The soldiers marched closer.

White armor gleaming against the orange dust. Six of them. Maybe more. They moved in perfect formation, their boots crunching against the rusted metal.

I flexed my new arm. The joints moved smoothly, silently.

"How do we do this?" I asked.

Dr. REN-9 looked at me. "We don't fight them head-on. We use the terrain. The ruins. We make them come to us."

"Then what?"

"Then we survive."

She moved quickly, ducking behind a collapsed wall. I followed her, Nyx-0 close behind.

The soldiers stopped at the edge of the ruins. Their commander raised a device, scanning the area.

"Anomaly detected," he said. "The creature is nearby."

I pressed myself against the wall. My heart pounded.

"Wait," Dr. REN-9 whispered. "Wait for them to spread out."

The soldiers split into pairs. Two went left. Two went right. Two came straight toward us.

"Now," she said.

I moved. Fast. Faster than I'd ever moved. My new arm responded instantly, propelling me forward.

The first soldier didn't see me coming. I hit him low, driving my shoulder into his chest. He went down hard.

The second soldier raised his weapon. I grabbed it with my metal hand and crushed the barrel. The metal bent like paper.

He stared at me, eyes wide.

"What are you?" he whispered.

I didn't answer. I hit him in the face with my metal fist.

He went down.

Nyx-0 moved past me, faster than before, taking down two more soldiers with a single pounce. Its wolf form was powerful and precise.

The remaining soldiers raised their weapons. Dr. REN-9 appeared behind them, pressing a device against their armor. They froze, electricity crackling over their bodies.

Then they dropped.

Silence.

I stood there, breathing hard, my new arm humming with energy.

"That was different," Nyx-0 said.

"I know."

"You're actually useful now."

"Don't sound so surprised."

The commander was still alive. He lay on the ground, his armor cracked and sparking.

I knelt beside him. "Who sent you?"

"Zero-One," he said. "The Weaver. He wants the creature."

"Why?"

"He didn't say. He just said to bring it back. Alive."

I looked at Dr. REN-9. She nodded.

"Take his coms," she said. "We can use them."

I pulled the communication device from his belt.

"What are you going to do to me?" he asked.

"Let you go," I said. "But you're going to tell Zero-One something first."

"What?"

I leaned closer. "Tell him I'm coming for him. Tell him Nexus's friend is coming."

The commander stared at me.

I stood up. "Let's go."

---

We moved through the ruins, away from the fallen soldiers.

"We can't stay here," Dr. REN-9 said. "They'll send more."

"Where do we go?"

"There's another safe house. Farther east. But it'll take days to reach."

"I can make it."

She looked at my arm. "You've changed. More machine now."

"It's what I needed."

"You might be right."

We walked in silence for a while. The Bone Yard stretched around us, endless and gray. Nyx-0 ran ahead, scanning for threats.

"Tell me about Nexus," I said. "What he was like."

Dr. REN-9 was quiet for a moment. Then she said, "He was determined. Stubborn. He never gave up."

"Sound familiar?"

"It does."

"Did you know him well?"

She looked at me. "I recruited him. Into the Resistance. I saw something in him."

"What?"

"A refusal to accept the world the way it was. A need to find the truth."

I looked at my wrist. At the watch. "He was like that. Always asking questions."

"Yes. That's why the District took him."

I felt something tighten in my chest.

"Tell me about him," I said. "Something real."

She thought for a moment. "He used to hum. When he was working. When he was thinking. Always the same tune."

"What tune?"

"I don't know the name. But it was old. From before the war."

I tried to remember. A tune. A hum. Something familiar.

I couldn't.

"One day," I said. "I'll remember."

"Yes," she said. "One day."

---

We stopped at a collapsed structure. Dr. REN-9 checked her devices.

"We'll rest here for the night," she said. "I need to recharge the equipment."

I sat down. My body ached, but my new arm felt stronger than before.

Nyx-0 appeared beside me.

"You did well today," it said.

"Thanks."

"Don't let it go to your head."

"I won't."

"I'm serious."

"I know."

We sat in silence for a moment.

"Tell me something," I said. "Something about the war."

Nyx-0 was quiet. Then it said, "The war was brutal. Millions died. Beasts ravaged the world. But the truth was worse."

"Worse how?"

"The District started it. They caused the explosion. They killed the First Humans."

I felt cold. "Why?"

"Control. Power. Fear. The usual reasons."

"And now?"

"Now they're afraid. Afraid of the truth coming out. Afraid of people like you."

I looked at my palm. 2 YEARS, 34 DAYS, 12 HOURS.

"I don't have much time," I said.

"Then don't waste it," Nyx-0 said. "Sleep. Rest. Tomorrow we fight."

I lay down on the cold metal and closed my eyes.

I dreamed of Nexus.

He was sitting next to me. Young. Dark hair. Laughing. He said something I couldn't hear.

I reached for him.

He faded.

I woke up with tears on my face.

