Gregory's fingers froze above the keyboard as his phone buzzed. His eyes flicked back to the laptop screen, and his breath caught in his throat.

A new message glowed on the messaging app. Robert Carnegie: "Send me your location. Meet me tonight at our usual spot. I need to see you."

Seconds passed. Then Alice's response appeared: "Okay."

Just like that. One word. A knife driven straight through his chest.

His hands clenched into fists, nails digging into his palms. The hotel address glowed on the screen, and when he checked the timestamp, his stomach twisted. One hour. They were meeting in one hour.

He grabbed his keys without thinking, his entire body shaking with a rage so intense it felt like his skin might split open from the inside. The drive to the hotel felt endless. Every second felt like a year, every traffic light felt personal. His jaw ached from clenching, and his grip on the steering wheel was so tight his knuckles had turned white.

He parked at the hotel entrance and waited, his eyes fixed on every car that pulled up. Then he saw it. The black Mercedes. And there she was.

Alice stepped out first, her champagne-colored dress catching the afternoon light. Robert emerged from the driver's side and immediately placed his hand on the small of her back, guiding her toward the entrance with a familiarity that made Gregory's blood boil. She didn't pull away. She leaned into him slightly, her face tilted up toward his as he spoke.

The intimacy of the gesture was unmistakable. This wasn't business. This wasn't a professional meeting.

Gregory forced himself to stay calm. His phone came up, and he started snapping photos. Click. Click. Click. His hands were steady even as his mind screamed. He captured them walking together, their bodies close enough to touch, their body language screaming guilt to anyone who cared to look.

Once they disappeared into the building, he sat for exactly thirty seconds, breathing deeply, trying to regain control of himself. Then he followed.

The lobby was all marble and soft lighting, elegant in a way that made him feel like an intruder in his own life. He slipped inside just as the elevator doors were closing on them. He caught a glimpse of Alice's face before they disappeared—she looked nervous, her fingers fidgeting with her purse strap.

But she still got on the elevator with him.

Gregory waited for the next one, and when the doors opened on the restaurant floor, he spotted them immediately. The hostess was leading them to a corner table draped in intimate shadows. Red wine sat in an ice bucket. Candles flickered on the tablecloth.

He chose a table directly behind them, angling his chair so he could see everything without appearing obvious. The waiter took his order without him really registering what he'd said.

Robert settled into his seat with the ease of someone who'd sat in this exact spot many times before. He reached across the table and took Alice's hand, his thumb brushing circles against her skin.

"Have you thought about my proposal?" Robert's voice was smooth, confident, the voice of a man used to getting what he wanted. His hair was perfectly styled, his suit expensive enough to make a statement. Everything about him screamed wealth and power.

Alice pulled her hand back gently, tucking it into her lap. A nervous laugh escaped her lips, and she looked away from him.

"I appreciate the offer, Robert , I really do. But I can't accept it," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the restaurant noise. Her shoulders tensed, her eyes avoiding his. "I still have feelings for Gregory."

Something inside Gregory's chest twisted at those words. She still had feelings for him. Even after her betrayal, even with this man sitting across from her offering her everything, she still said she had feelings for him.

But Robert wasn't deterred.

"Come on, Alice. You're thinking emotionally instead of logically," Robert leaned forward, his voice taking on a persuasive tone. "You're a successful businesswoman. You run a multimillion-dollar company. Look at you. Look at what you've accomplished. And then look at what you're married to. An ordinary programmer who makes what, half your annual salary? Someone your family probably looks down on?"

His words were sharp, designed to cut, designed to plant doubt. He reached across the table again and placed his hand over hers. This time, Alice didn't pull away immediately. She hesitated, her eyes fluttering closed for just a moment as if she were considering it.

That was when Gregory stood up.

The scrape of his chair against the floor drew attention. Alice's eyes snapped open, and her face went pale when she saw him standing there. Robert's expression shifted from confident to something more calculated as he took in Gregory's presence.

