"The High Council... they didn't wait for your report," Alric Phan choked out, his body trembling violently as he collapsed onto the wet basalt. "They've initiated the purge. They aren't just pushing the border, Lord Zafriel... they've ordered a complete, scorched-earth cleansing of the entire southern region. They're burning everything. Humans, demons, villages... they're going to wipe us all out."

The heavy, humid air of the cavern grew instantly freezing. The lingering heat of their interrupted kiss evaporated, replaced by a sharp, suffocating dread.

Zafriel dropped to his knees beside the dying scout, his hands flaring with a warm, golden light as he pressed them against Alric’s bleeding side. "Alric, breathe. Hang on. Who authorized this? The Grand Inquisitor?"

"Daryen Surin..." Alric gasped, his eyes rolling back as the light magic stabilized his shallow breathing. "He brought the decree. They said you... they said you were taking too long. That you might have been compromised."

Zafriel’s face went pale, his jaw tightening so hard the muscle leaped. He shot a look at Adrian. The raw, desperate passion that had just consumed them moments before was gone, replaced by a cold, agonizing reality.

"I have to go back," Zafriel said, his voice shaking but resolute. He stood up, abandoning his ruined light-armor pieces, leaving him in just the damp, white sleeveless tunic that clung to his chest. "If Surin is leading the vanguard, there won't be anything left of the southern border. He's a zealot. He doesn't care about collateral damage."

Adrian stepped closer, his massive, dark frame casting a heavy shadow over the kneeling champion. The urge to grab Zafriel, to pull him back into the shadows of the cave and keep him safe from the meat grinder of the outside world, was a physical ache in his chest. His demonic instincts screamed at him to lock the light champion away, to claim him and protect him from his own people.

"You go back there, and they'll lock you up, Zafriel," Adrian said, his voice a low, gravelly rumble that vibrated through the stone. "Or worse. If they think you're compromised, you're walking straight into a trap."

"I don't have a choice," Zafriel said, stepping up to Adrian. The height difference was immense, but Zafriel didn't flinch. He reached out, his hand resting flush against Adrian’s broad, rough chest, right over his beating heart. "Those are my people. And the villagers at the border... they're innocent. I can't just let Surin slaughter them to prove a point."

Adrian gripped Zafriel’s hand, his sharp, obsidian claws scraping lightly against the champion's pale skin. The contrast of their bodies—cold, dark shadow and warm, radiant light—sent a bitter, aching shiver through him. He leaned down, his forehead pressing against Zafriel’s for a fleeting, desperate second, inhaling the sweet, clean scent of him one last time.

"Then don't die," Adrian rumbled, his voice thick with a raw, fierce emotion. "Because if you do, I'll burn the rest of this world to ash."

Zafriel gave a small, breathless laugh, his fingers tightening around Adrian’s before he pulled away. "I'll hold you to that. See you on the field, Demon Lord."

The southern border was a hellscape by the time Adrian arrived.

The sky was choked with thick, black smoke that smelled of burning flesh, sulfur, and pine. The Light Alliance’s war machines—massive, gold-plated trebuchets powered by solar crystals—were raining down pillars of purified light upon the demonic outposts. The defensive trenches were already yielding, clogged with mud, ash, and the bodies of the fallen.

Kaelan Rith stood at Adrian’s side on the basalt ramparts, his blade dripping with silver blood. "Sire, they're breaking through the secondary lines. The soldiers are panicking. Without your magic, we can't hold the gate much longer. Do we initiate the void-purge?"

Adrian looked across the burning valley. He could see the Light Alliance’s standard—a golden sunburst—rearing up amidst the chaos. And at the front of their vanguard, cutting through the demon lines with fluid, devastating grace, was Zafriel.

Every swing of Zafriel's twin shortswords sent waves of brilliant light crashing through the dark hordes. But Adrian, watching through his enhanced demonic vision, saw what the others didn't. Zafriel wasn't aiming for lethal strikes. He was disarming, knocking back, and neutralizing. He was trying to spare them.

He’s trying to keep his promise, Adrian thought, his heart twisting.

"No void-purge," Adrian ordered, his voice echoing over the din of battle. "Keep the defensive line tight, but do not execute a counter-offensive. We hold the gates. No unnecessary slaughter."

Kaelan stared at him, bewildered. "Sire? They are burning our homes! If we don't unleash the void-spells—"

"I said, hold!" Adrian roared, the sheer, crushing weight of his Monarch authority forcing Kaelan to drop to his knees. "I will handle the vanguard."

Adrian leapt from the high ramparts, his massive body crashing into the muddy, blood-slicked earth below. The impact sent a shockwave of dust outward, drawing the attention of the surrounding light soldiers.

Adrian moved like a battering ram. He didn't use spells—his mana was still dangerously low—but the raw, physical power of his monstrous body was more than enough. He slammed his fist into the ground, shattering the earth to throw charging knights off balance. He slapped aside light-infused spears with his bare hands, shattered heavy shields with the back of his arm, and sent soldiers flying with kinetic sweeps. He deliberately kept his claws blunt, striking to disable rather than dismember. He was tearing through an army, but he was doing it to save them from themselves.

