Asher’s POV
I had been forced to sit all alone in the car while Theo went in to take the test. It felt like the longest hour I had ever spent. Just me and my restrained tears in the car.
People would occasionally look at me as they walked past the car window. I had fallen for the temptation of going online to see the videos of me that had been all over the internet.
And that made me even more miserable.
I was still shocked at how Neil had been able to get the professor to do his bidding. It looked like anyone could do anything in the school if they became a pop star.
A call disrupted the silence I had been enjoying in the car. I looked at the screen to see it was my boss at the mall I worked. At that point, I was reminded of all I had given up just for Cheryl’s birthday.
From the moment I answered the call, I could tell that my day was about to go from bad to worse. “I’m so sorry, Mr. Fletcher… I got caught up in a lot last night.”
“Of course you did…” he almost cut me off with his sharp response. That meant trouble. “And that’s part of the reasons I called you.”
I swallowed hard while bracing up for whatever punishment he was about to give for my absence. He was surely going to cut my pay for the rest of the month, and that was bad as I had spent it all on Cheryl.
“You’re fired, Asher…” the silence before that made it seem like he had given up on trying to find a polite way to say that. “I will have to let you go, Asher.”
“What…?” I didn’t understand if that was Neil at it again. Could he have gone as far as poisoning my boss’s mind like he had done the professor.
“Did last night make you go deaf as well? I said you’re fired.” He spoke with no form of pity in his tone. “I can’t have people walk into my store and see you at my cash register. With all these videos of you flying everywhere, you’re going to be bad news.”
“No…please… you can’t do this to me.” I was pleading with a really shaky voice as I was about to witness another part of my life get taken away from me.
“You think I can’t? You just watch me…” he hung up after that.
I felt like the rug had been pulled off from under my feet. The tears that had been building up since morning finally found a good place to escape my eyelids. They rolled down my cheeks freely as I couldn’t figure out what my next move would be. My mind was an empty page as I stared down at my feet.
Yet again, my phone went off to distract me from the deafening silence. I looked to see it was my sister and at once, I knew what it was. My heart sank as I recalled I had to send money for my sick mother’s upkeep.
At that point, I just wanted to run away and escape my harsh reality for a moment. I tossed my phone in the backseat, but it kept ringing. It had to be something that had gone terribly wrong. But what could have been more terribly wrong than last night?
“Hey man…” Theo tapped on the glass before he stepped into the car and sat at the driver’s seat. “It was a horrible test. I can’t wait to get home and…” he stopped as he noticed my tears and the phone ringing at the back. “What’s going on?”
“I just got fired.” I said tiredly through the tears. It was hard to breathe as there were just too many thoughts running through my head.
“Who’s on the phone?”
“My…sister…” I felt like I was using up the last bit of strength in my body while speaking to him. “I’m just…” I pushed the door open and ran out as i just couldn’t breathe anymore.
“Asher… where are you going?” Theo called, but I just kept running like all of my misfortune was running behind me.
I was looking for anywhere that I could hide from everyone and everything. Neil was surely laughing hard wherever he was watching my misery from. Along with Cheryl.
No other place came to my mind besides the basketball court. I was sure it would be empty by then. I'd never been a fan of suicidal thoughts but right there I was beginning to understand why people kill themselves. For the first time in my life I just wanted to stop existing.
By the time I got to the door leading to the basketball court I could hear the sound of people in there and that had me turning around at one.
Unfortunately I turned around to see people who seemed like they knew me and what had happened last night. Immediately I took off into one of the restrooms and closed the door behind me.
I turned on the tap and washed my face in a frantic attempt to make myself calm down. But it didn't work at all.
As I got tired of looking at my bruised face in the mirror, I looked at the watch on my wrist which was my father's gift to me before he died.
Then I began to seriously wonder why he had bothered bringing me into such a cruel existence. What the heck was I meant to do with my mother?
I closed my eyes, as the tap ran, reminding me of how quickly I was running out of time and options.
“Asher Coleman…” a feminine voice called out and for the third time my solitude was interrupted.
But when I opened my eyes, I was met by a bright blinding light that forced my eyes to close again. The light was just too close and it seemed to be coming out of my wristwatch.
“I am Pheme…”
“What the heck is going on?”

