Chapter 2: Shocked to hear

Derek was desperate and called his colleague, who picked the call this time around.

Derek moved straight to the point. He wouldn't miss his opportunity as he had helped this person at work all the time.

"I'm in police custody. I just got a chance to speak with you now. I wanted you to help me with a hundred and fifty dollars for my bail. I'll pay you back after getting my salary."

"Come on. How much do you earn that you are talking of paying back?" Derek detected that he was mocking him.

Though knowing this, there was nothing he can do because he wants to get the money.

"I helped you rotate so many shifts.." Derek said to the phone, "You know what kind of a person I am, and I will definitely pay you back."

“Do I?” His colleague laughed out loud, "I have told the boss that you are absent from work today. I guess you won't have this job anymore, let alone this $150 to pay me back. Good luck to you at the police office, I guess."

Derek was still clutching the phone as it was being hung up. He knew his colleague was already exploiting him, but he never anticipated him to be so heartless.

“Someone is looking for you, Derek.” A police called him loudly.

Derek looked up and was shocked to find none other than his beautiful wife, Tahlia.

"Here is the money," She handed the money, a fifty dollar and one hundred dollar notes to Derek, "I heard that from my mom."

Overwhelmed with gratitude, Derek's eyes gleamed with joy, and his face lit up with a grin. "Thank you so much!" he exclaimed, promised, "I'll return it as soon as I'm paid."

She didn't say anything, but there was only a bitter smile on her face. She didn't believe that Derek would ever have the money to pay back.

Derek noticed, but he could only say to her silently in his heart - Honey, I won't let you suffer.

He rushes over to the COP's office. He remembers that he told him to come only when he got the money.

"Sir, here is the money." He hands over the money to him. He takes it and makes a call to one of his officers.

"Inspector Peter, cancel Derek Dawson's from the list of individuals in custody and sign the bail certificate for him. He's now released as he has paid the bail fee."

Just this statement and Derek is released. Derek is happy to be out of jail. He can now reunite with his family, even when they didn't agree to help him. He walks to the waiting room, but he saw his mother-in-law standing there, unexpectedly.

"You worthless punk." Gianna rushed over to him as soon as she saw him, slapped him hard in the face, "You freeload in my house, take my money, cheat on my daughter. You're a disgrace!"

“I've never....” Derek was about to protest anything but got interrupted.

"What a useless man you are!" She yelled to him. Then turning to her daughter, "I've told you not to marry this man, he is worthless and not good for you!"

His mother-in-law pretended to cry so loudly that everyone else in the room looked over silently and whispered.

"I want you to do me a favor." Gianna turned to her daughter.

"What's that mom?" Tahlia asked.

"Divorce this useless man this week. I'll help you start a new life with my family's support. You deserve someone better than this trash."

Her voice was cold and serious, leaving no doubt that she meant every word.
