When my eyes eventually refocused I found myself in a small square paved with stone. Stone piers jutted out into the sea. As I turned around I saw a five meter tall stone wall blocking our view towards the town.

Out in the harbour there were fifty small fishing ships that didn’t look particularly impressive. There were also five bigger ships with three cannons mounted on them. As well as ten ships that could pass for trading ships. So in total there were sixty five ships, with fifty captains I presume.

“Hello everyone, I am a Captain that is looking for warriors and marksman for my crew. The Captain’s only have five crew slots and there is about five thousand of us here. So be quick everyone.” It was a same skinny shifty eyed youth. But rushing to select crew, and only warriors and marksman shows his lack of future planning.

The smart people wouldn’t actually rush into their selections. Making the right choice at the start and carefully considering all their options would be better. The ideal I am looking for in my crew.

The second most important requirement would be how they view the natives. Having a crew that frequently is at odds with the natives would be detrimental to our future growth. The only way to grow stably is to work with the natives. They have a lot more information about the world than we do. Based on what I can see, the natives have more than enough power to exterminate us if they want to. At least that was my thoughts based on initial judgements from the bit of information I could deduce from the surroundings.

I turned my view back to the stone wall and as I scanned along the wall, I saw the gate. First step, acquire information, second step, find a job for income, third step, select crew. Initial plan set.

As I started walking towards the gate I attracted the attention of two people, seeing my destination they decided to follow me instead of joining the crazy mess behind me as forty nine Captains urgently tried to recruit warriors and marksman. The other classes were trying to make their case for joining the crew even though they were not warriors or marksman as well.

Based on what I could see, more than fifty percent of the people that descended were warriors and marksman, meaning these classes were abundant and the other classes were much rarer. With mages being the rarest as the Sea God mentioned.

I turned my gaze to the two people following me, a fiery redhead with a great figure and a gaze that could make a bear terrified. Seems like she is also being careful in selecting a Captain and doesn’t want to get caught up in the mess and selected for her looks. As for the man, standing at a height above two meters with blonde hair. He is built like a tank, a brute, but his eyes only conveyed caution and intellect.

Promising candidates indeed, they may be worthwhile members. “Why are the two of you following me? By the way my name is Jerry” I asked as I introduced myself.

“The name is Jess, getting caught up in this mess wouldn’t be conductive to living in this world. The only things these Captains care about is how many sea beasts they can kill. They don’t seem like they have a plan beyond that, going into town for information seems like a better route,” the fiery redhead said as she introduced herself.

Seems like she is also being cautious and is trying to acquire knowledge before making a choice. Seems like she knows she can get a spot on a crew but making the right choice requires more knowledge.

“The name is Thad, if I go to those Captains the only thing they will do is hide behind me from the sea beasts, that’s not the type of Captain that I want.” The big blonde man said as he introduced himself, seems he was a warrior as well and probably focused on defensive skills.

But he knows he will only be used as a meat shield if he goes with those Captains. Seems the Captains scrambling for warriors and marksman have made a mistake, while there are more crew members than the Captains need at the moment, the smart and talented individuals who would actually make a difference won’t be interested in the current set up they have gone for.

As we were talking we reached the gate where four guardsman were keeping an eye on the chaos in the square. I approached the guard who seemed to be in charge and cautiously asked him, “Excuse me sir, are there any requirements to entering the town.”

“Not currently, but if you cause any trouble we will throw you in the jail. If the offence is serious enough we will throw you in the sea and let the beasts take care of you.” He replied in a carefree manner, but the threat was clear. Behave or die. “Otherwise welcome to Pacling Isle”

“Is there a library in the town or someplace where we can acquire information?” I asked him now that our positions had been made.

“Our town is too small for a library, I suggest heading to the Merchant’s Guild. Just go straight the central square and it will be the big building on the left. The big building in front will be the town hall, while the big building on the right is the barracks and jail.” He replied.

“Thank you.” I said leading my two companions past towards the Merchant Guild when a question from Jess struck me dumb.

“Can we afford anything at the merchants guild.”

Her question took me off guard as I browsed my person, noticing a small pouch on my right side. I touched it to see a panel come up [Coin Purse:5g]. Thankfully we descended with money, otherwise this would be a disaster. Seems to be special container as well.

