Damien's brows furrowed slightly as he watched a figure alight from the car.

The figure was a lady, dressed in formal attire, her entire being radiated a cold aura as she took a slow steady steps towards Damien.

"Good morning," The lady, Maya greeted, stopping before Leon, sizing him up.

Her eyes held no hint of arrogance, neither did it hold any contempt, but the cold aura that surrounded her was enough to make everyone want to stay away from her.

"Are you Damien Ravencroft?" The lady continued, her gaze meeting that of Damien.

"Yes I'm Damien," Damien answered, nodding slightly, a gentle smile tugged hr corner of his lips.

"I'm Maya," Maya spoke, her voice, void of warmth or coldness.

"My grandfather did ask me to pick you up," She added, maintaining her emotionless tone.

"Yes..."

Maya frowned lightly at this wondering who Damien was and why her grandfather had said she should come pick him up.

"He also said something I don't think I would be agreeing with," Maya looked up, pushing the thoughts to the back of her mind.

"And what's that?" Damien raised his brows, wondering what his godfather has told her.

"He said you'd be my new bodyguard," Maya answered flatly, looking away.

At the same time, a slight contempt flashed in her eyes.

She has gone through Damien's files after all.

Five years ago, he was just still a nobody who was hit with a series of misfortunes.

Then he was sent to prison. Though she did feel for him as she knew he had faced quite a lot of injustice. But that didn't make him qualified to be able to protect her.

With his skinny figure, she was confident he wouldn't be able to last even a day.

Besides, she didn't want to put an innocent person into danger. What he has gone through five years ago was enough, it was better if he stayed out of it.

"And what's with it," Damien spoke, pulling Maya out of her thoughts.

"Do you have anything against it?"

"Yes," Maya nodded, her voice sounding rather disinterested,

"And what's that?" Damien inquired, feeling quite interested in knowing more about this lady that stood before him.

"I don't need anyone to protect me," Maya spread out her hands stating a matter of fact.

"Really?" Damien raised his brows, feeling a bit amused with Maya's confidence.

"Do you look down on me?" Maya's expression darkened watching the smile on Damien's lips.

For a brief moment, she hesitated. Something about him felt wrong. Not dangerous exactly, but unsettling in a way she couldn’t explain..

"That's not the case, do not misunderstand me," Damien chuckled, shaking his head,

"It's just that it's your grandfather who arranged this, so I don't think it's right to dissolve it just like that_"

"You don't need to worry about me," Maya interrupted Damien, a glint flashing in her eyes.

"I don't need anyone to protect me, I can protect myself," She concluded, her voice laced with confidence.

"I see," Damien mouthed, observing Maya.

From the way she stood, talked and walked, he could tell she was a Martial arts master.

And from the looks of it, her level was not low.

But then, she knew not what she was facing. According to what his Godfather had said, the family was in a crisis and he couldn't help.

Also, their opponents were way stronger. Not to add that some of them were cultivators.

"You don't have to worry about not having a job," Maya's voice came, pulling Damien out of his thoughts.

"You can come back with me and work at the company," She carried on, her voice softening a bit as she thought about the troubles Damien had gone through in the past few years.

"With your major skills, I'm sure you'll integrate back into the society in no time,"

"Also, I'll pay you three times the normal salary."

"Your daily necessities would also be taken care of until you're able to settle down on your own."

Damien glanced at Maya wondering how this lady had come to this conclusion,

Well, she had some conscience. She did look down on him and think he was weak, but at the same time, she didn't forget about this situation and even offered him a job.

That was generous. Also, with that, he would be close enough to her to protect her if something really happened.

"Sure," Damien agreed,

"Good," Maya breathed in a sigh of relief,

She was afraid Damien would insist. And since it was her grandfather who had arranged it, she might be forced to keep him around.

But it seemed like he knew his worth and was not willing to cling around.

Also, she was sure her grandfather would have expected this.

Meaning, he wasn't intending for him to stay by her side, rather she wanted her to find him a job.

But if that was the case, then why had he said he wanted him to protect her.

"We should head back," Maya sighed, pushing the thoughts to the back of her mind.

"I'll take you to get some make over first, also you'll need some rest, so we should get going," Maya continued, turning around, walking towards the car.