"Adrian!"

The voice cut through the clamor of clashing steel.

Adrian turned to see Zafriel standing atop a mound of shattered basalt. His twin blades were blazing with a furious, blinding white light, but his blue eyes were filled with a desperate, pleading agony.

"Get out of here!" Zafriel yelled, leaping down to meet him.

Their weapons clashed. Or rather, Zafriel's glowing blades slammed against Adrian’s thick, armored forearms. The impact sent a shower of golden sparks and dark mist exploding into the air, the physical shock of their proximity making both of them gasp.

They locked blades, their bodies pressing close in the middle of the raging battlefield. The heat radiating from Zafriel’s light magic burned against Adrian’s cold skin, but it was an agony Adrian craved.

"You're holding back," Adrian grunted, pushing against Zafriel's blades, his face inches from the champion’s. "Make it look real, Zafriel. They're watching."

Out of the corner of his eye, Adrian spotted a contingent of heavily armored high-paladins, led by a man with cold, fanatical eyes—Daryen Surin, the Grand Inquisitor. They were closing in, their eyes locked on the duel.

"I can't," Zafriel whispered, his breath hot against Adrian's face, his arms trembling as he held the clash. "I can't strike you. Not after... not after the cave."

"You have to," Adrian pleaded, his demonic voice cracking with a very human desperation. "If you don't, they'll kill you for treason. Strike me!"

"Let them," Zafriel said, a wild, reckless grin breaking through his exhaustion.

With a sudden, deliberate movement, Zafriel lowered his right blade, leaving his entire left side completely exposed. It was a clear invitation for Adrian to strike—or for the battle to end. Zafriel simply stopped fighting, his twin swords dying down to a faint glimmer as he stood there, completely open, his eyes locked onto Adrian’s glowing red ones with an absolute, unwavering devotion.

Adrian’s heart stopped. In his peripheral vision, a sharp, golden text window flared into existence, burning with system-level authority:

Execute the Enemy Champion. Progress the Narrative.*

"No," Adrian muttered.

If he didn't end this now, the inquisitors would see Zafriel's hesitation as outright betrayal. To save Zafriel's life, Adrian had to make it look like the champion had fought to his absolute limit and failed.

With a heavy, dramatic grunt, Adrian threw his arms up, letting Zafriel’s remaining blade graze his shoulder armor in a brilliant shower of sparks. Adrian stumbled back, letting out a roar of simulated pain, and swept his arm to conjure a massive, harmless wall of black dust and kinetic wind between them. The blast was loud, theatrical, and completely harmless, but it threw Zafriel backward into the mud.

"Fall back!" Adrian bellowed to his forces, his voice carrying over the wind as he grabbed Kaelan Rith by the shoulder. "The gate is compromised! We retreat to the inner ring!"

The demon army, confused but obeying their lord, began a synchronized, hasty retreat into the smoky canyons, pulling back from the southern gate.

As the dust cleared, Adrian looked back through the haze of smoke.

Zafriel was standing in the center of the muddy battlefield, his swords lowered, his chest heaving under his ruined tunic. He hadn't pursued. He had just stood there, watching the dark king retreat into the shadows.

But the trap had already closed.

Before Zafriel could even turn around, four high-paladins slammed their heavy, magic-suppressing shields into his back. Zafriel collapsed to his knees, his twin blades clattering to the bloody dirt.

Daryen Surin stepped forward, his cold, self-righteous voice carrying over the howling wind. "Zafriel Anurak. You had the beast cornered. You lowered your weapon."

"He was retreating," Zafriel protested, his voice rough as the paladins forced his arms behind his back, securing him with heavy, glowing iron shackles that hissed against his skin. "I was conserving my mana—"

"Save your lies for the tribunal," Surin spat, striking Zafriel across the face with a gauntleted hand. "Arrest him. The champion is a traitor."

Through the swirling smoke and falling ash, Zafriel raised his head. His lip was bleeding, his silver hair wild and dirty, but his piercing blue eyes locked onto Adrian’s distant, shadow-wrapped figure. There was no fear in his gaze—only a desperate, burning longing that reached across the bloody battlefield, anchoring itself deep in Adrian’s cold, monstrous heart as they dragged him away.

But his arms never loosened. He kept them locked around Zafriel, holding the champion’s battered, heat-radiating body securely against his chest."Hey," Adrian rasped, his voice a low, gravelly vibration in the quiet of the ravine. "You still with me?"Zafriel let out a weak, shaky breath against Adrian’s collarbone. His fingers, pale and trembling, twitched against Adrian's broad shoulder. "Yeah. Barely. Feels like my veins are full of lead.""That's the magic-suppressing iron," Adrian muttered, shifting his grip to slide one massive arm under Zafriel's knees and the other behind his back. Zafriel asked, his brow furrowing as he looked from the empty air back to Adrian. "The air felt... glitched.
