1: A Day Unlucky

"Hey! You useless thing! You can't even hold a tray properly?!"

The harsh voice of a man appeared from behind as soon as a tray of meals that were meant to be served at a table in the restaurant had fallen and led the breakable plates to its ruin.

Matt Dawns, who had accidentally dropped this tray stood there staring at it in surprise as though this wasn't the tenth time this same sh*t had happened in this same month!

"You goddamn thing! Is your job here to shatter stuff or serve meals?! What on earth is your problem?!"

The senior waiter walked up to this man and stood before him with his eyes running from the broken plates on the floor and poured the meal, up to the man who was behind it.

All eyes were on them as murmurings ran through the atmosphere which had gone silent.

Matt Dawns had a bad feeling about this. Having dropped trays 10 times in a roll this month, he knew that it was not going to end in a simple scolding like the previous times!

"Well...sorry, I actually..it was a mistake..So..." Matt wanted to explain, his naive 22-year-old face scanning the ground to see if the reason behind his mistake was still there because he was certain that he had seen a scorpion crawling up his legs!

"Mistake? You call it an accident when you have done the same thing now for ten times in a row this month, and the month is still not even over!" The fierce male waiter standing before him snapped angrily.

"You..." The senior waiter finally stopped with both hands on his waist as he looked around the room, his head shaking, "I won't be dealing with you this time, so head up to the Manager's office NOW!"

Matt Dawns stiffened as he looked up at his senior waiter who had his hands pointing towards upstairs where the Manager's office was.

"Huh? No... Let's not go there...Please give me a second chance.." He desperately requested holding onto his senior waiter's hand.

But his senior waiter harshly brushed his hands off, "Get your stinky hands off me! Don't you feel ashamed of yourself in the slightest?! You're just too useless to get any work done!"

"I would have sent you to the manager a long time ago but I just keep forgetting and today has come to your peak so don't even think of beginning because it won't work!"

Matt Dawns blinked nervously. He could tell that there was nothing he could do now.

"Come on, go to the Manager's office and report yourself!" The harsh voice of the man snapped at him.

Matt Dawns should have expected the next action, who was he to even think that he could have a chat with that old and cranky Manager who certainly tolerated no mess?

Because the next minute after heading up to the Manager's office to do some explaining and pleading, he found himself standing outside the restaurant with the little pay of $200 monthly salary, clenched in his hands.

Matt Dawns sighed looking up to the sunny sky. He couldn't believe that he was once again sacked from a job he thought that he'd keep.

It was always like this for him, get a job, messes up, get hated, gets then get fired. He could say that non of his jobs ever last long. Two months were the highest he could remember working at a place. And it was at a convenience store where he was fired for sleeping on the job.

Matt scratched his head with a helpless expression on his face as he wondered what next to do. It wasn't certain that he was going to find another job any time sooner because most places he went to start by rejecting him.

It takes him at least ten rejections before finally getting a job. And now that he had been fired he guessed he'd have to begin that cycle.

Just as he stood there thinking of a possible solution to his current problem of being jobless once again, His phone rang.

Matt Dawns got the phone out of his pants and stared at the caller's ID which read “Mother-in-law”.

He didn't hesitate much before he picked up the line, "Hello? Mother-in-law!" He had put up a smile on his face to sound more cheerful and optimistic as he believed he should.

"Don't butter me up, you good for nothing. I'm not here to chat with you" She snapped in a hostile tone that Matt already found normal. "Go send my dear daughter her lunch at her workplace immediately. She's been busy and hasn't even had anything to eat since morning!”

Her tone didn't sound like one making a request but rather a command. She didn’t even mind asking if he was at work as she never cared the least.

"Oh.Sure.Sure" Matt agreed submissively.

"And don’t forget to bring the jewelry I told you about on your way home today. If you ever forget again..." She reminded me meaningfully.

"Oh... Okay, I certainly will ..." He assured as the woman cut the line before he even finished.

Matt sighed looking at his phone. He had a lot to tell about his current situation and position in life but it could be summarized in a certain way.

As long as Matt could remember, he had always been a pushover. Yeah, the typical type of nerdy-looking guy who always submitted to the orders of others and thereby let almost everyone whom he comes past trample on him and almost all his rights!

But he could do nothing, he guess it was his nature and he couldn't help but.

If he was to marvel at something in his life and feel proud about it, it was the fact of being engaged to an extremely beautiful lady and married into the Dawns family.

A family which is known as one of the wealthiest and most powerful families in the country
