial Forge. Pieces of the original machine."

I touched one. It was cold, smooth, and ancient.

"Nyx-0 is connected to this place," I said.

"Yes. The Forge created the Null-Types. They were designed to carry memories."

"Memories of what?"

"Everything. The war. The First Humans. The truth."

I looked at the artifact. "So Nyx-0 is a storage device."

"In a way. But it's also alive. It has a consciousness. It can choose."

I thought about that. About Nyx-0's sarcasm, its weakness, its moments of silence.

"Why did it choose me?" I asked.

Dr. REN-9 looked at me. "Maybe because you were willing to listen. Or maybe because you were in the right place at the right time."

"That's not reassuring."

"It's honest."

---

A commotion came from the entrance. People moved quickly, grabbing weapons and devices.

Kira appeared. "We have a problem. A District patrol is heading this way. They don't know about the base, but they're close."

"How much time?" Dr. REN-9 asked.

"Twenty minutes. Maybe less."

I looked at my new arm. Sleek. Strong. Faster.

"I can fight," I said.

Kira looked at me. "You've never fought anything."

"I ran from soldiers. That's different."

She studied me for a moment. "Stay close to Dr. REN-9. Don't do anything stupid."

"I can't promise that."

She almost smiled again.

---

I found Nyx-0 outside. The wolf sat on a ridge, staring at the horizon.

"Nova," it said. "There's a patrol coming."

"I know."

"You need to be careful."

"I'm always careful."

"That's a lie."

I sat down beside it. "Tell me something about the past. Something real."

Nyx-0 was silent for a moment. Then it said, "The sky used to be blue. The First Humans used to sit outside and look at it. They didn't have timers. They didn't have machines."

I looked up at the gray sky. "I can't imagine it."

"Neither can they. But it was real."

I felt something shift inside me. A crack in the wall I'd built around my mind.

"Will you show me?" I asked. "One day?"

"When I'm strong enough. Yes."

I nodded. "Good."

---

The soldiers appeared on the horizon. White armor. Marching in formation. Heading straight for the base.

Dr. REN-9 appeared beside me. "We need to move. There's a tunnel. It leads away from here."

"I can fight," I said.

"You're still healing."

"I don't care."

She looked at me. "You're not ready yet. You'll get yourself killed."

I looked at the soldiers. At the white armor. At the single eye on their chests.

"Nexus was taken by them," I said. "I'm not running anymore."

Dr. REN-9 studied me. Then she nodded.

"Fine," she said. "But stay close."

I looked at my new arm. My sleek, strong, faster arm.

"Let's go."

I read the poster twice before the words stopped sliding around.WANTED FOR TREASON AND CORE THEFT. REWARD, TEN THOUSAND CORES. ALIVE.Ten thousand Cores. One Core could feed me for a month. I had spent my whole life digging through rust for scraps worth a hundredth of that."It's the Resistance's mark," I said. My voice sounded strange in my own ears. "The circle with three lines.""It could be forged," Mira said. She was already stuffing her tablet into her coat. "The District has the mark on file. They've used it before to turn us against each other.""Could be.""But?"I looked at the note again. Bring me the creature. The boy is optional.Nyx-0 had been curled at the foot of my bedroll. It rose now, wolf-shaped, its burning-star eyes fixed on the paper. "That handwriting is not District," it said in my head. "The District writes in printed blocks. Somebody wrote this by hand.""Somebody who wants you and not me.""Somebody who knows what I am."Dr. REN-9 came through the tent fla

