Chapter 2: The VIP Ward
last update2026-09-15 13:19:21

The towering glass complex of Central Metropolitan Hospital glowed beneath the rain, its massive white cross pulsing softly against the night sky. For months, this building had been Kaleb’s personal house of horrors—a place where clinical coldness met endless financial despair.

He stepped through the sliding automatic doors, his soaked clothes dripping rainwater onto the pristine marble floor. The sharp smell of antiseptic filled his nose.

At the central reception desk, Nurse Brenda—a sharp-tongued woman who had threatened to discharge Kaleb's mother three times this week alone— sat reviewing medical billing ledgers on her tablet.

When she noticed Kaleb approaching, her eyebrows pulled down into an irritated scowl. "Kaleb? What are you doing here at this hour? If you’re here to beg for another extension on your mother's ICU fees, don't bother. Dr. Sterling already signed the transfer papers. She gets moved to the hospice ward tomorrow morning."

"She stays in the ICU," Kaleb said, his voice unusually steady and calm.

Brenda let out a harsh, mock scoff. "With what money? Your mother’s outstanding balance is $48,000! You haven't paid a single cent in two weeks. Unless you magically stumbled upon a pile of gold in the street, stop wasting my time and get out."

Without saying a word, Kaleb reached into his pocket, pulled out his black debit card, and slid it across the marble counter.

"Clear the entire $48,000 balance," Kaleb said quietly. "And transfer her to the top-floor VIP ICU Suite immediately."

Brenda stared at the card, then at Kaleb’s rain-soaked, ragged clothes. A sneer touched her lips. "Is this a joke to you? Attempting to fraud a hospital payment system is a federal offense, Kaleb. If this card declines, I'm calling security."

"Swipe it," Kaleb commanded, his eyes flashing with a subtle, golden glint.

Brenda snatched the card with an annoyed sigh and swiped it through the terminal, tapping in the amount of $48,000. She waited for the inevitable Declined error to flash across the screen so she could call the guards.

BEEP!

The machine gave a crisp, cheerful chime. A receipt began printing out smoothly.

Transaction Approved. Remaining Balance: $952,124.15 USD.

Brenda froze. Her eyes went wide as saucers, her hands trembling as she grabbed the printed slip. She looked at the transaction approval code, then at the green screen, and back at Kaleb. Her face went completely pale.

"F-Forty-eight thousand dollars... approved?" she stammered, her voice dropping two octaves as her arrogant attitude instantly shattered into dust. "M-Mr. Kaleb... I... I apologize! I didn't realize—"

"I said, move her to the VIP Suite," Kaleb interrupted, his tone colder than ice. "Now."

"Y-Yes, sir! Right away! I’ll notify Dr. Sterling immediately!" Brenda scrambled frantically, hitting the intercom button with shaking fingers.

Ten minutes later, Kaleb stood inside a spacious, state-of-the-art VIP medical room on the 30th floor. Soft ambient lighting replaced the harsh fluorescent bulbs of the public ward. His mother, Elena, lay peacefully on a luxury medical bed, surrounded by advanced monitoring equipment. Her breathing was slow and shallow, her face pale from months of battling a rare, degenerative organ disease.

Kaleb walked over to the side of the bed and gently took her fragile, thin hand in his.

"Mom... you're going to be okay now," Kaleb whispered, a lump forming in his throat. "Nobody is ever going to push us around again."

He focused his gaze on his mother. Instantly, the golden hue of his Godly Eye activated, scanning her frail frame:

[Target: Elena Vance]

[Current Condition: Severe Organ Toxicity, Advanced Cell Degradation]

[Medical Prognosis: Standard treatment success rate: 12%. Life expectancy: 14 days.]

[System Diagnostic: The target's condition can be 100% cured using 'Basic Vitality Elixir' from the System Shop.]

[Shop Unlock Requirement: Reach Host Level 2.]

Kaleb’s heart leaped with pure joy. A complete cure! His mother wasn't dying—she just needed him to level up!

Just then, the door to the VIP suite slid open. A middle-aged doctor with a pompous stride walked in, flanked by two junior residents. It was Dr. Sterling, the chief physician who had previously treated Kaleb like invisible dirt.

"Well, well, Kaleb," Dr. Sterling said, tapping his tablet with a condescending smile. "I heard you somehow settled the bill. Quite a surprise for a dishwasher. But don't get too confident. Moving her to VIP doesn't change the medical reality. Her organ failure is irreversible. She has two weeks at best."

Dr. Sterling patted Kaleb’s shoulder with fake sympathy. "If you want my advice, don't waste your remaining money on useless ICU stays. Accept the inevitable."