The Kragmag’s were approximately half a meter, these Demon Crabs were closer to a 1 meter size, so it shows that they had a higher rating. “Demon Crabs, large pincers ideal for attacking, weak shells, weak points are the head, centre chest and belly. Drake start firing immediately,” I calmly instructed. Waiting for the Kragmag’s to get within 50m was due to their low numbers, with the extra numbers on the Demon Crabs, more kills at range will only help us.Fortunately when our eyesight had started to return to normal we ate the food Gordon had prepared earlier, so our eyesight and stamina recovery buffs were fresh. Not waiting for Drake to align his shot, I quickly aimed at the nearest Demon Crab and pulled the trigger. I hit it in the throat and with no feeling of skill activation, I knew that it was not a kill shot.I saw the one I hit visibly slowly down. Might still be a fatal wound but a slow kill. Reloading and aiming at a second one I hea

As finished laying out the general plan for the night I walked to Jess’s side and whispered quietly to her, “I would prefer making you the battle commander as I did see how well u managed the ship while I was asleep, but Jacks class is better suited to be battle commander as he can look around to see the overall situation. If you look around you could put your life at risk.” As she listened quietly to my explanation without looking at me, I saw the frustration in her eyes gradually fading away.“If he tries to lord his battle commander status over me, I can’t promise that I won’t throw him off the ship, or stab him,” She eventually responded. From her tone and eyes it seems that she was in a better mood.“When the crew becomes bigger I am planning on having three officers, a first mate, a second mate, and a battle commander. Might also add a quartermaster. Currently you are the top choice for first mate, but becoming firs

“Boss, time to wake up” Gordon shouted while knocking loudly on my cabin door.“I’m awake” I responded groggily. I have never woken up easily. “I saw that you hadn’t eaten your breakfast yet, so there are three portions of food in the canteen for you, the rest of us have eaten. Two of the portions are foods with buffs, stamina and sight,” Gordon told me as I heard him walking away.Opening the daily summary too see what has happened while I was asleep, and to estimate how long I was asleep, I got a pleasant surprise.[Nautical Miles Sailed 24, Total Exp 24][Nautical Miles Sailed 24. I had already informed Gordon that every person could only get 5L of water per day. As he was the ship chef, he was in charge of the food supplies and water. As I inspected my rifle, I also inspected myself. The lot of us had long since donned our armour, I had a light leather chest guard, bracers and shin guards over my tracksuit pants and t-shirt. I also had two pouches on my right side as well as a flask on the other side. A coin purse and an ammunition pouch. We hadn’t received any new clothes when we descended. We all descended with what we were wearing. Fortunately people were mostly in jeans or tracksuits. I didn’t see anyone in a suit or dress.Back to the rifle, I had taken a customary look at the rifle previously but had gotten preoccupied with other things before I could fully inspect it. Opening the ammunition pouch on my side, I removed a single iron ball, looks like an old fashioned musket setup but without using gunpowder. The rifle ha

We heroically stayed up the entire night… As if. As the sun rose and the light started shining on my face I slowly woke up groggily from my sleep. I had a very soft pillow below my head.Opening my eyes and seeing spots as the light was directly in my eyes, I shielded my eyes from the sun. What’s the last thing that I can remember? We were planning to stay awake the entire night so we could adjust our sleep schedule to what seems to be the norm for sailors in this world. Suffice to say, we all fell asleep. I think we made it to midnight. Well we were all normal young adults yesterday so not surprising. But where did I get the pillow? As I turned my head to the side I saw a pair of shapely legs spreading out from underneath my head. So I fell asleep with my head on Jess’s lap. Must’ve fallen sideways when I fell asleep.Carefully sitting up to ensure that I did not wake her, I took a look around. Gordon and Drake were cuddling while they

  • Chapter 10: The crew and the last night

As I closed the book, I sorted through the important information in my head. I sighed as I contemplated the scenarios that could occur between the descenders and nobles. If the nobles think they can lord it over us or treat us as peasants, then they may be in for a rude awakening. Getting the commoner’s to revolt wouldn’t be too difficult if we employ some propaganda from our history, such as freedom of speech and right to education.Hearing a noise from the gangplank, I turned my head and saw my crew stepping onto the ship. It seems that they all got something to eat. They looked satisfied though Jess was holding two skewers of grilled fish. Walking to me she handed me the skewers while saying, “Got you something to eat, seemed like you weren’t even prepared to stop until u finished with your ship inspection.”Taking the skewers and feeling my stomach grumble, I looked at her as I mentioned my thanks, while taking a big bite. Fish and sal