Damien nodded, following behind with his hands in his pocket taken aback by Maya's kindness.

He had thought she would be snobbish and rude, but seemed like he was wrong.

His Godfather sure had a good granddaughter. She would be easier to protect this way.

"Get in," Maya said, unlocking the car, signalling to Damien.

Damien opened the door and was about to get in when rows of cars suddenly pulled up from the distance.

Seeing this, Maya and Damien's expression changed slightly as they watched the car pull up right before Damien.

Bodyguards dressed in black hurried out of the other cars and quickly rushed to open the doors of one of the cars.

Opening the door, two figures alighted slowly.

"Did you enjoy your time in there?" A mocking laughter erupted the moment the figures stepped out of the car, at the same time, murderous aura shot out from Damien, his eyes instantly becoming bloodshot.

“A trick?” Moses gasped in shock for a brief moment before asking.“Sure. I want to see the trick you want to put on!” He replied, frowning deeply. His words might have come out sarcastically, but it didn’t matter to Damien.“I need two lab rats!” Damien lifted two fingers in the air as he spoke. Moses wanted to see where it would lead to after all. He turned and left the ward for a brief moment to ask his men to bring them over.Maya stared at Damien, but this time she didn’t have an expectant look on her face; instead, she was filled with so much doubt. • A magic trick

Everyone stared at Damien, puzzled. Apparently, he sounded like someone who had lost his sense of reasoning or perhaps he had bumped his head off somewhere and could no longer think properly with his brain. At least if his brain was that useless, his eyes should be able to see that the patient who was lying in the bed was no longer breathing and had become so pale that even at a first glance, one would be able to tell he was dead. But in Damien's case, that didn’t seem to be it. Unless, he was trying to add more salt to the wound, deliberately. Moses began to fume in rage. His chest was heaving as though he was being pumped with so much anger and hatred and would soon unleash it upon Damien ruthlessly.“Damien, I don’t know what you are trying to prove, but you should just stay put and keep shut!”Aria immediately pulled Damien forcefully to the back. She had a feeling that he would bring nothing but trouble the moment she saw him; that was why she had been looking at him like he was

“What?”Maya gasped in shock, almost losing her balance on the floor. Her eyes widened after her face became so ashen. She was trying hard not to believe what she just heard. Not just her but Aria too. Both of them looked back at the bed and without going to confirm, they were sure the man was dead. Even the doctors who stood by the side had gloomy faces as they weren't able to save him.Damien who just walked in, noticed all this, the tension in the air; however, he was perplexed as to how it was affiliated with Maya.“You aren't saying anything yet? Have you not made your decision already?” The man, Moses continued. His eyes were piercing daggers at her as he emitted killing intent. If he could swap Maya's life to bring his son back, he would have done it a long time ago. Both Maya and Aria trembled upon hearing his words again. Maya inhaled deeply, deciding to be calm about it. “I can't choose!” She said.“Hahahaha, what a nice joke.” Moses burst out chuckling. “I knew you were g

Moments later, Damien arrived back at Moonlight Corporation. As he stood by the entrance, he thought about calling Maya to give him directions to her office, or if she could come down or send someone to come pick him up.Just as the thought crossed his mind, he heard a familiar voice from up ahead. “We need to hurry!” He looked and saw it was Maya walking alongside someone else— a woman clad in a suit, both of them had a tough yet panicked expression still as they hurried off. Regardless, he approached them.“Damien, you are back?” Maya caught a glance of him as they were about to take a turn into the parking lot.She managed to squeeze out a smile as she looked at him while her assistant, Aria seized him up, wondering who he was.“Yes, I'm back. It immediately gave off the impression that he was suspicious of what she said.Seeing this, Freya shuddered and explained further.“I’m not lying to you. I swear. I felt terrible for what I did, but it’s not like I can go against such a powerful family. I’m just like a small fry to them.”She paused to catch her breath before continuing.“I spent days unable to eat, knowing I’ve wronged an innocent man and put him in jail. Please forgive me.”“You don’t look like someone who has been hunted by her conscience!” Damien huffed coldly, still unmoved by her words.Freya was on the verge of saying something when his words caught her off guard.
