Ch 09: The Heart Devil
last update2026-02-14 23:33:27

At 22:05, Bella brought Leon to the hospital, her expression full of worry. She herself didn’t understand why she was this worried about Leon. Was it because Leon’s face resembled the young master of the Vint family, planting a deep sense of sympathy in her heart? That was the question that briefly crossed her mind.

When they arrived at the hospital, the nurses there immediately tended to Leon, and some time later, Leon’s examination was complete.

“How is he, Senior?” Bella asked when the door opened and revealed a tall, somewhat muscular man stepping out.

“Let’s talk in my office,” the handsome man replied.

Bella then followed the man until they arrived at a room.

“Before I tell you his condition, I want to ask. Who is that man? I’ve never seen him before.”

Bella paused for a moment. The man in medical attire in front of her was Doctor Edward, her senior from college. Because of her beauty and intelligence, she had captured Edward’s heart.

Edward’s love story wasn’t as smooth as others’, because to this day, he still hadn’t won Bella’s love. The last time he confessed his feelings to Bella for the umpteenth time was when they were about to graduate. There, Bella still gave the same answer: she rejected him. Even so, Edward was still waiting for Bella to accept his love.

It wasn’t that Bella didn’t like Edward. If it were just about looks, Edward was no less handsome than Leon. But in her heart, she still hoped Leon wasn’t dead and would return someday. She didn’t know how long her heart would wait before growing weary, then let someone else enter.

“Um... he’s my distant relative,” Bella answered, her tone certain.

Edward was silent after hearing that. He then opened his computer and looked at Leon’s examination results.

“What was he doing before you found him unconscious?” Edward asked.

“I’m not sure. I was in the bathroom at the time.”

Hearing that statement, Edward paused his index finger on the mouse for a moment. "So, they live together? A distant relative? Why have I never known she had a distant relative?" Those questions made him zone out for a moment.

“Before I went to the bathroom, I left him eating smoked brisket. Or, maybe he’s allergic to beef?”

Edward turned his attention to Bella. “His condition is fine. His body is healthy. No history of illness, no history of allergies.”

Bella furrowed her brow for a moment. Fine? But earlier she had touched Leon’s body, and it felt like a hot pan.

“Look. These are the results we got after the examination. Everything’s normal,” Edward continued, showing the monitor to Bella.

Edward tried to explain the data displayed on his computer, making Bella listen and understand seriously. Yep, everything was normal.

“Maybe he fainted just from exhaustion. He’ll regain consciousness by tomorrow at the latest. Let him rest for now.”

Bella exhaled lightly and replied, “Um... alright.”

After that, Bella stood up and left the room.

As she walked with her back to Edward toward the door, Edward’s eyes seemed unwilling to leave the woman. He only shifted his gaze when Bella had truly left.

...

In the VIP room, a blackish-red aura still shrouded Leon’s body. Even now, small red lines like embers were visible on both his hands and neck, forming and connecting like veins.

Within his Sea of Consciousness, his soul existence was seen sitting cross-legged atop an ancient-designed circular altar. Around the altar stretched a pool of water, its color orange from the orange-tinged sky’s light.

Leon sat cross-legged without a shirt, clearly revealing his muscular form. Just like his physical body, the blackish-red aura and ember-like vein lines also shrouded his soul existence. This was the Heart Devil phenomenon, which brought out the cruel side within Leon.

In legend, although the existence of the Ancient Heavenly Body was extraordinary, those destined with that body found it extremely difficult to walk the path of cultivation. Even if they could cultivate, the consequence was that they could only reach the Purification level of the Transformation phase. If they forcefully broke through to the next level, a Heart Devil would form within their soul.

Ever since he broke through to the Amplification level, Leon had only survived the Heart Devil because of the seal Master Lu placed on him. Although the seal wasn’t easily destroyed, unwanted things could still happen, like what Leon was experiencing now.

Fundamentally, the Heart Devil was powerful. What was attacking Leon now was only a trace of its aura. So, the only solution was for Leon to find a way to defeat and eradicate the Heart Devil.

If he didn’t find a way soon, his origin soul would continue to be eroded, slowly until it was gone. As a result, his soul existence would be taken over and he would truly become a bloodthirsty devil.

On the bed, unconscious, Leon writhed like a worm under scorching heat. The pain felt by his soul existence made his physical body uncomfortable. If he could scream, he probably would be screaming in pain right now.

Some time later, his body slowly calmed, but the blackish-red aura still shrouded him. Suddenly...

BOOM

A burst of spiritual energy exploded, sending wind in all directions, slightly shifting objects around him, as Leon suddenly opened his eyes wide. His pupils glowed red, like a terrifying monster awakened from its slumber.

On the other hand, Bella walked down the corridor. She looked unfocused on the path ahead, to the point she accidentally bumped into an older man.

"Ah, sorry," Bella said spontaneously.

The older man just looked at Bella with a slight frown. He shook his head faintly for a moment and walked away.

Bella sighed before taking another step.

"I should be resting tonight. Unfortunately, so many unexpected things happened. Now, I even have to take care of a stranger I haven’t known for a day."

"But why do I feel like I have to take care of him? No. Bella, when he wakes up tomorrow, you have to find him a place to live. He’s no one. It’s not proper for a man to live with a woman."

As she said those words in her heart, Bella suddenly realized she was already in front of Leon’s room. Without hesitation she opened the door, but immediately furrowed her brow when she saw the room was somewhat messy.

"Huh? Leon?!" she exclaimed.

Leon was still trying to process what was really happening. Why wouldn’t his card work? Was Frander trying to trick him?At this point, Bella should have been wondering why the card wasn’t working. Because as far as she knew, the card was hers—and she would have known for sure whether it was still valid or not. If the payment failed, the most likely reason would be insufficient funds, not that the card itself was unusable.Unfortunately, Bella didn’t get a chance to think that far. Her mind was a mess from all the unexpected events of the day."That can’t be right—try swiping it again," Leon said, refusing to accept it.Bella just stayed quiet, seeming to calm herself down. Her thoughts felt scattered, and the sounds around her seemed to fade into the background for a moment. After swiping the card a second time, the cashier shook their head. This time, their previously friendly expression turned cold. What was the point of insisting? If you didn’t have the money, you should just leav

In his mind, Leon thought the earlier warning should have been enough to scare the man off. But when he glanced at Hanna and saw her expression, he immediately understood what was really going on.Hanna had always been cunning and manipulative. It didn’t take much to figure out she’d egged her boyfriend on, making him regain his confidence. What made Leon even angrier was that this time, Hanna hadn’t just come with Henri—she’d brought two more friends along, who just happened to be their former middle school classmates too."What are you doing here again?" Bella asked sharply. She automatically handed back the black card she’d taken from Leon earlier, then faced Hanna, Henri, and their two middle school friends—Penny and Viona—square on."Why shouldn’t I be here? Everyone has the right to come in," Hanna shot back. Her face was full of arrogance and pride, a sly smile curving at the corner of her mouth."Oh, so this is the boyfriend you were talking about?" Viona cut in. She looked at