Asher's POV “Congratulations player, you just completed your second mission of assembling your band. You've just earned 200 points. Your reward is ten million dollars…”A good way to start a new day… I thought to myself as I was up on my feet at once. The door opened and Theo came walking in with two of the guys. “Your next mission is to go get yourselves a uniform attire for the team… but this time, you have twenty four hours to finish your task…”“Huh…?” I had no idea when I gasped out loud. “Are you alright, Asher?” Theo asked as the two guys he walked in with made themselves comfortable in his small living room. “Yeah…” I put on my best smile, while trying to hide the crazy urgency that had been shot up in my being by Pheme's notification. “I'm just feeling a bit dizzy. Just got up…” I turned to the crew members, “What's up guys?” “By the way…” Theo said, pointing at the skinnier one of them. “This is Jack, our main producer and wizard behind the keyboard…”“Nice to meet you,

Asher's POV “We need to start making moves Theo. Our dreams are closer than we think…” I took a moment to glance at Theo as I had been on the wheels for quite some time. “Are you okay?”He was silent, as he was probably yet to understand what the heck was going on. Just a moment ago we had been struggling with a busted car. And now we were in a brand new Porsche. “What's going on, Asher?” He finally broke the silence. “One minute you are looking like the most helpless person on the planet, the next moment you are driving me crazy in this Porsche.”I felt my heart skip a beat as I was thinking of what I would tell him without having to expose the entire secret. So many suggestions came and left my head, but none of them seemed to be able to suffice. At the same time I had to finish the next mission in time as I didn't want to get in trouble with Pheme on the same day I began. “Just calm down. This is nothing for you to overreact about.” I had to fill the silence up with something at
Chapter 7
Asher's POV “That was some crazy stuff you pulled off there…” Theo said as we got the last bit of equipment into the car. “Neil surely didn't see that coming.” “Of course he didn't…” I hadn't felt that level of satisfaction in a while. But my satisfaction was taken away each time I remembered that I would have to work with the system while keeping it secret from Theo. That was my biggest concern at the moment. “You had to see the look on his face when he just realized that he was going to pay for the building of a new cafeteria. That's sure to dig a deep hole in his pocket.” Theo laughed as we got in the car. Getting in the car made me remember what Neil had said about his car. I was suddenly aware of how uncomfortable it was there. “How about we get a new ride?” My words made Neil freeze. I watched his smile vanish as he had his hands on his steering. He stared at me like a mannequin for the next couple of seconds.“Say what?” Theo seemed so sure of the fact he had heard me wro
Chapter 6
Asher's POV“Look out Asher!”Pheme seemed to have made my reflexes as quick as lightning as I was able to duck just in time. The bag went flying over me to a window in the cafeteria behind, crashing the glass. Everyone went silent as they had no words for that sudden change of character from Neil. And I was glad I had caught it on my live stream. “Hashtag Neil is a bigger jerk than you think.” I said in Neil's face. Everything was playing out even better than I had expected from the start. “Hope you got that, Theo.”“Of course,” Theo said with a reassuring laugh. “And the comments are pouring in.”“You bastard…” Neil was red in the face as he soon realized just how much he had screwed up in that moment. “Take it down, now…!”“No way, I'm doing any of that.” I was ready to stand my ground as all of it was captured online. “Are you going to keep showing the whole world just how much of a jerk you are over a singing challenge with a loser?”I knew he couldn't send his men at me, as he
Chapter 5
Asher's POV “Damn what? Where have you been?” Theo couldn't hold back his worry as he barged into the bathroom door which I thought I had locked. “You had me scared for a moment Asher with the way you took off.”I was having a hard time staying at the moment as Pheme was suddenly gone, and the entire place was back to normal like nothing had happened at all. Now I was beginning to question if that had been reality or just some wishful part of my imagination coming to life. “Asher, are you even listening to anything I'm saying?” Theo called me back impatiently as he was completely annoyed by my sudden change of behavior. “I thought I told you not to let any of these get to you and now you are letting it make you crazy.”“I'm totally fine…” I looked at my watch and I could see the timer running already and that let me know that it was actually real. Along with my phone which had the notification of the alert I couldn't doubt it anymore. “I just needed to get my feet moving a bit.”The
Chapter 4
Asher’s POV“Ph… Pheme…?” I repeated the name with my eyes closed, regardless of how silly it sounded. I just couldn't stop thinking of what would happen if anyone happened to walk in at that moment. My fame would spread even more but for the wrong reasons. I feared that even more than the sudden light that had shot out of the watch on my wrist. All of that happening at the same time left me wondering why I was fated to be that unfortunate. After some moments, I mustered the courage to ask one of the many questions in my head. “What the heck is a Pheme?”“Ugh…” the feminine voice sighed. “It's not a thing, it's my name. Looks like I have an awful lot of work to do on you, Asher. You probably never paid attention in any of your history classes.”I became even more afraid as the ‘thing’ could talk back to me. Now I really wanted to open my eyes to see what was going on, but I was paralyzed by the fear. “You can open your eyes now and satisfy your curiosity…” the feminine voice spoke w
