5. Let's Be Strangers

The next day, Liam only woke up when he felt his head being tugged on. As he opened his eyes to his sister’s familiar eyes, he couldn’t help the joy that rushed through him.

“Rose,” he groaned out, his voice still husky from just waking up.

“Brother.”

Rose's eyes teared up as she looked at how tired her brother looked. Although he looked a little better after a night's rest, it was still not enough to hide all the stress that he had been through in the last few days.

Her heart ached for her brother terribly.

“Rose, how do you feel? The doctor said the attack was a mild one?” Liam asked.

Without waiting for her reply, Liam rushed to check around her, as though, by doing that, he would be able to tell if she was fine.

Rose smiled gently as she saw his worried expression.

“I know my body best. I’m fine right now.” She was in a little bit of pain but she didn’t dare to tell him as she didn’t want him to worry.

Liam finally calmed down and sat down beside her while holding her hands.

For the first time in a while, they chatted about random things. Many unfortunate things had been happening to Liam, but he didn’t dare tell her any of these and instead made up some happy stories.

“Did Lily really agree to give you the money?” Rose asked, her voice filled with disbelief.

She knew her brother’s girlfriend and knew that Lily was the type of person to want all the benefits for herself. Hearing that she was willing to give Liam came as a shock to her.

Liam nodded. However, in his mind, he could see that he had really been blind in the past. Even his sister, who had met Lily a few times, could tell that she wasn’t the generous type!

After bonding for a while, Liam left the hospital. At the end of the day, he still had to find money for the hospital bills.

Unlike yesterday, he didn’t plan to take out loans anymore.

He was going back to Lily.

Regardless of anything, they were partners; it would be bad if he had to be with a woman who couldn’t help in times of trouble.

Besides, all of the money that she had taken. He couldn’t just let it go just like that.

With that thought, Liam left after Rose had eaten breakfast and thanked everyone in her ward and the nurses.

When he got back to their apartment, after seeing that it was locked, Liam used his key to open the door.

His mouth fell open as he took in the scene before him. The entire living space was completely empty.

It was like they had simply packed out of this house and he had just come back to pick something up.

Liam rubbed his eyes once and even pinched himself twice to be sure. After all, he had been here yesterday, and everything was normal.

How could it be just an empty space in a few hours?

Still shocked, he simply went out back to be sure that he had the right apartment. When Liam entered the second time, his eyes had reddened as he checked the apartment one more time.

Although the apartment had not been lavishly furnished previously, it was still comfortable and had some gadgets to make their daily life easy.

But Lily seemed to have cleared out everywhere.

Without thinking, he called Lily. The phone rang twice before it disconnected, allowing him to know that she had declined the call.

Liam called three more times before Lily finally picked up the call.

“Liam, we have ended things. Why are you still calling me?” She asked with a slight slur and Liam frowned.

“What do you mean we have ended things? Why don’t I remember this?” He felt that even if they had ended things. They weren’t married so it made no sense that she had taken everything that he had for herself.

Lily cackled with laughter on the other end of the call, “I know you don’t want to, but if one party is no longer willing, hasn’t the relationship ended like that?”

“Besides, don’t you think I have tried? I stayed with a low level person like you for three years, it’s more than enough time for us to go our separate ways, after all; you have helped me build my grades to a point where I don’t need you anymore.”

Liam’s eyes darkened and his hands around the phone clenched tightly at Lily’s words.

To have the woman that he loved and cherished for three years look down on him in this manner…

“Lily, what’s wrong with you, this isn’t you…” it must be those friends that she used to move around with.

Lily scoffed from the other end of the call. “There’s no need for me to pretend anymore Liam. A man like you is not worth staying with. Do you think I’ll ruin my life by spending my youth with you?”

“I’ll tell you this: in the last three years, you have enjoyed having me as your woman, and in return, you have helped me with my grades. The two of us are even…” she paused and made a slight hum from her end of the call.

“After now, let’s be strangers. You go your own way, and I go my own way.”