"You," Gregory's voice was ice as he stepped toward the table. He pointed at the flickering candles and the wine bottle nestled in ice. His jaw worked as he spoke, each word laced with barely controlled fury. "Red wine. Candlelight. Romantic little corner. I know this isn't your first time coming to places like this, is it?"

Alice stood up so quickly her chair nearly toppled backward. Her face flushed with guilt, and she reached for him.

"Gregory, I can explain. We're just discussing business. Robert's a client and we're talking about a potential partnership," she said quickly, her voice rising slightly. Her hands trembled as she gestured toward Robert , and her eyes darted back and forth between them like a trapped animal.

"Go home," Gregory's voice dropped to something dangerous, something that made the other diners uncomfortable enough to look away. He wasn't yelling. He wasn't making a scene. His calm fury was far more terrifying than anger ever could be.

Alice hesitated. Her mouth opened, closed, opened again. She wasn't moving.

Her feet were rooted to the spot as she stared at Gregory, her mind clearly racing through something. The fear in her eyes wasn't fear of him—it was fear of losing something. Something that had nothing to do with their marriage.

That hesitation was all it took.

Gregory's hands clenched at his sides. She didn't want to leave. She wanted to stay with Robert . She wanted to hear whatever proposal he was making, wanted to consider it seriously enough that she couldn't even bring herself to walk away immediately.

Robert stood up slowly, and when he spoke, his voice was filled with an oily charm that made Gregory's skin crawl.

"Now, now, Gregory. A gentleman doesn't force a lady anywhere. Alice is capable of making her own choices," Robert said smoothly, his smile never wavering. He straightened his tie with deliberate slowness. "Besides, it's clear that someone from your background might not understand the business world we operate in. Perhaps it's best if you let the adults talk."

The insult hung in the air between them like a blade.

Something snapped inside Gregory.

All the rage that had been building since he saw that message, all the fury from the hotel last night, all the pain from discovering his daughter might not be his daughter—it all exploded outward.

His foot came up, and his boot connected with Robert's chest, sending the man stumbling backward. Robert crashed into the table, and wine splashed across the white tablecloth like blood.

"Get in the car," Gregory said to Alice, his voice rough and commanding. He grabbed her wrist, not gently but not brutally either, and pulled her toward the elevator.

Alice didn't resist. She let him lead her away, her eyes wide with shock, her body shaking.

By the time they reached his car, her hands were trembling so badly she could barely hold on to anything. He forced her into the passenger seat, slammed the door, and drove away from the hotel at a speed that made her grip the dashboard.

Neither of them spoke during the entire drive home.

Gregory stared at Alice, his mind spiraling. The blood type report sat on the table like an accusation, but as he looked at his wife's face, doubt crept in like fog. Could the hospital have made a mistake? Was it possible that all of this was some kind of medical error? His hands felt weak.Alice's expression softened as she watched the certainty drain from his face. She slowly moved toward him, her movements gentle and deliberate. When she reached him, she wrapped her arms around his waist from behind and pressed her forehead against his back. Her touch was warm, tender, apologetic in a way words couldn't be."I'm sorry," she whispered against his shoulder blade, her voice small and vulnerable. "You're right. I made a mistake with Robert . I should have been more careful about how things looked. But I promise you, there was nothing romantic about it. Nothing."Her arms tightened around him slightly, and Gregory felt his anger beginning to dissolve like sugar in water. Maybe he had be

Her voice was sharp, cutting through the silence like glass. She took a step toward him, her eyes blazing. "Following me to a restaurant? Making a scene? Hitting Robert in front of all those people?"Gregory stood motionless in the entryway, his coat still on, his shoulders rigid. He stared at her with eyes so cold they looked like they belonged to a stranger. When he finally spoke, his voice was measured, controlled, which somehow made it more terrifying than if he'd yelled."You betrayed me, Alice."His words fell like stones into still water.