Kaleb looked at Dr. Sterling, activating his Godly Eye:

[Target: Dr. Richard Sterling]

[Secret Details: Currently taking illegal kickbacks from 'PharmaCorp' to push experimental, ineffective drugs on critically ill patients. Falsified Elena Vance's progress reports to keep her in critical care longer for financial extraction.]

Kaleb’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure fury as the glowing text floated before him. This corrupt doctor was intentionally keeping his mother sick for money!

Slowly, Kaleb removed Dr. Sterling's hand from his shoulder, gripping the doctor's wrist tightly.

"Is that so, Dr. Sterling?" Kaleb said softly, his voice dripping with danger. "What if I told you I know all about your secret accounts with PharmaCorp?"

Dr. Sterling’s smug smile instantly vanished, replaced by a look of sheer terror.Dr. Sterling tried to yank his hand back, but Kaleb’s grip was like a vice made of solid steel. The chief physician’s face flushed red, then drained of color entirely as he stared into Kaleb’s icy, golden-tinted eyes.

"W-What are you talking about?" Dr. Sterling stammered, his voice trembling despite his attempt to sound authoritative. "PharmaCorp? You’re delusional! Let go of me before I call security!"

"Call them," Kaleb said calmly, leaning in closer. "Let's invite the police, too. We can ask them to check account number 8821 at Swiss Global Bank—the one where you received a $150,000 kickback last Thursday for prescribing toxic trial drugs to my mother."

Dr. Sterling’s jaw dropped. Sweat beaded on his forehead, trickling down his temple. How could a broke twenty-two-year-old dishwasher possibly know the exact account number and the precise transaction amount? That information was encrypted on an offshore server!

"Y-You..." Dr. Sterling gasped, terror suffocating his chest. "How do you know that?"

"I know everything," Kaleb cold-stared him down. "I know you falsified my mother’s lab results to delay her recovery, bleeding my wallet dry while poisoning her system. If my mother suffers even a minor complication over the next 24 hours, those bank statements and falsified medical records will be sent directly to the Medical Board and the Federal Bureau of Investigation."

"Please! No!" Dr. Sterling squeaked, his arrogant demeanor completely shattered. He dropped his head, shaking uncontrollably. "I’ll assign the top medical team! I’ll personally oversee her care! I won't charge a single penny for her stay! Just... please don't ruin me!"

"Get out of my sight," Kaleb snapped, releasing the doctor’s wrist.

Dr. Sterling stumbled backward, nearly tripping over his own feet, and scrambled out of the VIP suite like a terrified rat, his two junior residents rushing behind him in absolute confusion.

Quietness returned to the room. The rhythmic, steady beep of the heart monitor filled the air.

Kaleb sat down in the leather armchair beside his mother’s bed. He pulled out his smartphone and opened the banking app once more. Seeing the $952,124 balance gave him a sense of security he had never experienced in his entire life, but he knew money alone wasn't enough to survive in a city as ruthless as Eldoria. Darian and his corrupt political family controlled the police, the media, and the underground syndicates. If Darian found out Kaleb had suddenly acquired a fortune, he wouldn't hesitate to crush him.

'I need power,' Kaleb thought, his jaw tightening. 'Real power.'

DING!

[System Quest Triggered!]

[Quest Objective: Level Up to Level 2.]

[Requirement: Acquire a legitimate business asset in Eldoria and reach 100 XP.]

[Quest Reward: Unlocks System Shop + 1x 'Basic Vitality Elixir' (100% Organ Cure) + $5,000,000 Investment Fund.]

Kaleb’s eyes widened. Acquiring a business asset was the key to unlocking the cure for his mother!

He immediately tapped his phone screen and searched for commercial property listings in the central district. A particular listing caught his attention:

FOR IMMEDIATE AUCTION: The Nightshade Club - A premier two-story lounge and entertainment venue in central Eldoria. Liquidation price: $500,000.

According to the listing details, The Nightshade Club was previously owned by an independent businessman who was recently forced into bankruptcy by local gang extortion. The auction was taking place tonight at the Grand Horizon Hotel—just three blocks away.

"A lounge in the central district..." Kaleb murmured, a sharp grin forming on his lips. "Perfect."

He stood up, adjusted his jacket, and looked down at his mother. "Hold on just a little longer, Mom. By tomorrow, I'll bring you the cure."

Kaleb turned on his heel and strode out of the hospital suite. As he stepped out into the midnight rain of Eldoria, his golden eyes gleamed with cold determination. It was time to start building his empire