  • Chapter 19: Who Heard

We reached the first scavenger camp at dawn.I knew it before I saw it. The smell came first: burnt oil, boiled scrap-moss, and too many people packed into too little space. Then the walls appeared out of the orange haze, a ring of welded Beast plating with a gate made from a single enormous jawbone."Ashfall Camp," Mira said. "Four hundred people. They're on the repeater line, so they should have caught part of the broadcast.""Should have," I said."That's the best I can give you."Kira stopped at the edge of the dust and studied the gate. "I'll stay out here. If the District has eyes on this place, they'll be watching for a group. Better if I'm not part of it.""You're the one who wanted us to move fast," I said."And I still do. Go in, find out what they know, and come back before the sun clears the ridge."She said it smoothly, and it made sense. I still didn't like it.Nyx-0 pressed against my leg, small again, cat-shaped, pretending to be something a scavenger would keep for co

  • Chapter 18: The Silence After

The Spire fell quiet. Not the good kind of quiet. Not the kind where you win and everyone cheers. This was the kind where you shout into a canyon and the canyon doesn't answer.I stood at the top of the broadcast platform with smoke rising off my arm and stared at the sky.Nothing happened. No sirens. No riots. No crowds pouring into the streets."Mira," I said. "Did it work?"She didn't answer. She was bent over the control panel, her hood shoved back, her fingers flying across the keys. Her face had gone pale."Mira.""It went out," she said. "The signal left the tower. I watched it leave.""Then why is nobody screaming?"She looked up. "Because somebody caught it."I didn't like the way she said that.~ ~ ~We didn't wait around to find out who.Dr. REN-9 grabbed my sleeve and dragged me toward the elevator. Zero-One raised his hand. The soldiers moved. White armor. Unblinking eyes. They came at us like a wave, weapons raised, boots thundering against the polished floor.I didn't think. I just moved. My mechanical arm came up, and I fired. The energy pulse hit the first soldier square in the chest. He flew backward, crashing into the others behind him. But more kept coming. They were everywhere.Nyx-0 moved like shadow, faster than I'd ever seen it. Its wolf form tore through the soldiers, teeth and claws and burning-star eyes. It took down three before they could even react.Dr. REN-9 was beside me, her device raised. A burst of light shot out, blinding the soldiers closest to us. Mira was running toward the broadcast tower, her fingers already working on the control panel."Cover me!" she shouted.I turned and fired again. Another soldier went down."Zero-One!" I shouted. The man in white was still standing at the top of the stairs, watching. Calm. Unbothered. Like he knew how this woul

Dawn came fast. Too fast.I hadn't slept again. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Nexus standing at the Spire, alone, waiting for Zero-One. I saw him fall. I saw them take him away.I couldn't let that happen to me.The Resistance members were already moving when I opened my eyes. Packing bags. Checking weapons. Mira stood at the entrance, watching the horizon."The tunnel entrance is half a mile from here," she said without turning. "We move now, or we don't move at all."I stood up. My ribs ached. My arm hummed. "Let's go."---We moved through the Bone Yard in silence. The sun was still low, casting long shadows across the rust. The air was cold and sharp.Mira led us to a collapsed structure half-buried in debris. She pressed a panel on the wall, and a section of the floor slid open, revealing a dark hole."The tunnel," she said. "It runs for miles beneath the surface. It'll take us close to the Spire.""How close?" I asked."Within a mile. We'll have to travel above ground for t

  • CHAPTER 15

We left the Red Bazaar and moved fast. Mira led us through narrow alleys and hidden passages, moving like someone who knew every corner of the Bone Yard. Her hood was pulled low, hiding her face. But I could see her eyes. Sharp. Watchful. "The Spire is three days from here," she said. "Maybe more. The terrain is dangerous, and the District patrols heavily." "I don't care how long it takes," I said. "You should. Every day you delay, the District gets stronger." I looked at my wrist. At the watch. "Then we move faster." Mira stopped and turned to face me. "You really are like him." "Who?" "Nexus. He used to say the same thing. Always pushing. Always moving." I felt a strange warmth in my chest. "What happened to him?" She was quiet for a moment. "He got too close. The District knew he was coming. They were waiting for him." "Where?" "At the Spire. He was trying to do the same thing you're trying to do now." I stared at her. "He tried to broadcast the truth?" "Yes. He almo
