Celestia hovered there a moment, high enough that the moon’s glow outlined her armored form. Then she drew a deep breath and swept her arm out in an elegant arc. “Dragon’s Veil: Moonshadow Storm,” she intoned softly.

A swirling barrier of shadowy energy unfurled around her – an ethereal vortex of midnight hues dancing like liquid obsidian.

“Loose arrows! Bring her down!” cried a panicked sergeant from the wall. A swarm of arrows and bolts soared upward at Celestia, desperate attempts to strike her from the sky.

Celestia’s lips curved ever so slightly. The storm of darkness around her pulsed outward. In an instant, every arrow that hurtled into the dark aura was hurled back as if caught in a gale and reversed. Agonized screams rang out as dozens of Avelline’s own

Moments later, a battered iron grate was pried open on the edge of the courtyard – a stairwell leading up from Malric’s dungeons. Tyriel emerged first, soot-stained and anxious, supporting a pale but smiling Aetherlyn. Selena and several soldiers followed behind, helping a line of gaunt prisoners climb up into the cool morning air. Elven faces, human faces – the victims of Malric’s cruelty – blinked at the dawn sky as if seeing it for the first time in ages.Near the front of the freed captives, Aetherlyn nearly buckled as the fresh breeze hit her face, but Tyriel caught her and gently eased her to sit on a fallen stone column. “Aetherlyn… we’re here,” he whispered, voice choked with emotion. The elven bard was filthy and shivering, silver hair matted and cheeks sunken, yet to Tyriel she had never looked more beautiful.

    CHAPTER 159: Blood and Ashes

By the time dawn’s first light crept over Avelline City, Duke Malric’s reign of terror had definitively ended. Under heavy guard, Malric was dragged from his hiding place and forced to his knees in the courtyard of his own half-ruined manor. The once-proud Duke was barely recognizable now – his fine velvet doublet torn and soot-stained, one eye swollen shut, his powdered wig lost in the scramble to capture him. Two Carosso knights hauled him forward and kept him bowed on the blood-spattered marble.Emperor Ethan approached with measured steps, his black armor glinting with the red hues of sunrise filtering through the collapsed roof. Celestia strode just behind him, expression as pitiless as an avenging angel’s. Lucianna and the other companions gathered around – exhausted, bloodied, but resolute – to witness judgment.Malric lifted his head, trembling. Gone wa

  • CHAPTER 158: Fallen and Deliverance

With Avelline’s mighty gate reduced to charred rubble, the Dragon Emperor’s forces poured through the breach like floodwaters through a broken dam. Ethan himself led the vanguard, sword raised high as legions of Carosso soldiers surged into the city streets behind him. The frigid night air filled with battle cries and the clash of steel on steel as the final confrontation began in earnest.Disoriented and demoralized by the gate’s sudden destruction, Avelline’s remaining defenders attempted to make a stand in the narrow avenues just inside the walls. They formed desperate shield-lines between overturned wagons and toppled market stalls, determined to fight for every cobblestone. For a brief moment, their courage held, and sword met sword in a cacophony of sparks and shouts. Then Celestia descended among them.

  • CHAPTER 156: Siege (1)

Midnight cloaked the plains outside Avelline City, but the darkness was shattered by the glow of thousands of torches and campfires. Carosso’s army had arrived in force – a vast sea of steel encircling the city walls. The crisp winter air thrummed with the low murmur of soldiers and the distant rumble of siege engines being wheeled into place. Overhead, the stars glittered like cold watchful eyes, as if anticipating the carnage to come.On Avelline’s ancient ramparts, General Cassaran gripped the stone battlements, his knuckles white. His breath misted before him in ragged plumes. Beyond the walls, Ethan’s host stretched to the horizon. Banners emblazoned with a golden dragon on a crimson field whipped in the frigid breeze. He could make out massed elite formations bristling in the torchlight. The sight was enough to chill even

  • CHAPTER 155: A Plea

The journey to Carosso was long and weary, but under Eric and Selena’s vigilant escort, Lucianna and Tyriel finally reached the Dragon Emperor’s capital city. As they passed beneath Carosso’s towering gates – guarded by ranks of proud soldiers – the two elves could not help but marvel. The city beyond was vibrant and orderly; banners bearing Ethan’s golden dragon emblem fluttered from every spire. Even at midnight, the streets bustled with life under warm lamplight. After the menace and mistrust of Avelline, Carosso felt like an oasis of safety.Yet neither Lucianna nor Tyriel had come to admire the scenery. Their hearts remained heavy with their mission and with the loss of Aetherlyn. They rode directly to the imperial palace, an imposing citadel of white stone and blue glass crowning the city’s center.Inside the gran