I read the poster twice before the words stopped sliding around.WANTED FOR TREASON AND CORE THEFT. REWARD, TEN THOUSAND CORES. ALIVE.Ten thousand Cores. One Core could feed me for a month. I had spent my whole life digging through rust for scraps worth a hundredth of that."It's the Resistance's mark," I said. My voice sounded strange in my own ears. "The circle with three lines.""It could be forged," Mira said. She was already stuffing her tablet into her coat. "The District has the mark on file. They've used it before to turn us against each other.""Could be.""But?"I looked at the note again. Bring me the creature. The boy is optional.Nyx-0 had been curled at the foot of my bedroll. It rose now, wolf-shaped, its burning-star eyes fixed on the paper. "That handwriting is not District," it said in my head. "The District writes in printed blocks. Somebody wrote this by hand.""Somebody who wants you and not me.""Somebody who knows what I am."Dr. REN-9 came through the tent fla

  • Chapter 19: Who Heard

We reached the first scavenger camp at dawn.I knew it before I saw it. The smell came first: burnt oil, boiled scrap-moss, and too many people packed into too little space. Then the walls appeared out of the orange haze, a ring of welded Beast plating with a gate made from a single enormous jawbone."Ashfall Camp," Mira said. "Four hundred people. They're on the repeater line, so they should have caught part of the broadcast.""Should have," I said."That's the best I can give you."Kira stopped at the edge of the dust and studied the gate. "I'll stay out here. If the District has eyes on this place, they'll be watching for a group. Better if I'm not part of it.""You're the one who wanted us to move fast," I said."And I still do. Go in, find out what they know, and come back before the sun clears the ridge."She said it smoothly, and it made sense. I still didn't like it.Nyx-0 pressed against my leg, small again, cat-shaped, pretending to be something a scavenger would keep for co

  • Chapter 18: The Silence After

The Spire fell quiet. Not the good kind of quiet. Not the kind where you win and everyone cheers. This was the kind where you shout into a canyon and the canyon doesn't answer.I stood at the top of the broadcast platform with smoke rising off my arm and stared at the sky.Nothing happened. No sirens. No riots. No crowds pouring into the streets."Mira," I said. "Did it work?"She didn't answer. She was bent over the control panel, her hood shoved back, her fingers flying across the keys. Her face had gone pale."Mira.""It went out," she said. "The signal left the tower. I watched it leave.""Then why is nobody screaming?"She looked up. "Because somebody caught it."I didn't like the way she said that.~ ~ ~We didn't wait around to find out who.Dr. REN-9 grabbed my sleeve and dragged me toward the elevator. Zero-One raised his hand. The soldiers moved. White armor. Unblinking eyes. They came at us like a wave, weapons raised, boots thundering against the polished floor.I didn't think. I just moved. My mechanical arm came up, and I fired. The energy pulse hit the first soldier square in the chest. He flew backward, crashing into the others behind him. But more kept coming. Mira was running toward the broadcast tower, her fingers already working on the control panel."Cover me!" she shouted.I turned and fired again. Another soldier went down."Zero-One!" I shouted. The man in white was still standing at the top of the stairs, watching. Calm. Unbothered. Like he knew how this woul

  • CHAPTER 17

Dawn came fast. Too fast.I hadn't slept again. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Nexus standing at the Spire, alone, waiting for Zero-One. I saw him fall. I saw them take him away.I couldn't let that happen to me.The Resistance members were already moving when I opened my eyes. Packing bags. Checking weapons. Mira stood at the entrance, watching the horizon."The tunnel entrance is half a mile from here," she said without turning. "We move now, or we don't move at all."I stood up. My ribs ached. My arm hummed. "Let's go."---We moved through the Bone Yard in silence. The sun was still low, casting long shadows across the rust. The air was cold and sharp.Mira led us to a collapsed structure half-buried in debris. She pressed a panel on the wall, and a section of the floor slid open, revealing a dark hole."The tunnel," she said. "It runs for miles beneath the surface. It'll take us close to the Spire.""How close?" I asked."Within a mile. We'll have to travel above ground for t

  • CHAPTER 15

We left the Red Bazaar and moved fast. Mira led us through narrow alleys and hidden passages, moving like someone who knew every corner of the Bone Yard. Her hood was pulled low, hiding her face. But I could see her eyes. Sharp. Watchful. "The Spire is three days from here," she said. "Maybe more. The terrain is dangerous, and the District patrols heavily." "I don't care how long it takes," I said. "You should. Every day you delay, the District gets stronger." I looked at my wrist. At the watch. "Then we move faster." Mira stopped and turned to face me. "You really are like him." "Who?" "Nexus. He used to say the same thing. Always pushing. Always moving." I felt a strange warmth in my chest. "What happened to him?" She was quiet for a moment. "He got too close. The District knew he was coming. They were waiting for him." "Where?" "At the Spire. He was trying to do the same thing you're trying to do now." I stared at her. "He tried to broadcast the truth?" "Yes. He almo
