The keening from the surface had intensified into a rhythmic, drill-like vibration that rattled the loose gravel on the subway tracks. Maya pulled away, but only to grab her tactical harness. The heated, defiant haze of their encounter in the tunnel dissipated, replaced by the razor-sharp coldness of a soldier preparing for a suicide run. She tossed a spare pulse-emitter to Reza, her movements precise and economy-driven.

"Check the charge," she commanded, her eyes already scanning the dark mouth of the maintenance service elevator they had pried open.

Reza caught the device, the weight of it familiar now. He checked his own HUD; the gold flicker was settling, the System still hovering on the edge of a reprimand but currently dormant. "Status?"

"Locked in," Maya said, tapping her wrist gauntlet. "I burned the encryption keys from their local node during the purge. We’re ghosts to their security system for exactly twelve minutes."

"Twelve minutes to get to the command center," Reza muttered, a grim smile touching his lips. He stood, feeling the familiar, overclocked hum of the System surging beneath his skin. "That’s plenty of time to break everything."

They ascended through the service shaft, the air growing progressively colder as they bypassed the outer shell of the facility. The architecture here was different—less concrete and steel, more bio-organic integration. The walls pulsed with thin, vein-like filaments of violet light, and the floor beneath their feet felt like semi-solid, cooling muscle. It was as if the command center itself was a living, breathing creature.

When they reached the secondary entrance, Maya didn't hesitate. She slid a data-spike into the port. A moment later, the heavy seal—a mass of shifting, chitinous plates—slid aside with a wet, grinding sound.

They moved into the corridor as a single unit. It was a kill-box. Immediately, half a dozen perimeter guards—hollow-eyed, cybernetically enhanced drones in sleek, obsidian armor—turned toward them. They didn't shout; they didn't offer warnings. They moved with a terrifying, calculated silence, their weapons emitting a faint, high-frequency whine.

"Left!" Maya yelled, her voice snapping like a whip.

Reza didn't think; he reacted. He vaulted over a control console, his body a blur of motion fueled by the System’s acceleration. He caught the first guard mid-swing, driving his composite shard into the gap at the creature’s neck. The feedback loop was instant; he felt the creature's nervous system spike as he tore through the connection, the body collapsing into a heap of twitching limbs.

Maya was a whirlwind of lethal efficiency. She moved with a fluid, balletic grace, her serrated blade finding the joints in the guards' armor with surgical precision. She was brutal, ignoring the spray of dark ichor, her eyes locked onto the objective.

"They’re calling for backup!" she shouted, parrying a lunging guard and kicking its knee out from under it. "We have to move faster!"

Reza pushed his limits. He could feel the System’s warning lights flashing—Stress levels: Critical—but he leaned into the pain. The adrenaline provided by the synergy with Maya was a drug, a shared, high-voltage current that kept them moving beyond human capability. They fought through the guards, their movements mirroring each other in a deadly, rhythmic dance. Every parry, every strike was perfectly timed to cover the other’s blind spot.

By the time they reached the main doors of the inner sanctum, they were covered in a slick sheen of violet fluid and sweat. The corridor behind them was a graveyard of broken, twitching chassis.

"Twelve minutes is up," Reza breathed, his chest heaving. "Hope you’re good at improvising."

Maya looked at him, her hair plastered to her forehead, her eyes glowing with that intense, predatory heat that had become their hallmark. She reached out, her gloved hand gripping the back of his neck, pulling him into her space for a brief, bruising second.

"I’m done improvising," she whispered against his lips, her touch fierce and possessive. "Let’s finish this."

They kicked the double doors open.

The sanctum was vast, a circular chamber dominated by a single, terrifying feature. There were no command desks, no tactical displays, and no leadership. In the center of the room, suspended in a massive, transparent sphere, hung an energy core. It was a pulsating, chaotic knot of pure shadow and light, shifting in size and color like a dying sun. The hum it emitted was so profound that Reza felt his very bones vibrating.

"It’s empty," Reza said, his voice echoing in the chamber. He scanned the room, his eyes darting to the monitors that lined the walls—they were all blank, save for a single, repeating line of code: FEEDBACK LOOP REQUIRED.

Maya walked toward the sphere, her weapon lowered. "They weren't here to lead, Reza. They were here to grow it. This core... it’s a parasite. It needs a high-intensity synaptic connection to mature."

Reza approached the sphere, the golden light in his vision turning a jagged, warning red. He could feel it pulling at him, a gravitational hunger that clawed at his consciousness. "It’s hungry," he muttered, his hand reaching out, his fingers trembling as they hovered inches from the cold glass.

"It’s the System’s heart," Maya said, her voice dropping to a low, melodic tremor. She stood beside him, her presence a grounding weight. She looked at the core, then at him, her gaze filled with a desperate, beautiful realization. "It’s been waiting for two synced signatures to feed on."

Reza looked at her, his pulse racing, the proximity of their bodies and the hum of the core creating a feedback loop that made the air between them shimmer. The System in his head was screaming, a symphony of errors, but he ignored the noise. He reached out and took Maya’s hand.

"If we touch it," Reza whispered, his voice steadying despite the chaos, "we’re going to be the ones in control, aren't we?"

Maya looked at him, her eyes wide, a dark, cynical smile breaking across her face. "Or we’re going to be the ones who end it all. Either way, no one tells us what to do anymore."

They tightened their grip on each other’s hands, their fingers interlacing. As they pressed their palms against the surface of the sphere, the chamber exploded in a blinding, violet light that swallowed them whole, the last thing they heard being the shattering of the core, and the silent, perfect synchronization of their hearts.

The shockwave from the core’s implosion had subsided, leaving behind a silence so absolute it felt like a physical weight pressing against Reza’s eardrums. He was still kneeling, his fingers locked with Maya’s, his lungs burning from the ozone-heavy air that smelled of scorched circuits and ionized space. The facility around them was in its death throes, the metallic girders screaming as they twisted and buckled into shapes that defied Euclidean geometry."Reza, focus!" Maya’s voice cut through the ringing in his head. She was pulling at his hand, her knuckles white, her eyes darting to the structural ruins overhead. "The entire station is de-syncing. We’re being pulled into the wake of the gate."He shook his head, trying to clear the static-filled fog in his vision. The server room floor was cold, a stark contrast to the lingering heat radiating from Maya’s skin. Reza pushed himself up, his muscles singing with the new efficiency the System had granted him. He felt dangerous—a coiled spring of synthetic adrenaline and refined focus. Maya didn’t linger on the sentiment of their connection; she was already cinching the straps of her tactical rig, her eyes shifting from the soft, searching gaze of a lover back to the cold, analytical stare of a survivor."Check your gear," Maya said, her voice clipped. She handed him a jagged piece of hardened composite—a shard of armor plating she’d salvaged from the server racks. "It isn't a blade, but it’ll punch through a carapace if you put your weight behind it."Reza gripped the shard, feeling the weight balance perfectly in his palm. "Where to?""The transit hub," she replied, heading for the heavy lobby doors. "If the city is as infected as the prison, the underground lines are our best bet for moving fast
