The free-fall sensation felt like forcibly ripping Arthur's heart out of his throat. The cold wind blew hard against his face as he plummeted rapidly into the darkness.

Thud.

The four of them hit the bottom of the ravine hard. But it was not a solid stone floor that welcomed their bodies, rather a thick pile of wet straw. Unfortunately, the straw was mixed with chunks of rotten meat, feces, and massive bones.

Lyra screamed loudly as her face landed right next to an animal skull that had turned

The Broken Plains used to be an expanse of green grasslands that was the pride of Eldoria's southern border. But tonight, the place had turned into a frozen mudflat decorated with black craters left behind by explosive magic. The sky above them was still glowing an intensely blood-red color. One hundred thousand elite Sylverian soldiers stood in layered defensive formations across the plains. On their right wing, tens of thousands of rebel dwarves from the remnants of the Khaz Grom cartel had built makeshift sandbag barricades. The dwarves had arranged hundreds of steam cannons and homemade machine guns with their muzzles aimed straight ahead. On top of a wooden watchtower hastily built in the middle of the formation, Lyra stood facing the expanse of darkness. The human girl wore a leather armor cloak that was far too big for her body. In her hand, she held a magic megaphone connected directly to the helmets of all the elf and dwarf commanders on the field."Tighten the front lines, w

  • Chapter 36 The Blood Sky and Three Million Deaths

The sweet smell of roses and herbal potions stung Arthur's nose. For the first time since he had walked into that old wooden wardrobe at his school, he did not smell blood, sulfur, or filth.Arthur slowly opened his eyes. The ceiling above him was beautifully painted, depicting the history of the elven race. He was lying on an incredibly soft silk bed. His body, from his neck down to his feet, was wrapped in clean white bandages that smelled of painkillers. The pain in his ribs had significantly lessened."If you want to die, don't do it on this expensive bed, WTF," a very familiar, raspy voice sounded from the corner of the room.Arthur turned his head. Bramble was sitting in a velvet chair with his feet propped up on a marble table. The giant weasel was chugging wine from a gold-plated crystal bottle. His leather armor had been replaced with a new set that was much sturdier and shinier."How long was I out, damn it?" Arthur's voice was extremely hoarse. He tried to sit up. His abdom

  • Chapter 35 The Ashes of Betrayal and the Bloody Throne

The explosion of pure golden light swallowed everything. Its rumbling sound was unlike that of a gunpowder bomb, resembling instead the roar of thousands of dragons of light, shattering eardrums. Because the distance was literally zero centimeters, the damage was absolute and could not be blocked by any magic.General Valerius's majestic royal armor, forged from high-tier steel, melted instantly like a cheap candle. Malakor's cursed black sword, tightly gripped in Arthur's left hand, shattered into pieces, turning into disgusting clouds of shadowy dust. The shock wave from the explosion hurled Valerius's body into the air like a broken rag doll. The supreme elven general was thrown sixty feet backward. His body rolled across the black marble, smoke billowing from his scorched skin, before finally crashing into the iron pole where his older brother was chained.Arthur coughed violently, vomiting fresh blood mixed with black clots. He fell flat on his back on the palace stairs. His left

The executioner's sword swung down, slicing through the air with a deadly whistle. Kaelen shrieked in despair. A distance of one hundred and fifty feet was an absolutely impossible gap to close in less than a second. But the word impossible did not exist in Arthur's dictionary tonight. His physical capacity was sitting at ninety percent. His muscles felt like they were powered by a pure steam engine. Arthur did not waste time running closer. He kicked the chest of a shadow soldier trying to block his path with full force. The soldier was thrown back, and the steel spear in his hands flew into the air.Arthur caught the steel spear in midair. He pulled his right arm far back. The veins on his arm bulged out like old tree roots."Duck, Kaelen, wtf," Arthur roared thunderously.Arthur threw the spear like an insane Olympic athlete dropped into a battlefield. The steel spear shot forward, breaking the sound barrier. Its trajectory was perfectly straight, parting the crowd of shadow soldie

  • Chapter 33 Three Minutes to Death

Goliath roared until it spewed acid splatters from its three wolf mouths. Its voice created a shockwave that cracked the marble floor of the square. The thirteen-foot-tall monster did not wait for Arthur to approach. It charged forward on its four tiger legs, swinging the spiked chain in one of its right hands straight at Arthur's head."You have three minutes left, damn it," Arthur yelled while ducking to avoid the chain's slash. The wind from the chain blew his hair back hard."Spread out, wtf," Arthur commanded his group. "Aim for its legs and eyes. Do not let the acid from its mouths hit anyone, damn it."Kaelen darted to the left. The Elf prince no longer used a rifle, he went back to using his longsword. His eyes briefly glanced at his father on the stage, but he bit his lip and forced his focus onto the monster in front of him."Focus, Kaelen, wtf," Bramble snapped as he ran to the right. "If you die getting stepped on by this monster, your dad is going to get decapitated too,

  • Chapter 32 The Bloody Marble Stairs and the Chimera

Sylveria's warning sirens were still screaming, piercing their ears. Arthur led the group as they bolted from the ruined cargo station. Ahead of them stretched a massive, impossibly wide and steep white marble staircase. The stairs had thousands of steps, connecting the city's underground sector directly to the main palace courtyard at the top of the hill. They only had twenty-five minutes left before the executioner's sword severed the king's head."These stairs are so fucking long," Lyra complained, panting heavily. The girl ran in the middle of the formation, clutching her steam grenade belt tightly. "My thighs feel like they're going to snap, what the fuck. Why do elves love building things so high, damn it.""Shut your mouth and keep running," Kaelen shot back from the front. The elf prince was taking the steps two at a time. His eyes were locked straight ahead. "There used to be a magic elevator leading up to the palace, but my fucking uncle must have cut the power, shit."Bramb
